A legal brawl has broken out between mogul Alexander Shustorovich and Img Talent, whose affiliate WME faces the prospect of losing a portion of its music roster as part of a forced sale of the premier classical music management firm Img Artists.
A company owned by the Russia-born U.S. citizen has filed a lawsuit looking to enforce an arbitration ruling that holds that Img Talent must sell its stake in Img Artists to Shustorovich. The deal includes a noncompete that would allegedly bar Endeavor-owned WME from business related to classical, jazz or world music and festivals for three years. Img Talent, also owned by Endeavor, has refused to sign the 2021 purchase agreement.
In arbitration decided last year, it was found that the noncompete is “unquestionably a term or condition” of the deal and “must be complied with” by Img Talent and its affiliates.

The Kennedy Center has found the honorees for the 47th installment of The Kennedy Center Honors.
Director Francis Ford Coppola; rock band The Grateful Dead; singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt; and jazz composer, trumpeter and pianist Arturo Sandoval will be feted at this year’s event, with The Apollo Theater in Harlem set to receive special honors “as an iconic American institution.”
The President of the United States typically serves as the host of the event at the John F. Last year’s honorees for the 46th installment of the event included Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick, Barry Gibb and Renée Fleming. Previous honorees have included George Clooney, U2, Lorne Michaels and many others.
The Kennedy Center Honors will be handed out Dec. 8, and will be broadcast on CBS on Dec.

Chicago – When the word “Opera” is defined today, the person that would illustrate the word is Renée Fleming. The lyric soprano has done most major female opera roles, and has written a new book … “Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness” … and recently appeared at the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Renée Fleming has performed coloratura, lyric, and lighter spinto soprano operatic roles in Italian, German, French, Czech, and Russian, aside from her native English. A significant portion of her career has been the performance of new music, including world premieres of operas, concert pieces, and songs composed for her by André Previn, Caroline Shaw, Kevin Puts, Anders Hillborg, Nico Muhly, Henri Dutilleux, Brad Mehldau, and Wayne Shorter.

There’s a reason the word honors is in the title. To help celebrate the lifetime contributions of artists in music, dance, theater, opera, movies and TV, the Kennedy Center Honors routinely pay tribute to its recipients by rewarding them with memorable performances.
Scores of artists have been feted since the Honors got their start in 1978, but there are certain tributes that remain sketched in our hearts forever. In anticipation of the 46th annual event honoring Billy Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, and Dionne Warwick on Dec. 27, we look back at some of the show’s most unforgettable performances — starting with Lenny Bernstein’s opening speech from the very first Kennedy Center Honors, of course.

Washington — The Kennedy Center Honors was a decidedly tuneful affair, with musical talents representing four of its five recipients – vocalists and/or songwriters Dionne Warwick, Renée Fleming, Queen Latifah and Barry Gibb — along with actor/comedian/filmmaker Billy Crystal.
The program, in its 46th year, followed the traditional format that showcases tributes to each honoree by artists and celebs whose identities are undisclosed in advance. It kicked off with a lively parade of dancers down the aisles, led by emcee and former honoree Gloria Estefan and accompanied by Sheila E on drums — a first for the event. Produced again by Done and Dusted Inc., it will air Dec. 27 on CBS.
Omitted this year was one familiar staple at the event – the inclusion of brief video biographies of each honoree that emphasized their childhoods and routes to success. Instead, minimal use of videos embellished career highlights.

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.

10 November 2023 — Today, Lise Davidsen, the most in-demand soprano in the world right now, releases her new album, ‘Christmas From Norway’ via Decca Classics/Universal Music Canada. Hailed as “The living, breathing meteor of the current opera world.” (The I Paper), Lise Davidsen‘s forthcoming album presents a delightful and personally selected collection of traditional Norwegian Christmas music and classic festive favourites, spreading the warm glow of the Scandinavian Christmas spirit. Reflecting on the project, Lise expresses her long-standing desire to create this album. “For Scandinavians, Christmas serves as a beacon of light in the midst of a lengthy winter. Perhaps that is why we embrace it so wholeheartedly.” says Lise.
The ‘Norwegian Starlight’ (quote) is unstoppable: this season alone Lise has starred in the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, where she ‘swept all before her’ (The i Paper), alongside cellist and label-mate Sheku Kanneh-Mason, during an event she...

Duck Dynasty and the Metropolitan Opera are two very different cultural phenomena, but they have at least one thing in common: Fathom Events, the unique and prolific theatrical distributor based in Denver.
Over the past 20 years, Fathom has mastered the art of finding audiences for one-off cinematic events, from live broadcasts of opera, stage plays and live concert pics to anniversary rereleases of classic Hollywood films. A groundbreaking partnership with The Metropolitan Opera put Fathom on the map. Launched in 2006, The Met: Live in HD program, which sees about 10 operas a year beamed into theaters on Saturdays and Wednesdays, has generated more than $205 million in box office sales and consistently lands on a weekend’s top 10 list.
The company has also made a big impression in the faith-based and anime spaces (again, two disparate genres). Fathom ranked No. 9 on the list of top distributors at the 2022 domestic box office, with...

Concord is reaching into its huge library of music recordings for a first-of-its-kind initiative with Outfest to support up-and-coming Lgbtqia+ filmmakers of color.
Over the weekend, the festival premiered three short films selected for the initiative — each of them making creative use of a song from the Concord IP holdings, which include more than a million recordings and music compositions.
Skate, a short written and directed by Zoë Hodge that’s set in a roller skating rink, incorporated Sylvester’s disco anthem “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” Avivar, a drama that revolves around the patriarch of a Latino family and his queer son, drew inspiration from “Tres Días de Carnaval” by Latin music icons Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco. Miles Lopez directed, while Jonathan De La Torre wrote and stars in the film.

We’ve had some bad weekends at the box office this year, but few worse than a weekend when the only new movie opens in fourth place and the #1 movie from a previous weekend loses so much business it drops all the way down to third. Read on for the weekend box office report.
That new movie was the R-Rated comedy “No Hard Feelings,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and we’ll get to that in a bit, but first, we have to look at the movie that topped the box office. That was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” which made $19.3 million this weekend, down just 29% from last weekend, returning it to first place after weeks in second and third place. After crossing the $300 million mark on Friday, the animated sequel has grossed $317 million domestically. Overseas, “Spider-Verse” added another $22 million this weekend, bringing its global total to $560.3 million.

Angela Morley becomes the first openly trans person to earn an Academy Award nomination
The first trans person to be nominated for an Oscar contended for music. The great Angela Morley achieved this in 1974 as one of the four composers for the film “The Little Prince.” Morley’s nomination was a huge step forward in LGBTQ+ history, and it’s rare even to this day, with the number of trans individuals nominated for the Oscar still being very small.

Bee Gees legend Barry Gibb and opera star Renée Fleming will also be recognized at the 46th annual event, set for December at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Dionne Warwick, Billy Crystal, Queen Latifah, Barry Gibb and Renée Fleming have been set as the five arts figures due to be celebrated at the 46th annual Kennedy Center Honors, with a ceremony taking place Dec. 3 in Washington, D.C.
The ceremony will take place Dec. 3 and be filmed for later broadcast airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
Four of the five honorees hail from the world of music, although Queen Latifah has shifted her focus toward acting in recent years. The ratio is not an uncommon one for the Kennedy Center Honors: Last year’s ceremony honored U2, Amy Grant, Tania León and Gladys Knight, leaving George Clooney the odd acting man out.
No date was announced for the broadcast, but the 2022 ceremony also took place in the first week of December and was broadcast during the last week of that month. The show will be produced by...

"Someone will die at the end of the day." A fictionalized Virginia Woolf (Joyce Didonato) announces this as she sullenly stares at a dead bird. She's referring to the plot development of her 1925 novel, "Mrs. Dalloway," and she hasn't decided who will die yet in her novel, which would be considered a modernist masterpiece long after her 1941 suicide. She's also echoing her own suicidal dread. She also doesn't know that she's portending another woman's ending.
Based on Michael Cunningham's novel and the 2002 Paramount Pictures film adaptation directed by Stephen Daldry, "The Hours" opera premiere on the Metropolitan Stage is an ambitious undertaking. It may be hard for devoted cinephiles to imagine anyone other than Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore as the three leads in “The Hours,” but trust that The Metropolitan Opera found their counterparts in the classical world. Michael Cunningham’s 1998 novel gets a third life, fitting for its tripartite story structure, in the Met’s poetic adaptation of the poignant story of three women living the same day across decades. Renée Fleming, Kelli O’Hara, and Joyce Didonato lead The Met’s gorgeous new production, gathering three of the singing world’s most revered divas onto one stage for a rare collaboration.
This alone is reason enough to see it, which audiences can on December 10 thanks to The Met Live in HD. For film lovers unsure about opera, let the reasonably priced ticket be a gateway to new experiences. Phelm McDermott’s creatively staged production and Tom Pye’s...

Cities That Sing: Paris highlights the City of Lights with a special musical twist.
Grammy Award-winning opera singer Renée Fleming recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss how the project showcases opera to a wider audience.
“The Met HD broadcasts have been really helpful in the last decade,” Fleming said, before adding, “IMAX takes it to another level. IMAX, with Stage Access, has done a type of filming that is so larger than life in terms of the cameras that were used and the camera work. This is an art form, of course, that combines all of the arts. To be able to sit and see that huge screen for opera is so perfect, and this amazing sound system also enhances how we sound. I think it’s a perfect marriage.”
Fleming also revealed one of her favorite moments that occured while filming.
