Journalist and author who won two Pulitzer Prizes for medical stories at the Baltimore Evening Sun.
He dropped out of high school and joined the Navy, where he was assigned to the All Hands magazine. After leaving the service, he attended the University of Maryland on the GI Bill and earned a degree in journalism.
He taught at Towson State University, the University of Maryland, Oregon State University and the University of Oregon.
