Industry heavyweights Atticus Ross (“Shogun”), Michael Minkler (“Masters of the Air”) and Robert Elswit (“Ripley”) were among those who led the Creative Art Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
FX’s “Shogun” dominated the Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, landing 25 nods. The drama series based on James Clavell’s epic novel landed musician and composer Ross a nomination for music composition for a series while costume designer Carlos Rosario was also nominated.
Speaking with Variety, Rosario explained how he created over 2300 designs for the series set in feudal Japan.
Elswit, who reunited with directed Steven Zaillian for Netflix’s “Ripley,” earned his first Primetime Emmy nod. The Oscar winning Dp (“There Will Be Blood”) sat down for Variety’s Inside the Frame series and explained how he wanted to get inside Tom Ripley’s (Andrew Scott) mind and give the series a painterly effect.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Fallout” is set within the post-apocalyptic universe of one of the most beloved video game series of all time, something that gave its filmmakers a rich world they could build on, deepen, and expand. When production designer Howard Cummings came on board, the first thing he did was immerse himself in the game and its various environments. “I really got to research it like I was doing a period film,” Cummings told IndieWire, noting that there was a vast network of fans whose YouTube videos he could draw from to collect reference material. Those videos not only provided information, they made Cummings fully aware of how much scrutiny his work would be subject to from the video game’s devoted followers. “I realized, ‘Wow, if I do this, every single thing I do will be analyzed.'”

This post contains spoilers for "Fallout" season 1.
In its first season, Prime Video's adaptation of the hugely popular video game series "Fallout" follows several heroes and villains who are still working to understand what's real in their worlds. Walton Goggins' movie star character, Cooper Howard, slowly comes to realize that America is making up an apocalypse to sell back to itself, while Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus quickly learns that the powerful men he idolized as a kid aren't all they're cracked up to be. It's Ella Purnell's Vault-dweller Lucy, though, who gets the biggest reality check when she leaves her underground dwelling to explore a ruthless world with no place for the chipper sense of entitlement she was taught to convey.
Given the themes of the series, it's fitting that it's just as hard to tell what's real and what's not behind-the-scenes of "Fallout" as it is in front of the camera.

Continuing the trend of bringing video games to life, Prime Video recently released the live-action adaptation of one of the most popular video games out there – Fallout. Upon its release, the namesake television series was welcomed with critical acclaim and flaunts a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Actor Walton Goggins was given the responsibility of portraying The Ghoul and boy did he do a fantastic job!

However, transforming into a post-human being was not an easy task. It took hours out of Walton Goggins’ day for him to perfectly put on the prosthetics and makeup needed to look like the video game character. In a behind-the-scenes video shared online, you can see the tiresome process taking place right in front of your eyes.

Among the many races in post-apocalyptic video game series Fallout is the Ghoul, posthumans severely mutated by prolonged exposure to radiation, which greatly extends their lifespans but gives them a zombie-like appearance. In the upcoming Prime Video “Fallout” series, Walton Goggins is almost unrecognizable as The Ghoul.
Bloody Disgusting caught up with Walton Goggins and executive producers, writers and co-showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner at the SXSW “Fallout” activation this week, where the trio revealed that The Ghoul was written specifically for Goggins. They also discussed what to expect from the series in terms of tone.
A character like The Ghoul requires extensive work in the makeup chair, as you might imagine, with the team transforming Walton Goggins into a noseless, zombielike cowboy in the wasteland. The type of transformation that surely informed his performance, right?

Discussions for the makeup in “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” “started as early as when we were working on ‘Django Unchained’ doing the age makeup on [Samuel L. Jackson] … We started to have some discussions about aging him even more. He didn’t tell me what the project name was at that time,” remembers “Ptolemy” makeup designer Jake Garber about prepping to turn Jackson into a man in his 90s suffering from dementia for the Apple TV+ limited series, which had been Jackson’s passion project for years. Samuel L. Jackson‘s ubiquitous on-screen presence is due in large part to his 140-plus movie and TV roles and his uncanny ability to be both a credit card spokesman and Marvel’s Nick Fury.
Jackson is also a consummate actor who loves losing himself in roles with the help of hair and makeup. For years, he relied on award-winning wig guru Robert Louis Stevenson for everything from his moist Jheri curl in Pulp Fiction to his rope-like dreds in The Caveman’s Valentine.

Nick Fury, former S.H.I.E.L.D. and certified badass, is a true veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – hell, he was the one to assemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the first place, even giving them a gentle (albeit deceitful) nudge in the right direction during the finale of The Avengers.
But as we stand on the precipice of Infinity War, the question on everyone’s lips can be surmised as so: where’s Hawkeye? No, wait – that’s not right. Where’s Nick Fury?

Following the steel cable walker massacre from the mid-season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead, you may have thought that the living dead highlight would go unchallenged for quite some time. But Rick's showdown with the Scavengers' nearly indestructible armored walker (in their own version of the rancor pit) threw the gauntlet down once again, and Greg Nicotero has shared concept art of the nightmare-inducing walker.

As in a great Halloween costume, makeup is an important aspect of film. Join us as we examine 10 films where makeup effects played a very large role.
Using Makeup to Create A Style
Example: Edward Scissorhands (1990)
While Edward Scissorhands may be one of Burton’s most beloved characters because of Johnny Depp’s performance, the character is also memorable for his looks. For starters, there is his birds-nest hair. The wispy cob-webb look not only reassured audiences of Edward’s sad, lonely and parentless existence, but it also became an easy identifier for Burton’s gothic style. Indeed, Edward’s wild, untamed yet solid hairstyle was similar to that of Beetlejuice, whose film came out two years prior, and would be similar to many other characters we would see in later Burton films.
Edward’s pasty white make-up helped audiences to understand that he was not just a normal man.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). Ron Perlman is Hellboy once again, this time for Make-a-Wish. Perlman reprised the role -- and donned the iconic red makeup -- to help make the wish of a little boy come true.
According to Spectral Motion, the special effects company behind the "Hellboy" look, Perlman got all done up to help make Zachary's wish come true. Zachary not only wanted to meet Hellboy, but become Hellboy as well. With the help of makeup artists, Zachary's wishes came true.
Perlman starred in "Hellboy" and "Hellboy 2" on the big screen and according to Spectral Motion, "loved the idea" of reprising the role, makeup and all. The makeup process for the film took about four hours, "Hellboy" makeup artist Jake Garber said.
On their Facebook page, Spectral Motion said Perlman ordered a giant meal of burgers, shakes and fries, a la Hellboy.

Piranha 3-D may be the bloodiest film you'll see next year. And behind the carnage is none other than Knb Efx, reuniting with director Alexandre Aja for a third time after 2006's The Hills Have Eyes and last year's Mirrors , both of which offered audiences a generous amount of punctured craniums, slit throats and hacked limbs. None of this compares to the gore-covered canvas Knb's Greg Nicotero, his team and Aja are playing with this time. Within the on-set Piranha FX trailer utilized by Nicotero, Jake Garber, Mike McCarty and Carey Jones one finds corpses and sundry body parts in various stages of consumption - chewed up by the film's titular fish which will be created practically by Knb and CGI visual effects supervisor Derek Wentworth's crew.
