One of the most tragically unsung heroes in action movies, Scott Adkins, has declared that he would love to return to one of his most popular martial arts franchises. Known for roles in the likes of Ninja, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Ip Man 4, The Expendables 2, and John Wick: Chapter 4, the character that put Adkins on the map of many an action movie fan is that of the most complete fighter in the world, Yuri Boyka. And Adkins wants to return to the ring for more.

Another Belgian directing duo we’re committed to championing is Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodsworth (who we also included prematurely on our 2015 list). Starting out as documentarians, they segued into narrative film with 2006’s Khadak, eventually spinning a loosely related trilogy with 2009’s Altiplano and 2012’s The Fifth Season (2012). While it’s possible to obtain copies of the first two, for some confounding reason, their last feature never received distribution in the Us even though it’s a fascinating, transfixing film. They filmed their latest, Kebab Royal, past March, which is now in post-production. Their films are often characterized by offbeat, surreal flourishes, and their latest concerns Nicolas II, the onerous Belgian King. Stuck on an economic mission in Istanbul, he learns of Flanders’ declaration for dependence while he’s away, and a simultaneous solar storm knocks out communication and airplanes.

The After Dark Film Festival will host eight new indie horror features this year. After Dark has already announced that Paul Soter's Dark Circles and the Irish themed Red Clover will participate. Also taking part is Todor Chapkanov's Asylum. This looks like a bloody title involving the supernatural, spirituality and a whole institution run amok. The story is simple. When a troupe of soldiers are sent in a la Aliens, they find the fight of their lives. The first trailer for Asylum is available. In the clip, a small army group must face hundreds of escaped patients. Even the staff seems infected with a powerful and seductive force. The After Dark Originals continue to entice horror watchers to theatres this January 28th. The Task is one of the eight films to be shown by After Dark Films and this is a horror piece set within a reality show. Once immersed in a dilapidated correctional facility, a prison warden comes back from the dead to inflict torture. Cover your eyes and then watch the two minute trailer inside!

You know, it’s probably a damn shame that Scott Adkins’ “Ninja” won’t make it into theaters.
