Long hailed as one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's best episodes as well as Patrick Stewart's favorite, "The Inner Light" won a Hugo Award and, to this day, remains on just about every must-watch list of Generation episodes. The writer, Morgan Gendel, hit pay dirt with the episode, and now he's secured a deal with Welsh broadcaster S4C to develop a new “eco-thriller” science fiction show currently titled Isolation. Not much is known about the series other than an ensemble of characters, attempting to defeat climate change, will come in contact with an alien force capable of direct contact with human minds. That sounds like something straight out of Star Trek, which doesn't come as a surprise. Gendel also wrote the successful episode "Starship Mine" for The Next Generation as well as two episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine—"The Passenger" and "Armageddon Game."

Exclusive: Welsh broadcaster S4C is set to develop an eco-thriller series created by Hugo Award-winning screenwriter Morgan Gendel.

The series, currently titled Isolation, follows a team of scientists working to combat global climate change who discover an even more catastrophic otherworldly threat.

It is being developed for S4C by Hiraeth Productions, Fun Republic Pictures and Karma Film, in association with Gendel’s Cashmere Road Entertainment and Bai-ley as part of S4C International’s Commercial Content Fund, which is designed to realize opportunities for global content across various platforms.

“We are thrilled with the transatlantic team we have assembled to create this ambitious new eco-thriller series,” Gwenllian Gravelle, Drama Commissioner at S4C said in a statement Friday. “We always strive to punch above with our original Welsh series development slate and (Morgan) Gendel’s Isolation does just that for us”.

Patrick Stewart has often spoken about his favorite episode in Star Trek: The Next Generation. While many episodes have become iconic in fans’ minds, the fifth season episode ‘The Inner Light’ has often been regarded as the best episode of Tng and on some occasions, the entire franchise.

The episode won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. However, its deep philosophical ruminations and Picard’s solo act have received much fanfare. Writer Morgan Gendel was reportedly brought in as a freelance writer and had to go above and beyond to make his pitch come to life.

With the release of this week’s “Labyrinths,” Star Trek: Discovery only has two more episodes to go before its series finale, which will have to wrap up not only its season-long Progenitor mystery but multiple character arcs at the same time. It’s a lot for one of the most action-adventure-oriented Trek series ever. Still, we didn’t mind that Discovery took a second to pause with an introspective episode before jumping back into the breakneck action of what will become the final two stories. In “Labyrinths,” Captain Burnham enters inside what she thinks is an ancient Betazoid book. Instead, she ends up in a mindscape created by her own subconscious.

This is classic Star Trek stuff, an entire sci-fi adventure that happens almost exclusively in the mind of one character but is full of emotional stakes that directly impact the physical stakes in the outside world.

The 1992 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Inner Light" has an intriguing sci-fi premise. While merrily soaring through the galaxy, the U.S.S. Enterprise happens upon a very ancient alien probe of unknown origin. Without warning, the probe beams a twinkling glimmer of light onto the Enterprise's bridge, striking Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) right in the brain. Picard passes out on the floor and Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) is unable to revive him. Picard wakes up on a distant planet he doesn't recognize. He's wearing alien clothes and being addressed by a woman named Eline (Margot Rose) who claims to be his wife. Picard is told that his name is actually Kamin and that he has suffered a memory lapse. The "Picard" he recalls was only a dream, and he has actually always lived on this planet, Kataan.

"The Inner Light" is handily one of the best episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The events of the episode are so dramatic that it's a little unusual that Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) didn't bring them up more often in future episodes of the show. Indeed, in the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," the retired admiral mentions that he's finally ready to be a father and let the next step of his life unfold, failing to acknowledge that he already lived to be an old man, already raised his own children and grandchildren, and already fell deeply in love with an alien woman on a distant planet where he lived for many decades. Never mind that it was all a memory implant given to him by a rogue space probe. 

The events of "The Inner Light" dictated that Picard essentially has two lifetimes worth of memories crammed into his head.

After giving us the Guardian of Forever in episode 10, it was going to be hard for Star Trek: Discovery to try and top old-school Trekkie nostalgia. Luckily, the final few episodes of Discovery Season 3 aren’t really trying for over-the-top callbacks. Like the episode “Su’Kal,” episode 12 of Season 3 — “There Is a Tide..” — is fairly light on obvious Easter eggs and shout-outs. That said, some of the more subtle Easter eggs connect to much bigger aspects of canon. And, from a certain point of view, aspects of “There Is a Tide…” scan like a Disco remake of a very fun Tng episode!
