His stage name was inspired by the shock rock singer Screamin' Jay Hawkins after discovering the album "Constipation Blues" in a record store.
He was in three bands while living in New York: Disgusting, The Mad, and Irrational. These bands specialized in gory stage theatrics with graphic special effects.
