There is love of many different kinds in Pj Palmer’s Oscar-qualifying short, and some of it helps and some of it harms.
Love, first of all, between rancher Jimmy (Colman Domingo) and his husband Craig (Malcolm Gets), visible in the way they look at each other, visible also in the way that Jimmy bathes Craig and spoons food into his mouth and does everything in his power to reassure him that he can still see him, that he still recognises the intelligence and personality within his wasted body. Love, also, for the place that they call home, their remote ranch, the tree clad hills around it, the air bright and crisp on the cusp of winter. And love for the animals who inhabit it, though there are not many now: the two dogs and, alone in the vast barn, the gentle bay mare, North Star (Butterscotch).
Then there is another love: that.

Fresh from his Emmy nomination for guest actor in a drama series for his appearance in “Euphoria,” Colman Domingo is set to executive produce P.J. Palmer short “North Star,” in which he also stars.
In “North Star” Domingo plays a patriotic and hardworking rancher and one half of a middle-aged, same-sex couple. His other half Craig (played by Tony award nominee Malcolm Gets) is dying. Tensions arise when Craig’s sister Erin (“Mad Men’s” Audrey Wasilewski) arrives unannounced to whisk him off to see out his final days with his “real” family.
Laura Innes (“Deep Impact”) and Kevin Bacon (“Footloose”) also star, playing televangelists who “push shame, fear, and division as the cornerstones of faith.”
“The Maze Runner’s” Chris Sheffield rounds out the cast.
P.J. Palmer (“The Grapes of Wrath: An American Story”) wrote and directed the short. He was previously series producer on Amazon Prime LGBTQ+ drama “Anyone But Me.

In retrospect, was Oliver's season 3 journey all a bit pointless? At least the supporting cast had plenty to offer this year...
This review contains spoilers.
3.23 My Name Is Oliver Queen
We did it everyone – we made it to the end of Arrow’s third season. It was touch and go there for a while, the Ra’s al Ghul storyline and question of Oliver’s true identity dragging on for half a season longer than many people really cared for, but the important thing now is that it’s done, and we can look back on a complete story from beginning to end, rather than judging it by its parts.
The season as a whole appeared to be about Oliver redefining the “something else” of his opening monologue. The first season was all about him coming to terms with The Hood as vigilante and killer, the second exploring his life as The Arrow.

Nathaniel reporting from Sundance with three quick takes
Dope
The biggest sale at Sundance was this no-stars comedy about three geeky high school seniors who are obsessed with 90s hip hops (that's a character detail and joke factory -- not the plot). Malcolm (Shameik Moore joyfully charismatic in the lead role) a Straight A student who dreams of Harvard and his two best friends Jib (Tony Revolori - just as strong as he was in Grand Budapest Hotel) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons from Transparent in her feature debut) live in "The Bottoms" an impoverished crime-ridden neighborhood. Malcolm gets mixed up with Dom (Rakim Mayers aka A$AP Rocky), a local dope dealer, and soon the three friends are on the run from cops, drug dealers, gang members and continually out of frying pans and into other fires. The film it most reminded me of is Go (1999) for its parade of memorable characters,...

The 2015 Sundance Film Festival doesn't officially start until tomorrow, but films looking to gain an edge are already in full-on promotion mode, as evidenced by the new kinetic trailer for writer-director Rick Famuyiwa's "Dope." World premiering in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, the official synopsis reads: "Malcolm is an anomaly, a 'geek living in the Bottoms,' the drug-infested, gang-run ghetto part of Inglewood, California. A victim of circumstance, but with admirable ambition, Malcolm gets caught in the crossfires of a drug buy gone bad. Using his wits and considerable smarts, he manages to take a dicey situation and make it work in his favor." Produced by Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi (the duo behind Sundance powerhouse "Fruitvale Station"), and featuring original music by Pharrell Williams, "Dope" stars Shameik Moore opposite Tony Revolori ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Kiersey...

As we knew, the catalyst for the episode was the deadline-slash-death warrant issued by Ra’s al Ghul: Find the killer of Ta-er al-Sahfer (that’s Sara to you and me) or the League of Assassins will begin slaughtering the good people of Starling City.
But what followed was a compelling, twisty melange of sleuthing, discovery, uncanny fan speculation and… well, those final few minutes.

Oliver gets some help from an unlikely source in his final showdown with Slade’s army. But will it be enough?
Arrow season two came to a close in a truly epic way. I think my favorite part of this show—aside from, you know, everything—is that much like the comics it came from, it has worked to build its universe and its history so that an episode like last night’s “Unthinkable” can come to pass.
We pick up right where we left off, with Slade’s army rampaging through the city and Amanda Waller preparing to destroy Starling. Bad Boy Roy hasn’t woken up after being dosed with the cure, there’s an army of goons coming for them and all seems lost. Basically, just another day in Oliver’s life.
Roy comes to, though, and he has no idea what’s happened since he left for Bludhaven.

After three years on the boards, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has decided to call it quits on Jan. 5 after a tumultuous, headline-grabbing ride on Broadway that will result in a reported $60 million loss. Malcolm Toohey is a textbook example of a good cop, as we see in the opening of "Felony," written by and starring Joel Edgerton. Toohey is the kind of police officer that doesn't hesitate to charge into a dangerous situation, and by the end of the early moments of the film, his actions find him taking two shots to his bulletproof vest protected chest, all in the name of bringing down a bit player in a much bigger criminal ring. It's the kind of bravery that has earned him the respect of his colleagues. Meanwhile, on the homefront, with a beautiful wife and two young kids, things couldn't look better. But one bad decision, followed by a heat-of-the-moment lie, is all it takes for Malcolm's life to potentially unravel around him. Survivor Review, Season 26, Episode 11
“Come Over to the Dark Side”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Survivor fans love players who make big moves and don’t coast to the end. They’d much rather see a strategist like Rob Cesternino jumping alliances and shaking up the game then watch a dominator like Kim Spradlin. It makes the game exciting and avoids the predictable boots that plagued the South Pacific and One World seasons. The danger for players is that going after the title often doesn’t work. The riskier strategy wins the love of the fans, particularly when it’s done without the arrogance of Russell Hantz. Can players win this way in the game’s current era, however? In a season of returning players, the paranoia is even higher. Telling the wrong person (i.e., Dawn) can ruin any plan. Last week, Malcolm executed a wonderful move...

Can the Three Amigos pull off another crazy week on "Survivor: Caramoan"? Let's find out!
Madeline
After Tribal, nobody seems too upset about Phillip's ouster. Yeah, we can't imagine we'd cry too much over that one. But can the Three Amigos keep shaking things up? It'll be interesting to see what Erik does, since he flipped and nobody knows.
Erik enjoys being the swing vote, but as has been demonstrated before -- Erik is not exactly a master strategist in this game, so it remains to be seen if he actually works this to his advantage.
Meanwhile, Cochran is pretty pumped to have been part of such a crazy Tribal Council. Yeah, we would be too. The "Survivor" fans in us would completely lose our minds.
Speaking of losing one's mind, Brenda is freaking out a little bit about what this means for the Favorites alliance. Man, Brenda...

"Survivor's" back, you guys! I'm extra excited because I only got to cover part of last season because of maternity leave. It seems like I've been away so long! I need me some Jeff Probst.
Who's excited about Fans vs. Favorites II: Electric Boogaloo? We aren't sure how many of the returning players are "favorites," but it's a fun group, so that's Ok.
It's rather awesome the Fans are on a boat and the Faves are in 'copters. Dramatic entrance, indeed. Out of the Faves, we're excited to see Dawn and Phillip the most. Dawn because she's awesome, and Phillip because he's cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Brandon? We are not so excited to see. We've had enough of the Hantz family, thanks. And Brandon definitely isn't as interesting as either of his uncles.
The Arrivals
The Fans take their spot on a mat, and promptly get really excited at...

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 4, Episode 9 of CBS' "The Good Wife," titled "A Defense Of Marriage."
"Oh come on," I said as "The Good Wife" wrapped a very enjoyable episode. Both because "A Defense of Marriage" was ending and because Alicia's actions.
Stockard Channing was nothing short of amazing and incredibly entertaining. Seeing her interact with her TV kids as Veronica, Alicia and Owen's mother, gave viewers some insight into Alicia as a character. From her constant promotion of "Vagina: A New Biography" to discussing her love of circumcised penises, I loved every minute she was on screen.
Veronica was in town for the holidays ... and to sort out a will. Her third husband, Malcolm, died and left her nothing because his son convinced him Veronica was cheating on him. With the help of David Lee and Owen -- Owen lied on the...

Survivor: Philippines Review, Season 25, Episode 4
“Create a Little Chaos”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Russell Swan is a very competitive guy. He claims to strive for excellence in everything that he does. When he loses a challenge, it must be part of God’s plan, not because of the superior performance of his opponents. This approach makes sense for a 13-year-old, but it seems pretty silly for a guy who’s been on this Earth for 45 years. After this week’s immunity challenge, he smashes a bottle of rice and can’t understand why he’s being put through so much turmoil. After mistakenly calling Jeff Probst “Lord”, Russell calms down but doesn’t step away from his simplistic view on athletic competitions. It’s an uncomfortable moment for everyone involved, but it also provides fascinating insights about his approach. Even with the drama, it’s more interesting...

Can Matsing pull it together on "Survivor: Philippines"? After she was kicked off, Roxy wasn't sure they could do it.
Tandang
Abi doesn't really trust Rc so much anymore, plus she's whining about her bum knee, so she wants to just lie around on the beach all day. Plus, she's snapping at Rc like a total lunatic and then goes to Peter and tells him about the Hidden Idol clue without asking Rc first. She wants them to look for it without Rc. Wow, way to just completely throw away your alliance.
And Peter decides he needs to take charge and approaches Lisa about blindsiding Mike if need be, who just goes along with it. Hmm. She does know she could get Mike and Artis her own alliance and go against Peter, Rc and Abi, right?

Mike Skupin from Australia, Russell Swan from Samoa, and Jonathan Penner from Cook Islands and Micronesia are back as team captains for three separate tribes. These guys couldn't even take care...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

A few months ago we tracked down ten of our favorite celebrities from years past to see what they we're up to. We were in the mood to reminisce further, so today we're happy to bring you ten more!
Adrian Zmed
Famous for his roles in Bachelor Party, Grease 2 (maybe that’s infamous?) and TV’s Tj Hooker and hosting Dance Fever, Zmed hasn’t had many acting credits in recent years. Now 58, he’s lately concentrated on theater work and appearing on board Princess Cruise ships in a singing and dancing review.
Randy Harrison
The erstwhile Justin Taylor from Showtime’s Queer as Folk (2000-2005) will be featured in a small role as a waiter in the upcoming comedy Gayby and is currently half of a two-actor cast starring in a touring production of the play Red, which recently ran at the Cleveland Play House. The out Harrison...

Hello, fellow Ringlets! Sorry that I wasn't around to recap Ringer last week, but I was off in Fake Paris New Orleans drinking Bloody Marys and eating gumbo. But I'm back and all caught up, and ready to shoot the Shidget with y'all about CW's hilariously twisty soap.
When we last left the Ringer gang, they were in the Hamptons enjoying cake, breaking vases and slapping the Max Factor out of one another. After Gemma (Tara Summers) confronted Shidget (Sarah Michelle Gellar) about her affair with Henry, Shidge busted out and told her that she's not really Siobhan.
So let's start with last week: Gemma gets all Encyclopedia Brown Ginger and finds an old New Year's video that reveals a scar on Siobhan's arm that can be seen from space but that no character so far has noticed missing. Meanwhile, Bridget's sponsor/lover Malcolm (Mike Colter) is still getting shot...

We’re back for another round of Terra Nova. This week’s threat, the colony deals with virus hijinks. Did it evolve beyond the usual formulaic stuff we’ve seen before on other shows or did it go extinct like the dinosaurs? Lets see.
Quick ‘n’ Dirty Review:
We start with a man at a remote outpost playing with a huge green beetle. Seriously, he’s playing with the beetle the way a child would. Beetle escapes said crazy man, who gives chase outside. He then sees a huge carnosaur, who promptly swoops down and devours him. Nice way to start the day.
Back at the main Terra Nova colony, Jim and Commander Taylor are discussing how Outpost 3 (which we just saw) has not communicate back to them in about 3 days. So Taylor will be heading out with Elisabeth to investigate since Outpost 3 is a scientific research station. During that time,...

Hi, everyone - Brent here, back for the third week to recap the twisty new CW drama, Ringer.
Or wait ... am I really Brent, or in fact his long-lost identical bald-headed twin who was presumed dead but has really been hiding out in Fake Paris for the last two years??
Okay, seriously - I'm not Brent. But I am excited to be double-crossing you with SnapCaps of Ringer (or, as I like to call it, "The Apparent Trap") going forward. Or at least I hope to be excited, assuming the episodes improve - because this week's was a snoozer. How can fake pregnancies, real pregnancies, a dozen affairs, a cabal of scheming Brits, countless disused lofts, cell phone hijinks, and Two Times the Buffy be anything less than amazing? Let's find out.
"I'm not leaving you alone until you tell me where your sister is. And stop calling me 'carbonara'.

"Listening" is the key to good acting, according to Helen Stenborg. Co-starring Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theatre in Morris Panych's "Vigil" gives her the chance to exercise that talent. This two-hander centers on the evolving relationship between a misanthropic young man (Malcolm Gets) and his dying, estranged aunt Grace (Stenborg), who barely speaks. While the 84-year-old Minneapolis native has never played a silent character before, her preparation for this part is basically the same as for any other. There is one major difference: She will not share certain elements of Grace's inner life with Gets or the director, Stephen Dimenna. "Sometimes they ask me, 'What are you thinking?' That's my secret. But it's interesting: If I change my thoughts, I'll get a different reaction from Malcolm." She adds she is able to offer variety in her silent responses, by registering his change of mood.At this point in her six-decade career,...

After 30 years, Kemp has come to say goodbye to his sick, elderly aunt. But don't order the flowers for the service just yet. Performed as part of Westport Country Playhouse's 2008 Season, Vigil is the much lauded, new play by award-winning Morris Panych, one of Canada's most celebrated playwrights. Starring Tony Award nominees Malcolm Gets (Television's "Caroline in the City") and theatre legend Helen Stenborg, Vigil tells the wickedly funny story of a selfish bank drudge who is tending to the dying aunt he hasn't seen in 30 years. She, however, isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Vigil is sure to appeal to those who love their comedy with a dark twist.
