Marco Ramirez is breaking out into the world of sports dramas with La Mquina. Having begun his career as a writer on the Emmy-nominated and winning dramas Sons of Anarchy and Orange is the New Black, Ramirez began making a name for himself in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a writer for Daredevil, as well as the co-showrunner of season 2 with Douglas Petrie, before going on to be the co-creator and showrunner for Netflix's MCU crossover, The Defenders. More recently, Ramirez was also the co-developer of Jordan Peele's Twilight Zone reboot.
La Mquina centers on the story of its titular character, Esteban Osuna, a boxer on the verge of being past his prime and gearing up for retirement to spend more time with his children and ex-wife after suffering a heavy loss. The Mexican-born creative duo have frequently partnered with one another on screen throughout their careers, including for the Oscar-nominated classic Y tu mam tambin and Carlos Cuarn's well-received directorial debut Rudy y Cursi, while also co-founding the production company Canana Films. In recent years, both Bernal and Luna have found success in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchises with their roles in Werewolf by Night and both Rogue One and Andor.

About 20 years ago, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diega Luna collaborate on Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Y tu mama también’. This tantalising portrait of youthful energy helped all their careers soar higher. Now, the two actors have reunited on ‘La Máquina’, a boxing drama series on Hulu that follows an ageing boxer and his manager and close friend. It explores the corruption in this profession while offering a journey through the minds of their characters. Besides Garcia Bernal and Luna, the miniseries also stars Eiza Gonzalez, Lucia Mendez, Karina Gidi, and Andres Delgado in key supporting roles.

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have been friends since they were boys growing up in Mexico City, and they experienced a major career breakout together starring in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 coming-of-age road trip film Y Tu Mamá También. Given that shared past, you might expect them to share the screen often, in the same way that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have across their careers. Instead, they’ve only starred in two other films together, most recently back in 2012’s Casa di mi Padre. So their new Hulu miniseries,...

23 years after they starred together in Y Tu Mama Tambien, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna return in Hulu's La Mquina, for a completely different type of conflict. Once more cast as long-time friends with a complex dynamic as they were in Alfonso Cuarn's coming-of-age drama, the Mexican acting duo and frequent collaborators are again on strong form.
Far removed from the guts and glory spirit of the Rocky franchise - the torch-bearer when it comes to screen boxing stories, of course - La Mquina is an increasingly claustrophobic drama set around the world of boxing. Unafraid of dipping into the realms of farce, the miniseries has the characteristic political undertones of many of Garcia Bernal and Luna's other projects, but focused on the microcosmic target of corruption, deceit, and disaster in the sporting world as the backdrop of two men fighting to gain control of their lives and legacies.

Longtime fans of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal know the magic that happens when these two Mexican actors, childhood friends and longtime collaborators get together on screen. From the sexy road trip adventure of “Y Tu Mamá También” to the heartwarming soccer-centric “Rudo y Cursi” and even the slapstick “Casa de Mi Padre,” the duo brings the best out of each other. So it’s not surprising that Hulu placed their bets on the pair to help them produce their first ever Spanish-language original series to debut during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“La Máquina,” a limited-series about an aging boxer’s comeback with a criminal underworld twist, starts out delivering on that premise. But what you get extends far beyond that.

Hulu’s boxing series La Máquina begins not with glimpses of in-ring action, but with the drama taking place immediately around it. The camera whips through the crowds of entertainers, security guards, and personnel found backstage, all desperately trying to get things in order before the lights go down and the entrance music for the fight plays.
Eventually, we’re brought to the main man himself, Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna (Gael García Bernal), a veteran boxer known for his grit and determination. La Máquina carries itself with the same relentless energy: From the movements of the camera to the colors and the outsized personalities of the characters themselves, everything about it is vibrant and alive.
Esteban looks the part of the perfect prizefighter, though his hair is graying around the temples. He has the slightly gawky, boyish charm you find in many top athletes, perhaps the result of a life...

"If we're doomed, we're doomed together." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for a new series titled La Máquina (which just translates to The Mask) created by TV writer Marco Ramirez. It's also produced by and stars Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna through their own production company, with a streaming debut this October on Hulu. "Winning has a price." The sports series follows an aging boxer whose crafty manager secures one last shot at a title - with a fight coming up in 12 weeks. But if they want to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force and the boxer's own ailing mind... The cast features Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Eiza González, Jorge Perugorría, Andrés Delgado, and Karina Gidi, Dariam Coco + Lucía Méndez. This really makes me want to recommend Gael García Bernal's wrestling film Cassandro. The series looks pretty generic until the psychological thriller elements kick in.

Mexican director Diego Luna’s Abel (2010), a beguiling comedy-drama about a strange young boy, throws up many more questions than answers. For a while it appears that young Abel might be both catatonic and possessed of telekinetic powers, such is the effect of his brooding presence on household objects. Later, I wondered whether the story was veering off into the territory of a body-swap comedy. One thing is clear, though: Luna’s film is a heartfelt depiction of a devoted mother who is determined to do right by her troubled son.
The face of nine-year-old Abel (Christopher Ruíz Esparza) is first seen in huge close-ups as he watches a snail crawling along his finger. After two years in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital, doctors now want to transfer him to Mexico City. His mother Cecilia (Karina Gidi) can’t bear the idea of a further separation and hopes...

Diego Luna makes a fine directorial debut with this insightful satire on Mexican family life
As an actor, Diego Luna made his name as the horny teen starring opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in the 2001 movie Y Tu Mamá También; now he makes an accomplished debut as a feature director with this enigmatic satirical nightmare, set in Mexico, on the theme of patriarchy and the family. Abel (Christopher Ruíz-Esparza) is a disturbed nine-year-old in a psychiatric hospital, having suffered a breakdown and retreated into silence, apparently as a reaction to his father's abandoning the family three years before. His mother Cecilia (Karina Gidi) persuades the doctors to allow him home, where Abel begins to speak, eerily inhabiting the persona of the missing dad: talking sternly to the teenage daughter, demanding his breakfast etc. The family plays along – and Luna shows how Abel's delusion answers their need to have a man about the house,...

Mexican actor, Diego Luna's fascinating directional debut, Abel, tells the story of a mentally ill nine year-old boy who becomes convinced he's the man of the house when he returns from the hospital for a trial week at home.
No longer able to stay in the women's ward, Abel's mother is distraught when told he might need treatment further afield in Mexico City Hospital. Convinced his mother's love and the reassuring natural presence of his brother, Paul, and sister, Selene, will cure him, she's given a week to see if his new surroundings will prompt an improvement. Within a day, Abel is miraculously talking again, but what he utters is rather puzzling.
Initial signs of Abel's deluded belief that he's the man of the house afford moments of surreal light comedy as he fixes the toilet; takes up the good parent's nightly rounds of putting the children...

Although it's useful as a preview to the 113 features this year's fest (every title links to its respective Sundance page), consider it a living, breathing document with Facebook and Twitter links to follow filmmakers and our own Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and Alison Willmore (@alisonwillmore) as they negotiate the snowy slopes and occasionally treacherous festivalgoing experience that Park City has to offer, not to mention our constantly updated Sundance home page.

Tons of Park City alumni are bringing their latest films, but I'm a bit surprised that March-pegged releases of The Weinstein's All Good Things and Focus Features' Greenberg aren't getting a Park City push. Instead, as expected, Sony Pictures Classics will show up and they get to showcase Get Low and A Prophet (Spotlight section) once again, and they'll preem Holofcener's Please Give. Overture will introduce Philip Seymour Hoffman's directing debut (Jack Goes Boating) and Fox Searchlight will preem Duplass Bros.' untitled comedy, which I'm calling Center of Attention - because its a great title considering the subject matter. - With the biggie announcements in the Premieres sections, I think I'm officially batting .300 with my predictions. On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.
The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.
Premieres
All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...

Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the out-of-competition section of Premieres. Some very anticipated films that we have been tracking are included. Films like The Runaways, starring Kristen Bell and Dakota Fanning as the 70s girl rock group headliners, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. We have also been following The Company Men and Nowhere Boy, so we are excited to see these films at Sundance 2010.

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).
In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Yesterday we were happy to bring you the Competition Line-Up for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, which we'll be covering in January live from Park City, Utah. And today we've got the rest of the films, including the Premieres, Spotlight, Next, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier selections. Among the premieres are several major titles, including John Wells' The Company Men, starring Casey Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello and Tommy Lee Jones. Also, another Casey Affleck led cast in Michael Winterbottom's The Killer Inside Me. Philip Seymour Hoffman will make his directorial debut with Jack Goes Boating, and the John Lennon teen years feature Nowhere Boy, starring Aaron Johnson, will also make its premiere. The big premieres are one thing, but where Sundance has really been great the past few years is in the discovered films of the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight categories. Last year, Park City at Midnight delivered films such as...

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films.
