- Gillett was the father of Ted Gillette, an aircraft designer and ham radio engineer.
- According to Shamus Culhane and other animators who met Gillett in person, Burt Gillett suffered from mood swings. His mood would abruptly change from excessive enthusiasm to violent rages. Culhane speculated that Gillett's mood swings were due to undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
- He has directed two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Flowers and Trees (1932) & Three Little Pigs (1933).
