New Wave of Accusations Ignites MeToo Reckoning in France: ‘Women Are Fed Up. The Anger Is Enormous’
France’s film industry is undergoing a new MeToo reckoning, dominating news cycles, policy debates and even the goodie bag of the Cesar Awards’ nominees dinner, which included a flyer headlined, “The cultural sector together against sexist and sexual violence.”
The French #MeToo movement also made its way into the Berlinale, where actor Nora Hamzawi said that director Jacques Doillon’s upcoming film “Third Grade” — in which Hamzawi stars — shouldn’t be released due to the sexual misconduct allegations recently filed against the filmmkaker.
France’s major producers guilds have also issued a statement demanding the National Film Board (Cnc) and the Minister of Culture to put specific guidelines in place. Those demands include the appointment of “experts specialized in the prevention and management of sexual violence to set up a safe environment at the start of every shoot;” additional resources for organizations fighting sexual misconduct; and setting up an...

Some 600 French art and entertainment world figures have signed a “counter-petition” decrying moves to defend iconic actor Gérard Depardieu in the face of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.
The petition described a recent open letter in support of Depardieu, signed by 56 cinema world celebrities, and French President Emmanuel Macron’s public defense of the actor on a talkshow before Christmas as a slap in the face for all victims of sexual violence.
“It is the sinister and perfect illustration of the world which refuses to let things change,” read the letter posted on the site of investigative news website Mediapart on Friday.

Honestly, if I didn't have a calendar hanging over my home computer, I'd lose track of the days entirely. Perhaps that's why the title of the anxious thriller Darkness Falls appeals to me so much. We debuted the trailer last month and the film debuts on VOD today, courtesy of Vertical Entertainment, so consider this a reminder. Shawn Ashmore, Gary Cole, Richard Harmon, Daniella Alonso, Sonya Walger, Vahina Giocante, and Lin Shaye star. I'm a big fan of Gary Cole's past work, and Shawn Ashmore looks quite brooding and complex in the trailer, so all bodes well, especially if you're in the mood for some more anxiety and brooding in your life today or this...

"These guys are pros." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a thriller titled Darkness Falls, the latest from French filmmaker Julien Seri. This premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year, and arrives on VOD in June. After his wife's suicide, Detective Jeff Anderson becomes convinced that she has been murdered. Obsessed with his own investigation, he finds out that his wife was the victim of a team of father-and-son serial killers and sets out to stop them before they kill more women. The film stars Shawn Ashmore as Detective Anderson, with Gary Gole, Richard Harmon, Daniella Alonso, Sonya Walger, Vahina Giocante, and Lin Shaye. This seems a bit derivative, but still looks like a solid thriller. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Julien Seri's Darkness Falls, direct from Vertical's YouTube: After his wife's suicide, Detective Jeff Anderson (Shawn Ashmore) becomes convinced that she has in fact been murdered.

Quickly establishing a menacing vibe, the trailer for the upcoming Darkness Falls fairly well throbs with anxiety. Shawn Ashmore, Gary Cole, Richard Harmon, Daniella Alonso, Sonya Walger, Vahina Giocante, and Lin Shaye star. If you're at all familiar with his past performances, Gary Cole can slip on a dark character so it fits like a glove, but the one who jumps out at me in the trailer is Shawn Ashmore, who reminds that, as likable as he can be in his other roles, he is no lightweight when it comes to dramatic power. The official synopsis lays down the dirt: "After his wife's...

Ahead of the UK premiere of serial killer thriller Anderson Falls at Arrow Video FrightFest Glasgow 2020, director Julien Seri reflects on the his first ‘American’ experience, challenging fight scenes and the importance of personal vision.
It has been five years since we premiered Night Fare at FrightFest London, what have you been up to since then?
I worked on two, very singular, projects as a producer and/or director. I signed for both with Wild Bunch, but we’ve failed to produce them yet. So I keep fighting. And I did a lot of commercials, TV series and music videos.
When did you first hear about the Anderson Falls script and why did you think it was perfect for you to direct?
I received the script late 2017. I read it and said ‘yes’ in the same day. It was a perfect American experience for me because it was low budget,...

99 Francs
PARIS -- Adapted from Frederic Beigbeder's novel of the same title -- one of the biggest French best-sellers of recent years -- and starring the very bankable Jean Dujardin (Brice de Nice, 0SS 117: Cairo Nest of Spies), Jan Kounen's 99 Francs represents a scathing -- for France -- satire on the advertising industry, one that is likely to do excellent business in its home territory.
Dujardin plays Octave Parango, whizz-kid creative director of the advertising agency Ross and Witchcraft whom we first meet standing on the roof of a skyscraper in driving rain apparently bent on committing suicide. In voice-over -- there is a great deal of VO and direct address to camera -- Octave explains that he is the master of the world, the man who decides today what Joe Public will want to buy tomorrow. And that he is a very bad lot indeed.
He then leads us through the stages of his career, presenting his colleagues -- fellow creator Charlie (Jocelyn Quivrin), finance director Jeff (Patrick Mille), girlfriend Sophie (Vahina Giocante) -- and CEO Alfred Duler (Nicolas Marie), of his leading client, a major dairy products manufacturer.
Quite how bad a lot he is becomes rapidly apparent as the film watches him snort large quantities of cocaine and vent his cynical wit on all around him. When Sophie informs him that she is pregnant with his child, he proves incapable of producing an authentic human response. But he is lucid enough and decides finally to rebel, notably by sabotaging the launch of a new brand of yogurt.
Comparable with last year's Thank you for Smoking, Jason Reitman's acerbic take on lobbyists for Big Tobacco, 99 Francs is strong stuff for France where advertisers traditionally wield considerable influence among television broadcasters who in turn have a major say as regards which movies get made.
Kounen, working from a script by Nicolas Charlet and Bruno Laveine with some impromptu input by Dujardin, pulls few punches in his portrayal of advertising agencies as dens of narcissistic, coke-fueled opportunists on the make. Having made 30 or so ads himself, mostly in England, he presumably knows something of what he is talking about. His approach is not always subtle, and cliche is always lurking, but the movie is constantly inventive and the jokes score more hits than misses.
Some of the humor will fall flat with non-French audiences, but the movie is also dotted with references to well-known movie directors such as Sergio Leone, Stanley Kubrick, Wong Kar-Wai and Federico Fellini. Kounen is more interested in effects than in narrative clarity. The reality status of a number of scenes appears problematic -- real, pastiche, publicity or drug-induced fantasy? -- though in this the movie reflects the novel.
The pace is fast and furious. Since Kounen deploys the techniques of advertising the better to debunk them, he risks burdening the spectator with sensory overload. But it's all good fun with real bite, and France's best-known yogurt manufacturer will not be best pleased to see its brand name lightly disguised as Madone.

Riviera
Screened
Locarno International Film Festival In Competition
Riviera is a very broad title for Anne Villaceque's narrow look at a mother and daughter trying to get along amid the temptation and corruption that surrounds them on the Cote d'Azur.
Slow and sometimes incoherent, the film is unlikely to draw much attention to its ill thought out tale of what can happen to a pretty blonde who doesn't know how to say no.
Using close-ups to the point of claustrophobia, writer/director Villaceque follows Antoinette (Miou-Miou) as she cleans rooms at a swanky hotel and worries about her seldom seen daughter Stella (Vahina Giocante), who table dances at a nightclub named Milk.
Very little information is offered about the pair although there's no man about the house and when not staring vacantly, Antoinette is not above inviting the pizza delivery guy in for a beer.
Stella is vacuously gullible and believes pretty much what any man tells her including the nightclub boss who says that if she's a very good girl she can make a lot of money and get a boob job.
Impressed by a respectable looking real estate salesman named Romansky (Elie Semoun), whose room she cleans, Mom puts a card from Milk under his door. Romansky is the kind of man who is delighted equally by the automatic curtains in his room and the pornography on the television. He gets himself quickly down to Milk where he immediately spots Stella, and its downhill from there.
What might have been a cautionary tale is let down by inadequate narrative, empty scenes and the director's evident enchantment with Giocante, a love affair not entirely shared by the camera.
