In addition to Krusty the Clown, Bumblebee Man and, very briefly, Gabbo, one of Springfield’s most famous entertainers is, of course, Rainier Wolfcastle, star of the popular McBain movies, as well as Undercover Nerd and Help! My Son Is a Nerd (it isn’t a comedy).
The McBain franchise, which was first introduced in the second season of The Simpsons, is an action parody smorgasbord containing elements of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, with a healthy dose of every movie Arnold Schwarzenegger ever made — although Schwarzenegger would later rip off Rainier Wolfcastle, so it all evens out in the end.
As we’ve mentioned before, those early clips of McBain were designed to form one cohesive story — a more cohesive one than some real Schwarzenegger movies, to be honest. Fans, in fact, have even edited the scenes together as if it were a real film.

The story goes thus: it was 1985, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, having enjoyed nearly two decades of cinematic success in his native country, wanted to extend his reach into the United States. Chan had already tried to infiltrate America in 1980 with Robert Clouse's film "The Big Brawl," but while it was highly respected by martial arts fans, "Brawl" wasn't the massive hit Chan wanted. Chan had already directed four movies by 1985 but still felt that an American director could translate his fightin' sensibilities for a North American audience more accurately. So, he hired genre filmmaker James Glickenhaus to helm the 1985 actioner "The Protector."
Chan and Glickenhaus butted heads throughout production, as Glickenhaus refused to film fight sequences in a way Chan approved of. At the end of production, Chan merely re-edited the film himself and directed new scenes in the hope of salvaging the project.

Consider, if you will, the swimming pool. While there are many flashy, outrageous exceptions based on eccentricity, wealth, and other factors, most swimming pools are of a fairly standard make. If a household backyard swimming pool has any character at all, it's because of what one puts into it: family and friends, memories, activities, and so on.
In this way, a swimming pool is akin to genre filmmaking. That is to say, the structure is fairly generic, the aesthetic is borrowed from bits and pieces of other models, and the entire enterprise seeks to serve a general function. Yet within those parameters, there can be room for variation, enough that the experience can be pleasantly unique.
That's the case with "Night Swim," the latest mid-budget offering from producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse label. Like the genre and exploitation gurus of days gone by, Blum has made a minor empire...

Peter Weller and Sam Elliott on the Forty Deuce under the Times Square Theatre marquee in James Glickenhaus' Shakedown.Movie-lovers!Welcome back to The Deuce Notebook, a collaboration between Notebook and The Deuce Film Series, our monthly event at Nitehawk Williamsburg that excavates the facts and fantasies of cinema's most infamous block in the world: 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. For each screening, my co-hosts and I pick a flick that we think embodies the era of late-night celluloid consumption and present the theater at which it premiered.American writer, director, and producer James Glickenhaus made action movies: eye-for-an-eye fables starring virtuous underdogs and righteous renegades—rogue cops, ex-Army officers, and cunning FBI agents settling scores with street scum, Mafiosi, and the international drug cartel. These low-cost, high-grossing blockbusters projected do-good Nationalism onto the silver screens and boob tubes of the 1980s, encouraging a generation of bleary-eyed Boy Scouts to stay strong,...

That’s a title with a ton of exploitation promise, don’t you think? Now imagine being a ten year old movie freak that ingested anything remotely salacious or possibly brain-damaging into his system to increase his cinematic database. A match made in heaven? Probably not in the eyes of those who would shelter such fragile minds from the grotesque and lurid underbelly of commercial film, but a definite boon to the kid looking specifically for the grotesque and lurid. Well folks, the buck pretty much not only stops at The Exterminator (1980), it finds itself aflame as celluloid floats to the ground in messy tribute. The ash of this one spread everywhere.
And I know, it’s not horror; but to a ten year old, exploitation and horror is completely simpatico - violence, nudity, and degradation were not only on the menu, they were pretty much alone on the laminated list.

The Astrologer is a weird-ass movie. After recently watching this debut film from director James Glickenhaus, that’s my main takeaway. Well, that and the fact that this is the perfect double feature companion to Larry Cohen’s God Told Me To. Alexie (Bob Byrd) is a scientist that works for a secret government agency. This agency studies zodiac signs […]...

As the U.S. dealt with the debris of another war in the mid-’70s, a faction of people started to look to the stars for guidance. No, I don’t mean God or any other proclaimed deity, but rather astrology, the study of the stars and planets and their relationship to human movement. It goes without saying that a little cultural reflection was in order, and before long we had not one, but two films entitled The Astrologer. One holds a small bit of cult cache. This is the other one. Leave it to Severin Films, then, to choose to champion the underdog with a fun, new Blu-ray presentation. Severin has their reasons, though: this was the first film by well-regarded action director James Glickenhaus (Shakedown). And who doesn’t want more Glickenhaus in their lives?

February’s home media releases are ending in a big way, with 20 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto various formats this week. Leading the pack this Tuesday are Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which comes home on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD, as well as Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, which will be available on both Blu and DVD. Scream Factory is showing Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary Two some love this week with their Collector’s Edition release, and for those of you into wacky, obscure cult classics, you’ll definitely want to pick up Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-ray for Spookies.
Arrow Video is keeping busy with their Special Edition releases of Deadly Manor and the One Missed Call trilogy, and Severin Films has given James Glickenhaus’ The Astrologer an HD overhaul this week, too.

After a second failed attempt to break into the American market with The Protector (1985), a film in which he repeatedly conflicted with director James Glickenhaus, Jackie Chan returned to Hong Kong determined to top Hollywood. According to Chan, he told Glickenhaus: “You do The Protector and I’ll do Police Story, and I’ll show you what the action movie is all about.” Today, more than 30 years after its release, Police Story remains one of the best-loved and most impressive action films by the most popular action star in the world, and has been given the restoration treatment and Metrograph engagement befitting a true classic, while Glickenhaus is best known for actually writing and directing a movie called McBain. After knocking around Hong Kong for several years as a stuntman and bit player, and a few attempts at becoming a lead in cheap Bruce Lee knock-offs, Jackie Chan finally burst...

Recently I have been going through my old Hong Kong movie catalogue and have re-watched a number of classics and not so classics. With this I decided to recheck one of Jackie Chan’s most popular series of films, The Police Story series, which began back in 1985, with the latest instalment only being a few years ago in 2013. Police Story – 1985 Jackie Chan had previously tried to make it in Hollywood with Battle Creek Brawl (1980), The Cannonball Run (1981) and its sequel Cannonball Run 2 (1984), none of which used him to his best potential. In 1985 Jackie Chan tried once more to break the Hollywood market. His attempt at this turned out to be James Glickenhaus’ The Protector (1985). The film...

The best way to describe how I approach Fantastic Fest is like summer camp. It happens once a year. You get back together with old friends. Yet in this case, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and Fantastic movies you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. This will be more third time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fourth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin every September. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night food fight, a karaoke party, a “nerd rap throwdown,” and the signature event at the festival – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: Jan. 15, 2013
Price: DVD $12.99, Blu-ray $19.93
Studio: Shout! Factory
Jackie Chan aims to take care of business in Crime Story.
Jackie Chan does some serious ass-kicking in two of his earlier—but not too early—action thriller movies: The Protector (1985) and Crime Story (1993).
Written and directed by James Glickenhaus, The Protector, an American production, stars Jackie and Danny Aiello (Once Upon a Time in America) as a pair of New York cops sent to Hong Kong to catch a drug lord who has kidnapped the daughter of his former associate. There’s a healthy amount of Chan’s trademark martial arts and stuntwork, but the Hollywood-styled action sequences definitely dominate the film in this case.
In Crime Story, Jackie is the proverbial police detective on the edge, who must race against time to solve a deadly kidnapping case. Based on the true story of a billionaire abducted in an ambush,...

You may have just mortgaged your life! Shock gore master Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery is one of the finest typically single-minded exercises in zombie terror. Its just a shame no-one told the Boyle family who move into a gothic style house (by a cemetery) with a bloody past and a guts spraying future, what is yet to come! You’d think they’d twig given the basement door is nailed shut that they should get the hell out. Our Deaths, in memoriam was the project title of Lav Diaz' Kagadanan sa Banwaan Ning mga Engkanto (2007). For the Ferroni Brigade, it became the motto of Venice 2011—specters of dear lives gone seemed to roam the event, the Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica as well as the Esposizione internazionale d'arte, and beyond.
We always commemorate the murder of Nika Bohinc and Alexis Tioseco on September 1st 2009, quietly, invariably in Venice; it was here that we heard about the crime; now, whenever we go to the press room to check our e-mails, deep down something inside us is afraid of getting another message like that one; fittingly, one of the last films we saw this year was Diaz' latest, Siglo ng Pagluluwal (Century of Birthing, 2011), which ends with a dedication to them, and talks about the way our loved ones, just like cherished ideas, notions and visions are essentially eternal,...

Many—maybe too many, looking at this bunch of bone-tired warriors of Av-virtue—were the travels the Ferroni Brigade embarked on all through 2011: oftentimes for festivals all over Europe, sometimes for visits to this archive or that as part of our programming arbeit (to be read with a Japanese drawl). During those months in the dark, we saw a lot—some of which chimed and rhymed with new works we encountered in this multiplex back home or that gallery abroad, on this collector's Steenbeck or in that producer's private projection room (they still exist).
On one of those trips, we were joined by our main Mubi-man, His Kasness a.k.a. the Kasest with whom we plunged one evening into a brainstorming on what The Festival would look and feel like (truth be told: it was more like a communal delirium—but what do you expect from folks sitting...

When I first came across the fantastically misleading artwork for a ropey, BBFC-sanitised VHS of The Exterminator in my local video shop, I could but dream of the grisly thrills it held in store. 'Some years' later, that flame-thrower wielding, black helmeted vigilante still holds a giddy allure, even if experience tells you that the film itself can never quite live up to the one imagined in an excitable teenager's imagination. Yet coming back to James Glickenhaus's 1980 'video nasty' with fresh eyes reveals an engaging, flawed, and gripping revenge flick. Is it the all-out, non-stop, action-packed orgy of lurid nastiness it was once billed as? No, but its charms lie elsewhere. Vigilantes in movies have always been a popular concept, from the D.W. Griffiths 1913 western A Misunderstood Boy to last year’s Kick-Ass audiences have enjoyed the idea of “Ordinary Joes” taking the law into their own hands to right society’s wrongs and ensure justice is done. While vigilantes have remained a regular theme throughout the years, the genre has never been more prolific than during the 1970s and early 80s. Films such as Taxi Driver, Death Wish and The Exterminator, which is released on Blu-ray for the first time this week, took vigilantism to new levels, pushing boundaries of acceptable violence on film and reflecting the changes in American values following the Vietnam War.

Headlining this new season is the world TV premiere of Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship and Videotape, which will be broadcast on November 4th @ 10.55pm
Directed by renowned filmmaker Jake West (Doghouse, Evil Aliens) and produced by Marc Morris, (co-author of ‘Art of the Nasty’ and ‘Shock Horror: Astounding Artwork from the Video Nasty Era’) – both of whom are pictured above – this era-defining documentary features reflective interviews with filmmakers Neil Marshall and Christopher Smith as well as charting the heroic stand taken by journalist/author Martin Barker, who single-handedly came out in protest against what he saw as the erosion of civil liberties.

New York City was a different place a few decades ago. Violent crime rates more than tripled between 1966 and 1981, and the city was nothing like the "Disney-fied," family friendly version presented today. While one might mourn the loss of grindhouse theaters during its cleanup, the city could be a pretty rough place back then.
Considering the crime rate, it's no surprise that public support was behind Bernie Goetz. The victim of a violent attack three years earlier, Goetz shot four men on the Number 2 express train in December of 1984, claiming he felt threatened by their actions. Charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, assault and several weapons charges, a jury convicted Goetz on a single offense, illegal possession of a firearm, and he served part of a one-year sentence.

Now this is some exciting news, tinged as it is with an air of nostalgia for me, as those fine folk at Synapse are set to release the ultra-violent classick The Exterminator. I remember watching this, along with Warning Sign, Poltergeist and many others, on the wonder that was Laserdisc. Believe me, it stuck in my mind. Who can forget the infamous meat grinder scene? Ah, good times. On September 11th Synapse will be releasing the remastered Director’s Cut in Hi-Def glory on Blu-ray and DVD combo pack. Excited yet? Of course you are!
Christopher George, Robert Ginty, and Samantha Eggar star in The Exterminator, James Glickenhaus’ explosive story of Vietnam vet John Eastland (Ginty), a man who launches a bloody vendetta against the New York underworld when his best friend is brutally beaten by a vicious street gang. There is a good reason why many genre fans love Synapse Films. They are fans first and an awesome company second. For a long time The Exterminator has been one of those films known for its iconic poster/cover artwork. However, what could be passed off as action shlock, the film is actually a great flick and shouldn’t be overlooked. Unfortunately, the only R1 release of this film was pretty meh. The transfer was decent but the features were lacking. Synapse will be correcting this in their Blu-Ray/DVD Combo coming out soon. Find out the date after the break.

The crows knew it from Day One: Berlin 2011 would be a—slightly—happier experience. Normally, when night began to fall, the crows descended upon the frost-bleak trees around Potsdamer Platz and cawcawed for hours, filling the silence of bad cinema, crushed hopes and now-for-real lost illusions with their woe-cum sorrowful sounding songs. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. The trees were black for birds. Every evening, starting around 5pm or 6pm, reliably—you could set your watch to them (if you take things easy, that is...). Yet, this time around, the crows were nowhere to be seen. Maybe it's true what a friend of TO1..., comrade Möller suggested: It looks as if the crows were trying to make Berlin their permanent home, become true city slickers, which necessitates certain changes of behavior; rings scientifically solid. Still, we couldn't shake off the feeling that they somehow sensed a thing or two,...

No horror collection is quite complete without a healthy dose of Synapse DVDs on the shelf, right? And now that the company has announced their long-awaited foray into the world of high definition, they've got some absolutely fantastic plans for Blu-ray. And while only one title in this three-fer of exploitation bliss really fits snugly beneath the horror banner, this bears repeating. It really does.
Our friends at Synapse Films told Fangoria to look for Scott Spiegel's slasher classic, Intruder on Blu-ray in 2011. No solid date has been given yet, but Michael Felsher's Red Shirt Pictures will be contributing some supplemental material to the release so you know it's going to be good stuff.
Perhaps even more exciting, however, is Synapse's acquisition of James Glickenhaus' revenge masterpiece The Exterminator! For those of you who haven't seen this unparalleled masterwork of sleaze - think Maniac meets Death Wish...

When Eric Roberts, dressed as Vince McMahon, summarizes the insecure-dictator-with-a-daughter-conspiring-against-him plot of The Expendables as "bad Shakespeare," he's just touching the tip of the iceberg: bad pacing, bad timing, bad greenscreens, bad ideas. And yet, and yet, and yet. The first thing you notice about The Expendables is what a disarmingly casual movie it is. Like some later Hawks, it feels like an excuse for the cast to hang out together and shoot the shit; it's a low-key El Dorado with James Glickenhaus' McBain taking the place of Rio Bravo. Some old friends put on an exhibition match; some will be faces, some will be heels, and after a day's filming they'll all go out for drinks. Everybody does their own thing: Sylvester Stallone turns himself into John Wayne, doing it all for a girl he knows he's too old for; Jason Statham reprises the killer-worrying-about-his-unsuspecting-girlfriend bit from Crank...
