One Night Only: Monica Barbaro & Callum Turner to Lead Will Gluck's New Comedy
Image
One Night Only has found its leading duo. The upcoming movie is set to be directed by Will Gluck, who recently struck box office gold with the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You, which grossed a whopping $220.3 million against its reported $25 million budget. The Anyone But You cast was led by Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.

A new duo is stepping into the leads for One Night Only, which was also written by Gluck, revising the original Black List script by Travis Braun. The tweaks he made are unknown, but the original storyline was a comedy tweak on The Purge where premarital sex is only legal for one day, leaving single people rushing to find partners.

Deadline reports that Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner will play the leads in One Night Only, which is in the works with Universal Pictures. They also report that the actors were both high on Gluck's...

Anyone But You Follow-Up Movie Trades Glen Powell for Monica Barbaro
Image
Will Gluck is returning to familiar territory for his Anyone But You follow-up movie. The filmmaker is set to direct a new romantic comedy for Universal Pictures, with stars from Top Gun: Maverick and Fantastic Beasts in the lead roles.

According to Deadline, Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner are attached to lead One Night Only. Gluck will direct the rom-com based on his rewrite of Travis Braun's 2024 Black List script. It's currently unclear if Gluck's rewrite has strayed from Braun's original draft, which followed two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal. Universal has already set an Aug. 7, 2026, release date for One Night Only, which suggests that this movie is being fast-tracked into production.

While he has directed family-friendly fare like the 2014 Annie remake and the two live-action/CG Peter Rabbit movies, Gluck is...

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner will have one night to do the deed in Will Gluck’s One Night Only
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carrie-Anne Moss in FUBAR (2023)
After turning heads with knock-out performances in Netflix’s Fubar and James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, Monica Barbaro is ready to take Callum Turner by the hand for Will Gluck’s One Night Only. Gluck helped revive the romantic-comedy genre in 2023 with Anyone but You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, and he’s hoping to continue the trend with his new film at Universal Pictures.

According to sources, Only Night Only will be released in theaters on August 7, 2026. Will Gluck will direct the film based on his rewrite of Travis Braun’s chart-topping Black List script. It is unknown if Gluck’s story version will deviate from Braun’s draft. However, we know Braun’s screenplay follows two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal. Say what? Is this The Purge of premarital sex?...

Braun’s story takes place in a world where premarital sex is only legal for one night every year, and follows two strangers who are racing to find someone to sleep with.

Gluck previously directed the box office hit “Anyone But You,” which stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. Gluck also led “Friends With Benefits,” “Easy A” and more beloved romantic comedies. He will produce through Olive Bridge Entertainment.

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner Cast in 'Anyone But You' Director's Next Romance Movie
Image
After making the highest-grossing live-action William Shakespeare adaptation of all time with his steamy flick Anyone But You starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, director Will Gluck is going back to what worked for his next film. He's landed yet another Top Gun: Maverick star, Monica Barbaro, alongside Masters of the Air alum Callum Turner to lead the new romantic feature One Night Only for Universal, per a new report by Deadline. The project comes at the end of a long search for Gluck's big follow-up to his $220.3 million success, which premiered back in 2023 and helped launch both its leads into new levels of superstardom. In addition to the hot new couple, it was also announced that the film will hit theaters in just under a year on August 7, 2026.

One Night Only is not another Shakespeare adaptation, but it is based on a script by Travis Braun that topped the 2024 Black List.

Jason Statham Gets Swept Away By Sydney Sweeney on Streaming Charts
Image
The Prime Video viewership charts have finally witnessed some action after several weeks. During this time, The Accountant 2 had become a fixture at the number one spot, with a couple of recent Jason Statham action vehicles — A Working Manand Wrath of Man — jostling for space some rungs below. Briefly, the tremendously-reviewed period epic The Promised Land, starring Mads Mikkelsen, made its presence felt. However, the list was overdue a rejig, which has now happened. The number one spot was recently taken over by Heads of State, with a word-of-mouth blockbuster from 2023 also rising up the ranks.

Starring John Cena, Idris Elba, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Heads of State has been the number one movie on Prime Video across the globe ever since its release last week. The Accountant 2 has been pushed to the second spot. But in third place is the Sydney Sweeneyand Glen Powell-led romantic comedy Anyone But You.

Glen Powell's $220 Million Sleeper Hit He Called "The Greatest Thing I Can Do As an Actor" is a Global Streaming Smash
Image
It turns out all you really need for a runaway rom-com hit in 2024 is Australia, Shakespeare, and a healthy dose of fan-fiction-level chemistry. Anyone But You, starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, has officially become a global streaming juggernaut — and it’s still climbing. The film, which Powell stated "makes people feel love and joy, which is the greatest thing you can do as an actor", currently sits at #5 on Prime Video and shows no signs of slowing down. This comes after a staggering $219 million box office haul worldwide from just a $25 million budget. Not bad for a romantic comedy in the age of superheroes and sequels.

The breakout success was no accident. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Powell was refreshingly candid about the “delightful manipulation” behind the movie’s rollout — namely, the internet-fuelled speculation that he and Sweeney were more than just co-stars. And they...

Prime Video Adds New Fantasy TV Show to Its Collection Only Weeks After Cancelling ‘The Wheel of Time’
Image
During the 2010s, one television show reigned supreme, and its impact was felt around the world. The fantasy genre made a splash on the global stage as HBO adapted George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire into the award-winning series, Game of Thrones. Since then, there has been a desire to bring even more fantastical worlds and monsters to life. HBO doubled down on Westeros, with spin-offs like House of the Dragon and others in the works. Netflix went for The Witcher and Shadow and Bone. Prime Video decided to explore the world written about in Robert Jordan's massive 14-book series, known as The Wheel of Time. Unfortunately, after three seasons, of which the third season was the most critically acclaimed, Prime Video decided to break the spinning wheel and cancel the show.

However, despite ending the adventures of Rand al'Thor (Josha Stradowski) and Moiraine Damodred...

"It's Not A No...": Anyone But You 2 Gets Intriguing Update From Sydney Sweeney
Image
Anyone But You 2 has gotten an update. The original movie, which was directed by Will Gluck and debuted in 2023, was a modernized adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing that followed resentful exes Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) pretending to be in a relationship while at a destination wedding. The Anyone But You box office had an inauspicious beginning when it debuted at No. 4 over Christmas weekend with a $6 million haul against its $25 million budget, but it became a sleeper hit and eventually ballooned to a total of $220 million worldwide.

The newest print edition of Empire magazine featured an interview with Sydney Sweeney, who called in from Barcelona while on a break from the ongoing production of Euphoria season 3. During their conversation, she addressed the status of development on Anyone But You 2, which has not yet been officially greenlit. Sweeney, who was an executive producer on the original movie,...

SXSW Review: The Threesome is an Ambitious, Flawed Rom-Com From Chad Hartigan
Image
A big swing and nearly a miss, Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome is not without its charms even as it can overstay its welcome. A rom-com that offers a more serious tone for characters either in a state of arrested development or a new kind of adulthood that defies labels, it has much in common with Hartigan’s previous films, which live and breathe as hangout movies. His latest, written by Ethan Ogilby, starts to wane as characters continue bantering over the predicament they find themselves in time and again, leading to an awkward balancing act.

The fatal flaw is that lead Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) is too generic––a recording engineer living in Little Rock, Arkansas who appears to be an all-around good guy made for flirty banter. He’s always had a thing for hip waitress Olivia (the always-spirited Zoey Deutch). Olivia is either a free spirit or someone...

One Night Only: Anyone But You director Will Gluck to helm a quirky comedy that sounds like The Purge for premarital sex
Image
Will Gluck, the director of the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell comedy Anyone But You, is spicing up cinemas with his next project, One Night Only. Universal Pictures snagged the rights to Gluck’s latest comedy, which boasts a Black List script from Travis Braun. In addition to directing One Night Only, Gluck will produce through his Olive Bridge Entertainment studio alongside Olive Bridge vice president Jacqueline Monetta.

After reading the synopsis, One Night Only reminds me of The Purge, but for sexy times. Let me explain. In One Night Only, “two strangers, a man, and a woman, scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal in their society.” Don’t make a “We live in a society joke,” Steve. You’ll never forgive yourself.

When Glen Powell Almost Died While Filming This Cliffside Scene With Sydney Sweeney
Image
Did Glen Powell risk his life while filming Anyone But You? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

While shooting a cliffside scene with co-star Sydney Sweeney, Powell had to frantically strip down—only to nearly take a deadly tumble. “Taking your clothes off on the side of a cliff in a hurry is not safe either,” Powell shared at the movie’s New York premiere. “Nobody talks about that safety issue on set, where I almost died falling off a cliff taking my pants off too fast. But it’s a really fun scene, so it was all worth it.”

The scene in question? An over-the-top moment where Sweeney’s character, Bea, pulls a large spider out of Powell’s shorts. “You just have to grip it and rip it on a scene like that,” Powell joked. “You know you’re not going to leave that filming day looking cool, so you just have to embrace it.

Location Managers Help L.A. Fire Victims Who’ve Lost Their Homes While ‘Locationland’ Series Documents What’s Been Saved
Image
In an interview with the new PBS SoCal digital series Locationland, location manager Danny Finn describes the kismet moment when he discovered that the house used for Freaky Friday in 2003 was still standing and still owned by the same woman. Even better, she was open to allowing it to be used again for Disney’s August 2025 release, Freakier Friday.

“I called and got an old, robotic answering machine, left a Hail Mary voicemail,” Finn recalled. “Two minutes later I got a call from an unknown number and this voice answered, ‘Hi. It’s Me. Yes, I still live here. Same house, new husband, all good.’ So we ended up shooting there, which was wonderful.”

Then, last week, everything changed.

“We’ve since confirmed that that house — along with every house on that block — was lost in the Palisades Fire,” he told Locationland.

In the midst of that life-altering tragedy, Finn...

From Alliances With Emily Henry and A24 to Splashy ‘BookTok’ Acquisitions, How Lyrical Media Is Writing a New Story in TV, Film and Even Gaming and Comics

Lyrical Media chief Alex Black got swarmed with “a million emails and messages” on the day it was announced his young production company was teaming with Ryder Picture Company on a film adaptation of Emily Henry’s best-selling 2024 rom-com “Funny Story,” screen-written by the author herself.

A big get for any studio, the deal was particularly noteworthy for a three-year-old company still establishing itself in Hollywood and going up against the old guard for top titles and talent.

“In the meeting, I think we were able to really pitch to Emily that we would be great partners on this project because of our understanding of the material and our ability to make independent movies — not necessarily indie movies — that allows us to just work more nimbly and do what’s best for the project,” Lyrical Media’s vice president of film and TV Natalie Sellers said. “Emily got really excited...

Cameron Diaz's 20 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Warning: This article discusses topics of suicide and terminal illnesses.

Cameron Diaz is a fabulously talented actress with a scope of incredible movies from her long-spanning career. Diaz’s acting kicks off with the hilarious Jim Carrey film The Mask, making her debut at just 21, but in recent years, she is best known for her performance in Will Gluck’s remake of Annie. Although she has retired from the silver screen before, she is still remembered and is an actress that many audiences hoped would return. Since her start in the ‘90s, Cameron Diaz’s net worth has soared from her most memorable roles.

Thankfully, Cameron Diaz’s movie comeback is finally happening. The actress is due to appear opposite Keanu Reeves in Apple TV’s Outcome, and she is once again lending her voice to Princess Fiona in the fifth installment of the Shrek franchise. While Diaz is generally prominent in romantic comedy movies,...

It was in 2014 that we last saw Cameron Diaz when she starred in Will Gluck’s Annie as the cruel and drunk Ms. Colleen Hannigan. And now, 10 years later, the Charlie’s Angels star returns with a loud bang in Back in Action, a film that truly marks Diaz’s comeback, literally and figuratively. The film also marks a reunion for Diaz and her co-star Jamie Foxx, who plays her on-screen partner-in-crime. The duo first shared the screen in 1999’s Any Given Sunday and later in 2014’s Annie.

Cameron Diaz On Her Return To Acting: ‘No More Romcoms, Only Momcoms’
Image
The last time Cameron Diaz graced our screens, the BAFTA nominee was singing up a storm and cussing out kids as the villainous Miss Hannigan in Will Gluck’s 2014 Annie remake. Now, after a ten-year hiatus from Hollywood, Diaz is gearing up to make her return to movies in aptly titled Netflix joint Back In Action. Assuredly not a remake of *that* early noughties Looney Tunes movie, this one is instead a spy comedy caper from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon that reunites Diaz with her Annie and Any Given Sunday co-star Jamie Foxx. This time out, the duo play Emily and Matt, a seemingly ordinary suburban couple whose past lives as elite CIA agents comes back to haunt them when their cover gets spectacularly blown.

For Diaz, who’s spent the last decade raising a family with former Good Charlotte guitarist husband Benji Madden, it was the Foxx factor that swung her cinematic comeback.

The Black List 2024 Scorecards: CAA & Untitled Entertainment Lead The Way In Mentions
Image
CAA and Untitled Entertainment had the most scripts in the 20th edition of The Black List, the annual compilation of Hollywood’s best-liked unproduced screenplays.

CAA scored 15 executive mentions, leading on the agency side for the fourth year in a row, with Untitled landing nine. Leading the pack with by far the most mentions, at 60, is Travis Braun’s One Night Only, about two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal. UTA and Echo Lake rep the scribe, who also topped the 2023 list with Bad Boy. Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge is on board to produce.

Untitled’s highest ranked script, at 38 mentions, is Natan Dotan’s Alignment, the hot AI-themed piece that Fifth Season recently secured in a seven-figure deal, with Makeready coming aboard to produce, as we were first to report. Securing 37 mentions, CAA...

Was Mila Kunis Close To Turning Down Friends With Benefits?
Image
Here’s how Mila Kunis accepted the Friends With Benefits role ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Well, after a dinner with director Will Gluck and co-star Justin Timberlake, they reworked it—and the rest is rom-com history. The Black Swan star admitted, “When I got the script, it was very dated, but I knew it made for a funny movie.” Talk about a formidable first impression. But Mila Kunis saw potential, so she sat down with Gluck and Timberlake to hash out the details.

The three of them realized they were on the same page over a meal (because the best ideas are born over food). “We were able to workshop it, rewrite the script, and tailor the characters to what we feel our generation is like now,” Kunis explained. And just like that, the film we know and love was born—funny, fresh, and cheeky.

What’s even more incredible? The...

Emma Stone's 4 Favorite Movies Of All Time
Image
Emma Stone might be in a whole bunch of your favorite movies — but what are her favorites?

In January 2024, Stone spoke to Letterboxd — the social media site centered around movies — about her "four favorites," a regular interview the outlet does with major Hollywood celebrities. After appearing visibly stressed by the prospect of only picking four movies, Stone responds that Charlie Chaplin's 1931 comedy "City Lights" is her all-time favorite movie. "I love 'Network,'" Stone continued, name-checking the 1976 dark comedy that won Best Picture at the 49th Academy Awards in 1977. "'Mikey and Nicky,' I just saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago," Stone raved, citing Elaine May's movie (also from 1976) about a mobster and his best friend (played by John Cassavetes and Peter Falk). "I love almost every Cassavetes movie — that one wasn't Cassavetes, he's just in it. It's obviously Elaine May, who's a genius,...

Cameron Diaz Explains Why Stepping Away From Acting In 2014 Was “Something I Had To Do”
Image
With an upcoming return to the screen next year, Cameron Diaz is opening up about her decade-long hiatus from acting.

The four-time Golden Globe nominee recently explained why she took an extensive break from Hollywood following her last role as Miss Hannigan in the 2014 Will Gluck-helmed update of Annie.

“For me, it was just something I had to do,” she said at Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Summit. “It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else. I didn’t. Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have. So, I think it really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.

Sandra Bullock on Why Rom-Coms are Dying Despite Sydney Sweeney’s Best Efforts: ‘Women got relegated to the arm-piece’
Image
Ah, rom-coms! Who could forget those, silly little romances that made our hearts flutter? The ’90s and early 2000s were pure magic for love stories, they really don’t make them like that anymore! Fast forward to the 2010s, and it feels like the genre has taken a nosedive. But why? Sandra Bullock recently spilled the tea on why classic rom-coms seem to have gone Mia.

Glen Powell: ‘Nothing Makes Me Happier’ Than Going to Movie Theaters
Image
Step aside Tom Cruise, there may be a new savior of cinema: Glen Powell.

The “Twisters” actor, who is a certified student of Cruise’s movie star status after the duo starred in “Top Gun: Maverick” together, recently took to social media to voice his love of theatergoing and thank “Twisters” fans. The quasi-sequel reimagining of the ’80s disaster film surpassed box office predictions to become a theatrical hit.

“When I was a kid, during the summer I begged my parents to stay in the movie theater all day. Not just cause it had the best air conditioning in Texas, but because summer movies were designed to give you your money’s worth,” Powell captioned. “And I always got to share that cinematic experience with a theater full of people who were on the same ride with me and left with the same rush. So seeing the universal response to...

‘Anyone but You’ Director Will Gluck: It Was a ‘Battle’ to Get a Theatrical Release
Image
According to director Will Gluck, studios wanted anything but “Anyone but You” in theaters. Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that while he received numerous streaming offers for the original rom-com starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, he had to “convince” studios to even entertain a theatrical release. Thankfully, Gluck’s longtime partnership with Columbia led to the film opening in theaters. The rest is history — and profit.

“It was a little bit of a battle to convince everybody,” Gluck said. “I just had to explain how good the people in the movie are and how impactful a theatrical experience could be.”

Gluck previously directed adaptations of “Annie” and “Peter Rabbit” for Columbia. He also helmed several projects for Columbia’s sister label Screen Gems, including the beloved “Easy A.”

“Anyone but You” went on to gross $88 million domestically against a $25 million budget. The film earned $220.2 million at the worldwide box office.

How Great Movies Get Made at Columbia: A Directors’ Tell-All

Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Ang Lee

Ang Lee was pulling his hair out. He was in preproduction in China on his ambitious martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when a silent investor pulled out. “It was the toughest movie I’d ever tried to make,” recalls Lee, who thought it was all over. But Columbia came to the rescue, thanks to a new initiative to assist local-language filmmaking in foreign markets. Gareth Wigan, a widely respected Sony exec, became involved, as did Barbara Robinson, who lived in Hong Kong and headed up Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, and was asked to meet with Lee in Taiwan. A coalition came together, including Columbia, China Film Co-Production Corp., Good Machine International, Edko Films and Zoom Hunt Productions. Michael Barker and Tom Bernard’s Sony Pictures Classics signed on to distribute Crouching Tiger domestically, while Columbia International handled international territories...

This Comedy With 85% On Rt That Just Hit Netflix Is A Must Watch After Last Year's $220M Hit
Image
Easy A, one of the best comedies of the 2010s, is now on Netflix. Easy A is a perfect companion to Anyone But You thanks to their similarities and connections. Despite their similarities, Easy A is a better movie than Anyone But You.

Netflixs catalog of movies continues to expand every week, and its now housing one of the most successful comedies from the 2010s, which is a must-watch after one of 2023s biggest box office hits. After a couple of rough years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2023 was a great year for cinema, with huge box office successes like Barbie and Oppenheimer, and others that became surprise hits, as was the case for Anyone But You. Loosely based on William Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing, Anyone But You introduced the audience to Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell).

Easy A Cast & Character Guide
Image
Academy Award winner Emma Stone stars as Olive Penderghast in Easy A. Easy A marks Amanda Bynes' final film role. Other Easy A cast members include Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Lisa Kudrow, and more.

Easy A is one of the quintessential rom-coms of the 2010s, partly due to its all-star cast, which includes a two-time Academy Award-winning actress and a handful of Emmy Award-winning performers. The 2010 teen romantic comedy, directed by Will Gluck and written by Bert V. Royal, is partially inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's renowned 1850 novel The Scarlet Letter as it depicts a teenager, played by Emma Stone, who becomes known as the school's resident tramp. Similar to Hester in The Scarlet Letter, Easy A's protagonist dons a scarlet "A" on her clothing to embrace her perceived identity.

Emma Stone was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her...

Glen Powells $220M Rom-Com Fulfills The Secret Emma Stone Movie Trilogy You May Not Have Known About
Image
Anyone But You references director Will Gluck's previous rom-com, Easy A. Emma Stone's character Olive Penderghast features in three of Gluck's rom-coms - Easy A, Friends with Benefits, and Anyone But You. Stone's involvement in Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things may have prevented her from having a cameo in Anyone But You like she had in Friends with Benefits.

Anyone But You fulfills a covert rom-com trilogy by sneaking in a subtle reference to a character Emma Stone played early in her career. The popular romance film is, in fact, chock-full of references, most being towards Shakespeare's 16th-century play "Much Ado About Nothing," from which Anyone But You is loosely inspired. Anyone But You's rough remake of the comedic play features Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as Beatrice and Ben, respectively, two rivaling singles who pretend to be in a relationship to appease their loved ones and stick it to their exes.

Cinema is in Danger? Movies Are Failing So Bad at Box Office That Even Brie Larson’s The Marvels Could Have Been the 5th Highest Grossing Movie in 2024
Image
Can you look back at the film industry without a sense of awe at its resilience and adaptability? It’s no secret that the past couple of years have served as the ultimate litmus test for Hollywood, emerging from a period that could only be described as its trial by fire. Following the pandemic, Hollywood attempted to revert to its pre-covid ways, albeit with varying degrees of financial and critical success.

In a way, 2021 and 2022 were considered ‘trial years’, when Covid remained a major issue for the business, and movie failures could be attributed to its impact on drawing audiences into physical theaters. But in 2023, things were different. Hollywood was able to assess adaptability and durability in a post-covid environment.

While it’s tricky to encapsulate the rollercoaster ride of an entire industry within a year’s frame, the vibes emanating from Tinseltown by the end of 2023 mixed heady optimism with cautious introspection.

Glen Powell Reveals Big Reason Anyone But You Had to Release in Theaters: 'We Had Offers From Every Streamer'
Image
Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney passed on streaming offers for Anyone But You to preserve its cultural impact. The rom-com initially seemed like it could be a misfire but eventually became a box office hit. Powell and Sweeney focused on chemistry both on and off-screen to create buzz and make the movie a must-see event.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney's rom-com Anyone But You had many offers to go direct to streaming, but Powell believed that the film's "cultural impact" would be lost. It's a sub-genre that was once potent at the box office but has subsided in recent years with most of them heading to streaming services. That was almost the case with their R-rated romp but both stars knew it wouldn't have the same impact on those platforms.

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Sony’s Tom Rothman On How Movies Endure, Charles Finch Throws Swish Soiree Honoring Columbia Pictures & Josie Rourke Gives Voice To The Irish
Image
Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.

Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.

They hate each other, but as we all know, that’s often a prelude on the road to love both in real and reel life.
