Image
Christopher Nolan is known for crafting cinematic epics, often within the world of science fiction. From Inception to Interstellar, Nolan dabbles in genre to create his deeply affecting stories that have. But did you know that Nolan once made a horror short film titled Tarantella? In fact, according to IMDb, it’s the first film Nolan ever made. The film has been lost for 32 years, but just a few days ago, The Great Cinema uploaded the film to their YouTube channel, finally giving Nolan fans a glimpse into the auteur’s young brain.

At just under five minutes long, the 1989 short film follows a young man experiencing nightmares about big spiders and demons. It’s rather surreal in its editing and cinematography, and serves as a fascinating precursor to one of Nolan’s first feature films, Memento, which was released in 2000. Tarantella feels like a young Nolan working through the...

Matthew McConaughey thought he had the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic. He walked out of his audition with Kate Winslet feeling confident. The energy was all high-fives and back pats. McConaughey even called his agent, convinced it was happening. But then… nothing.

Pictures; & Amblin Entertainment Copyright Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment When actors sign on for a massive, visual-effects-heavy summer blockbuster, they usually just step into their character’s shoes and trust the magic of CGI to fill in the blanks. But Daisy Edgar-Jones, who played a meteorologist and former storm chaser in the box office smash Twisters, took her preparation to a whole new level. Instead of simply learning her lines and showing up on set, Edgar-Jones went all in, immersing herself in the world of weather science. She even attended “Weather Bootcamp” and teamed up with real-life meteorologists and storm chasers to nail the essence of her character. And she absolutely loved it. Beverly Hills Cop Series Was Casualty of Exec ‘Pissing Contest,’ Casting Issues, Says Director Barry Sonnenfeld
Image
A variety of factors — including a “pissing contest” between CBS CEO Les Moonves and a rival exec — led to the arrested development of CBS Beverly Hills Cop TV series back in 2013, director Barry Sonnenfeld detailed in a recent SlashFilm podcast.

Penned by the prolific Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Terriers) and directed by Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), the Beverly Hills Cop pilot starred Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) as Aaron Foley, a transplanted Detroit police officer now fighting crime in tony Beverly Hills, all the while trying to escape the shadow of his infamous, tailpipe-banana-ing dad (Eddie Murphy of the Cop...

“I don’t agree with the idea”: Christopher Nolan Will Never Agree With the One Criticism About Dunkirk That He Claims Was Deliberate on His Part
Image
The use of sound in cinema has been a delicate instrument of storytelling, for generations. However, in the modern world of filmmaking, where directors have often let sound fade into the background, Christopher Nolan challenged the conventional, and emerged with a profound sense of scale, noise, and music, that helped redefine audiences’ experience of a film.

Unfortunately, despite his audacious take on transforming the auditory landscape into a visceral force, Christopher Nolan often found himself and his films on the brink of criticism. Nolan’s World War II drama Dunkirk, which immersed viewers in the harrowing reality of war through a groundbreaking sound design, happens to be a striking example where the filmmaker faced criticism for his auditory revolution.

Critics and Fans Slammed Dunkirk and Interstellar for its Soundscape

‘Twisters’: Visuals Triumph Over Substance
Sasha Lane
(from left) Lily (Sasha Lane) and Tyler (Glen Powell), in Twisters directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Photo Credit; Melinda Sue Gordon Copyright Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures & Amblin Entertainment Twisters, the much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Twister, fails to recapture the magic of its predecessor. Despite boasting impressive visuals and a talented cast, the film disappoints with a lackluster plot, one-dimensional characters, and cringeworthy dialogue. The special effects depicting the force of tornadoes are truly impressive. They start to feel repetitive and take away, from the storyline. The characters, such as Glen Powell’s storm chaser and the duo played by Daisy Edgar Jones and Anthony Ramos seem a bit shallow. Fail to connect on an emotional level. The storyline seems like a recycled version of typical disaster movie clichés, offering nothing groundbreaking for the genre. The humor feels forced and awkward. The pacing of the film is inconsistent, leaving viewers feeling unsatisfied and disengaged.

Oscars 2024 Winners and Awards Show Recap

Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic job with the 2024 Oscars opening monologue, touching briefly on politics but mostly focusing the jokes around this year’s nominees. Kimmel called out Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub, this year’s Oppenheimer nomination being a new “high” in Robert Downey Jr’s career, and compared Emma Stone playing an adult woman with the brain of a child to the woman who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union address. Kimmel’s monologue ended with a standing ovation as he brought Teamsters & IATSE members onto the stage, thanking them for standing with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA during last year’s strikes.

The 2024 Oscars was fast-moving, fun, and easily one of the best Oscar broadcasts in years. Highlights of the ceremony included a naked John Cena,...

Christopher Nolan Would Love to Make a Horror Movie, if He Can Find a ‘Really Exceptional Idea’
Image
All eyes are on what Christopher Nolan is going to do next…beyond probably winning his first Oscar.

The world is Nolan’s oyster after his 12th feature-length film “Oppenheimer” was nominated for 13 Academy Awards. “Oppenheimer” is the frontrunner for Best Picture and Nolan is for Best Director.

You know what might make a great movie for lucky 13? A horror flick. Nolan is open to the idea. Asked at a British Film Institute panel discussion in London on February 15 if he would ever consider making a horror movie, Nolan said he loves playing with genre and would do so if he stumbled across a “really exceptional idea.”

“‘Oppenheimer‘ has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter,” Nolan said (via Variety). “I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices. It really is about a visceral response to things,...

Christopher Nolan Tells Us How His ‘Oppenheimer’ Used Genre Expectations to Do Something Radical
Image
Christopher Nolan’s screenplay for “Oppenheimer” is dense, 180 pages, and a terrific read. Adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “American Prometheus,” the filmmaker found a conflicted hero in brilliant theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer, a Salieri antagonist in political operative Admiral Lewis Strauss, and a courtroom drama for each of them.

Nolan and I spoke over the phone about the writing of “Oppenheimer,” which is nominated for Adapted Screenplay. It’s one of the film’s 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey, Jr. as Strauss.

The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Anne Thompson: From “Inception” on, you have preferred to write scripts on spec and present them to potential investors as a finished whole. When you gave...

Image
It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.

Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.

At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”

“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

More films were entered, making the selection process particularly tough for our voting members. The films and talented people nominated represent some of the most talked about films of the year,...

Leonardo DiCaprio Made Things Easy For ‘Killers’ Co-Star Lily Gladstone
Lily Gladstone
Photo Credit: Melinda Sue Gordon As if getting her first leading role in a film wasn’t enough to give Lily Gladstone a bit of anxiety, she learned that her character would be married to six-time Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio, giving them plenty of scenes together. Gladstone spoke about (Before SAG/AFTRA Strike) how she was nervous about working with DiCaprio, but that her nerves were calmed significantly once she got to know him on the Killers of the Flower Moon set. A Deeper Look at ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ by Martin Scorsese
Image
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, serves as a cinematic beacon, illuminating the dark and often neglected chapter of American history involving the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. The film, based on David Grann‘s nonfiction bestseller, not only unravels a chilling tale of greed and racial injustice but also brings to light the contemporary challenges of preserving historical truth.

Related: 9 Best Film Directors and Their Signature Styles

In the early 1920s, the Osage Nation found themselves in a paradox of prosperity and peril. The discovery of vast oil deposits underneath their lands made them among the wealthiest people per capita in the world. However, this newfound wealth attracted malevolent forces, resulting in the tragic Osage Reign of Terror. White settlers, corrupted by greed, systematically murdered members of the Osage Nation to seize their fortunes. Far from being a protective entity, the U.S. government compounded this...

Oppenheimer Technical Review: Brilliant Sound Design Combined With Extreme IMAX Closeups
Image
So we watched Oppenheimer on IMAX Laser. After writing a vast amount of articles dealing with the cinematography aspects of the film, we didn’t imagine how great the sound is. Indeed, the sound is brilliant and layered by the outstanding score composed by Ludwig Göransson. That was combined extremely well with the IMAX closeups.

The Lenses Behind Oppenheimer: Modified Panavision and an IMAX Snorkel Lens First drama shot on IMAX

Oppenheimer is not an action movie, but an epic thriller. It’s the first drama shot on IMAX film cameras. As we wrote before, Director of Photography Hoyte van Hoytema has implemented very simple and accurate cinematography techniques, focusing on character’s faces, and maneuvering between color and B&w sequences. As mentioned before, Kodak developed the first B&W IMAX film stock for the movie. There’s a solid emphasis on the certain part of the faces,...

Here’s How August Box Office Can Take This Summer to $4 Billion
Image
Domestic box office could be down a third from July. If so, that’s really good news.

Fueled by “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) and “Oppenheimer” (Universal), July’s total of about $1.36 billion came just short for our absolute best-case scenario of $1.4 billion. That beats last July by about 230 million for the biggest signal to date that theaters are more than viable: Not only can they throw off impressive grosses, but they’re still capable of driving the cultural conversation.

Still, what a strange July. Our preview suggested that the possibility that the gross could be this high — however, no one could have predicted that “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount) wouldn’t be in the top three.

“Oppenheimer”Melinda Sue Gordon

However, the top three are “Barbie” ($351 million), “Oppenheimer” ($175 million), and Angel Studio’s “Sound of Freedom” ($149 million). “Mission” is in fourth place at $141 million. There remains some minor...

Oppenheimer Changed the World, but Never His Style
Image
For costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, “Oppenheimer” isn’t a biopic of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Nor is it a period piece about the Manhattan Project and the unsteady aftermath of an American political class grappling with who gets to be responsible for the power to destroy the world. The Christopher Nolan film is a portrait — and one she found to be remarkably consistent over the course of the scientist’s life.

The very structure of the film implies that Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) was always the man haunted by the building blocks of our universe, always the man who would reach out and try to touch the fire burning at the center of creation. Mirojnick, accordingly, reflected that consistency in how she chose to dress Oppenheimer throughout the film.

“Oppenheimer never changed his silhouette from the time he began at Berkeley through the decades. That was a very, very important note to zero in on,...

Margot Robbie Was Right: ‘Barbie’ Will Be a Billion-Dollar Movie
Image
When pitching “Barbie” to Warner Bros. executives, producer and star Margot Robbie laid it out: Universal has dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg, Wbd could have Barbie and Greta Gerwig. As she told Collider, “And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, Ok?!”

This is a woman who knows the future. Based on estimates for Tuesday’s grosses, Gerwig’s film added $26 million to its domestic take this week. The second weekend will be vital to narrow the guess, but the domestic range could be anywhere from $500 million-$800 million. With over $400 million in worldwide in less than a week, a $1 billion total theatrical take seems increasingly likely.

“Oppenheimer” should achieve about half of that. It grossed a little over $12.0 million on Monday and Tuesday. A range for the domestic estimate is $250 million-$400 million.

The weekday...

The Lenses Behind Oppenheimer: Modified Panavision and an IMAX Snorkel Lens
Image
It appears that Oppenheimer was shot on specially modified fast Panavision Sphero and System 65 lenses. Even more interestingly, a dedicated snorkel lens was made for the IMAX cameras, to capture extreme macro shots of some ultra-intriguing scientific stuff.

Now everybody knows that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was shot with unconventional methods by Director of Photography Hoyte van Hoytema. The IMAX film cameras were used to capture objects with minimal (to zero – as stated by Nolan) CGI and VFX layers. Indeed, as mentioned by Hoytema before the release of the movie, there was a particular emphasis on capturing actors’ faces, amplified by IMAX Mkiv, and IMAX Msm 9802 cameras, bringing this mighty 18K resolution of enhanced motions and dramaturgy.

Review: ‘Oppenheimer’ Starring Cillian Murphy
Image
Cillian Murphy is J. Robert Oppenheimer in ‘Oppenheimer’ (Photo Credit by Melinda Sue Gordon © Universal Pictures)

Five-time Oscar nominee Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, focuses on the race to create the ultimate weapon to end World War II and bring the soldiers home. The movie delves into the life of Robert Oppenheimer, who is widely regarded as “The Father of the Atomic Bomb.”

The film begins with Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, depicted as a brilliant but socially awkward man who attends prestigious colleges in Europe and is light years ahead of all his professors. Robert attends a communist party meeting where he meets Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), a known communist. The two begin a tumultuous relationship marked by both passion and conflict.

It’s while Oppenheimer’s running the quantum physics department at the University of California, Berkeley, that the military starts eyeing him for a special project.

‘Oppenheimer’ Special 5 Minute Clip Unveils New Footage
Image
Editor Jennifer Lame put together this five-minute video from Oppenheimer, written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy. The video features new scenes from the R-rated thriller, which is going head-to-head in theaters against Barbie in a matchup referred to as “Barbenheimer.” Who will win? Moviegoers who love being emersed in big productions on the largest screeners possible.

Cillian Murphy reunites with director Nolan to star as J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. Murphy previously worked with Nolan on 2005’s Batman Begins as Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow and put in a cameo in 2008’s The Dark Knight. In 2010’s Inception, Murphy played Robert Fischer, heir to the energy conglomerate Fischer Morrow. And in 2017’s Dunkirk, Murphy played a Royal Navy soldier. Oppenheimer marks his first starring role in a Nolan film.

“What I wanted to do was take the audience into the mind and the experience...

Christopher Nolan Breaks Down The Best Ways To Watch A Movie, Ahead Of His ‘Oppenheimer’ Release
Image
It’s no secret that Christopher Nolan made “ Oppenheimer ” to be seen on the big screen. But not all big screens are created equal.

That’s part of the reason why Universal Pictures has made “Oppenheimer” tickets available early for over a thousand “premium large format” (or Plf) screens, with options including IMAX 70mm, 70mm, IMAX digital, 35mm, Dolby Cinema and more.

Knowing that even those words can get overwhelming and technical, Nolan went a step further: In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, he offered a guide to his favorite formats, explaining why it matters and even where he likes to sit so that audiences don’t feel like they need a film school degree (or one in theoretical physics) before settling on a theater.

“You rarely get the chance to really talk to moviegoers directly about why you love a particular format and why if they can...

The IMAX Filmmaker’s Guide
Image
An educational gem was discovered in the World Wide Web. We found The 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual written in 1999. However, many of its topics are super relevant today and essential for those who are keen to shoot with IMAX cameras. Read this before diving into the 15/70 ultra-complicated adventure.

Imac camera. BTS of Dunkirk. Source: IMAX Expanding IMAX’s options

The manual was published for those who dare to shoot the mighty 15/70 format. As stated back in 1999 by IMAX: “Each year, IMAX Corp. receives numerous inquiries from producers and directors who are experienced in 35mm or video production, and who are now interested in producing a 15/70 project. They’re usually attracted by the extraordinary image quality that IMAX technology affords and perhaps have a project in mind they believe would both succeed artistically and appeal to the 15/70 exhibition network”. Please note that this statement was written in 1999. From then, filmmakers have much...
