Depeche Mode completed the late-night trifecta Friday as the band appeared on The Tonight Show to perform their Memento Mori track “Wagging Tongue.”
Since announcing their latest album just over a year ago, Depeche Mode first played then-new single “Ghosts Again” on The Late Show in February, and then played that song again on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March. On Friday, a night before their Madison Square Garden gig in New York, Depeche Mode finished out the 11 p.m.-hour circuit with a visit to Jimmy Fallon’s show.

Priscilla Presley’s honesty regarding her life with Elvis Presley in her biography titled Elvis and Me stunned longtime fans of the King of Rock and Roll. The 1985 book depicted Priscilla’s life with the entertainer with candor and grace. It also inspired its readers to interpret Priscilla’s message in their way, including the members of a wildly popular Synthpop band, who based one of their biggest hits off the book’s contents.
Which band interpreted Priscilla Presley’s words into a hit 1989 song?
The band Depeche Mode found lots of inspiration in Priscilla Presley’s words within the pages of Elvis and Me so much so that Martin Gore wrote the song “Personal Jesus” about his interpretation of Priscilla and Elvis’ relationship.
Depeche Mode member Dave Ganan shared his thoughts regarding the inspiration behind the song with Entertainment Weekly: “I do think that particular phrase was inspired by something Martin read in [Priscilla’s] book,...

Depeche Mode, the post-synth-pop group that made sensual broodiness a part of the mainstream, have returned with a new album titled Memento Mori. You can stream it below.
Memento Mori, their first album in five years, is also their official return after the loss of founding member Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022. Their 15th record and much like many others of the last few years, Memento Mori is rooted in the unexpectedly free time the pandemic granted. The loneliness it bred thematically strings the tracks together, along with some more characteristically defining tropes of the group, like the binary between depuration and delight, and delusive devotion. Production by James Ford and Marta Salogni was key in communicating such rich yet glum atmospheres.
In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1, Dave Gahan touched on how minimalism was a part of the group’s approach to the new album. “Some of...

As Depeche Mode ready themselves for a North American tour in support of their new album, Memento Mori (out Friday), they stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the album’s lead single, “Ghosts Again.” Martin Gore played the song’s melancholy melody on a hollow body guitar until singer Dave Gahan, dressed in a sparkly blazer and with glitter around his eyes, started crooning the song’s lyrics all leading up to the chorus, “We’ll be ghosts again.” Drummer Christian Eigner gave some added swing to the song’s rhythm,...

Depeche Mode have always danced with death. Listen to, say, 1990’s “Enjoy the Silence” and you’ll detect a dark, simmering nihilism eager to remind us that we all die eventually. Even their most lustful tracks are accompanied by an urgency that borders on frantic, as though time might run out before the chance for one last bonk.
Memento Mori, the band’s 15th album, is unique because the inevitable has, in fact, happened – only much sooner than anyone could have predicted. The sudden death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, aged 60, last year means the band are now a duo. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have been left to process the stark reality of what has always captivated their music.
The grief on the record is deeply felt, but perhaps more striking is its sense of resolve. “Soul With Me” is a magnificent ode to ageing: “I see the beauty/ As...

In “Ghosts Again,” one of many introspective moments on Depeche Mode’s 15th full-length, Memento Mori, Dave Gahan croons, “Time is fleeting.” This is not a new revelation, but the tranquility in his voice feels fresh. More than four decades have passed since the group formed as a quartet of mostly teens eager to immerse themselves in the nascent synth-pop culture with party anthems like “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Now, with only Gahan and Martin Gore left in the lineup following the death last year of keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher,...

Depeche Mode, the pioneering ‘80s U.K. technopop band, has long had a strong following in Los Angeles — thanks to their exposure on local alternative stalwart Kroq — and now they’re proving a favorite of film and TV creative executives.
The group, consisting of co-founders Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan after the death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher in May 2022, is on a roll following its 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were introduced by Charlize Theron, who called them “the soundtrack of my life.”
Depeche Mode’s new Mute/Columbia Records album, “Memento Mori,” comes out March 24, their first since 2017’s “Spirit” and 15th overall, which will be followed by a year-long tour that launches March 23 in Sacramento and includes a show at L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28 and four concluding area shows in December, two apiece at Kia and Crypto.com Arena.

Depeche Mode served as the musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night. The new wave icons performed their latest single “Ghosts Again,” a cut from their upcoming album, Memento Mori.
“Ghosts Again” carries an especially heavy weight considering it’s been only a year and a half since the passing of Depeche Mode’s founding keyboardist Andy Fletcher in June 2022. Although the band will never be the same without him, their appearance on Colbert serves as a fitting tribute that proves remaining members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
Additionally, Depeche Mode also performed their classic song “Personal Jesus” for the Colbert audience, which they’ve now shared as a web exclusive. Watch them perform both songs below.

For the win! ‘The Last of Us,’ a big bet for HBO from creators Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) and Israeli-American Neil Druckman, drew fantastic numbers with its debut episode on Sunday night. If the name Neil Druckman is new to you, he’s not exactly a newcomer: he’s one of the most successful video game developers out there, and, indeed, this new series starring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Anna Torv is adapted from the blockbuster game of the same name. (Is this the first true television hit to emerge from the world of joysticks and consoles? How quickly we forget “Q*bert”!)
“The Last of Us” secured an audience of 4.7 million viewers across HBO’s linear network and the HBO Max streaming option, according to the network. This is the second-biggest debut in the last 13 years for the premium network, behind “House of the Dragon,” which, being a prequel...

Earlier this week, Depeche Mode announced news of their new album and their first live dates in five years.
Speaking to NME, Gahan admitted that the death of his bandmate was “the last thing we expected to happen”.
"I will forever wish I’d been a little bit kinder to Fletch as I go forward,” said Gahan reflecting on their relationship. “I will try to remember that with people I meet in the future too. I was always a bit of a d*** with him, he was always a bit of a d*** with me too.”

Founded by a quartet of synth-loving schoolmates from Essex, England, in 1980, Depeche Mode ascended to rock stardom with their boundary-pushing music.
Forty-two years later, founding members Martin Gore and Dave Gahan are about to embark on yet another sonic adventure with the release of their 15th studio album, Memento Mori, and a world tour that kicks off March 3. They will play a number of arenas in North America (including L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28) before heading to Europe, where they will headline a series of stadium shows.
Tragically, one of their founding members will not be along for the ride: Andy Fletcher died unexpectedly earlier this year. That the new album, titled well before Fletcher’s passing, is named for a Latin phrase about “the inevitability of death” adds unintended significance to the project.

During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode’s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori.
“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori.

Update, with cause of death Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, keyboard player and founding member of the British band Depeche Mode, died after suffering an aortic dissection while at home on May 26, the band said in a statement on Instagram today.
The cause of death was disclosed by the band at the request of Fletcher’s family, according to the post.

Here is the full statement from band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore:
We wanted to take a moment and acknowledge the outpouring of love for Andy that we’ve seen from all of you over the last few weeks. It’s incredible to see all of your photos, to read your words, and to see how much Andy meant to all of you. As you can imagine, it’s been a strange,...

Ahead of the release of his instrumental EP The Third Chimpanzee, Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore has revealed the new single “Howler.”

The members of Depeche Mode take a backseat in Anton Corbijn’s new concert film, “Depeche Mode: Spirits in the Forest.” Instead, the director shifts the spotlight to six fans, whose personal stories are woven throughout footage from the final night of band’s Global Spirit Tour in Berlin. Originally, the Dutch director simply wanted to create a document of his stage design for the tour, but the band felt that there needed to be a more impactful reason for the film and took inspiration from Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker 1989 endeavor on the group, “101.”
“I don’t like to watch concert films, myself,” Corbijn tells Variety. “[This] was initially very narcissistic for me. But it ended up being a great way to do it.”
The six fans, who come from all over the world — including Los Angeles, Romania and Mongolia —were selected from a massive pool of possible subjects.

Radiohead’s summer U.S. tour seems designed to prove a few self-evident truths. For one thing, In Rainbows remains their hands-down best album, though all votes for Kid A will be counted and “There There” is their peak song. For another thing: They’ve remembered how much fun it is to be the World’s Greatest Rock Band, to the point where their live show is a mad career-capping rush of exuberant energy. Their four-night run at New York’s Madison Square Garden last week was one for the ages.

Over Martin Gore's smoldering guitar, Andrew Fletcher's mechanized synths, singer Dave Gahan delivered the song with ominous flare. "You've been pissed on for too long/ Your rights abuse/ Your views refused," he sang.
"Where's the Revolution" will appear on Depeche Mode's upcoming album, Spirit, out March 17th. James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys) produced the record, which marks the band's first since 2013's Delta Machine.

U2, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire, Joy Division, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds isn’t a shabby list of names to be associated with in any capacity, and those are just a few of the bands that Anton Corbijn has directed iconic music videos for. The renowned photographer and filmmaker has always presented his subjects through a vision of his own, leading to a long history of famous images. His feature films haven’t been huge hits with the public though. So far Corbijn has only made two pictures – Control and The American – and, by their own accord, they’re not for everybody. The American even downright angered some filmgoers expecting a more action-heavy Clooney picture, but those aren’t the viewers Corbijn is aiming to please. The director is the subject of a new documentary, Anton Corbijn Inside Out, and for the digital release of the film, Corbijn...

A noted visual artist comes into focus in Anton Corbijn Inside Out.
The 2012 documentary Anton Corbijn Inside Out is a portrait of one of the world’s most respected and influential visual artists, who has worked as a photographer, a filmmaker and a video director.
The result of nearly four years of access to Anton Corbijn (the director of The American and countless, highly-regarded music videos) and his collaborators by filmmaker Klaartje Quirijns, the film examines Corbijn’s youth, career and creative endeavors in an attempt to uncover the inspirations that have led to a remarkable and wildly influential body of work over the past thirty years.
Beginning as a photographer, the Netherlands-born Anton Corbijn played a large part in building the images of such artists as Joy Division, U2, Björk, and Depeche Mode via his luxurious black-and-white photographic work. He also contributed...

Before he was an acclaimed filmmaker, Anton Corbijn was the king of cool, but you might not have known it. He started his career as a photographer, where he captured a diverse array of artists such as Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Miles Davis, Björk, Elvis Costello, Morrissey and more in iconic pictures. He then moved to music videos where again, his inventive eye made his name a brand, and he still dabbles in that world today, most recently helming "Reflektor" for Arcade Fire (and you can see his recently released director's cut of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" right here). But now, the camera is getting turned on Corbijn himself. He's the subject of the forthcoming documentary "Anton Corbijn Inside Out," and it's one that fans of his work will want to track down. Directed by Klaartje Quirijns, it's a film that tracks both his life and work,...

It is the ultimate goal of some, to have your your music known universally, but be able to pop down to the shop to get a pint of milk and some smokes without it turning into a major operation in avoiding detection, involving dodgy disguises and taking the “long way there”.
There aren’t many musicians out there that can genuinely claim to be relatively anonymous, but enjoy the satisfaction and wealth a hit record or five brings.
Allow us to introduce you to a few of these crafty musos who have managed to play it right, so that they can blend into the crowd.

Justin Timberlake's not-so-secret Myspace show at SXSW had many attendees of the 27-year-old South-by-Southwest music festival wondering if its indie-centric soul had finally been crushed -- as if Public Enemy performing inside a gigantic Doritos vending machine earlier in the week hadn't already done that.
But it takes more than a nation of nachos to hold Jt back.
If any other young soul singer fronting a 15-piece band had delivered the fiery performance that Timberlake did, it wouldn't have even been an issue. Certainly nobody was similarly slighting Prince, who also alighted in Austin on Saturday night to bring this year's SXSW to an all-star close. (Oh, plus Smashing Pumpkins performed a "secret" gig at a Red Bull party while P. Diddy was the special guest over at Fader Fort, following up Usher's surprise appearance with the Afghan Whigs the night before.)
So no, Timberlake didn't need SXSW to be "discovered,...

A Los Angeles radio station debuted Depeche Mode's "Heaven" a day earlier than expected, sending the new single over the airwaves Wednesday morning.
The new track is firmly in the band's wheelhouse, which makes sense given that songwriter Martin Gore said he wanted to return the group to the sound of its best years.
Update: The track's video has been released -- take a look above.
“Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern," Gore said in press materials announcing the band's upcoming album, "Delta Machine." "I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it."
Though a video is set to be released on Friday, the song's audio is currently only available at K-roq's website.

The band behind "People are People," "Personal Jesus" and "Blasphemous Rumors" is back for more. Depeche Mode will release their 13th studio album in March, according to a press release. A global tour will follow the album's release, launching in Tel Aviv and traversing Europe and North America.
Founding member Martin Gore says the as-yet untitled album "has a similar vibe to 'Violator' and 'Songs of Faith' and 'Devotion.'"
"I think the songs on the album are among some of the very best we've done," he added -- a strong endorsement given that Gore has written the vast majority of the group's tracks. Dave Gahan described the project as having a "very organic and direct feel."
"It's not a blues record, but it definitely has a soulful vibe," Gahan added. "During the recording process we really tried to get the elements of performing and the live show into the album more.

Gun violence isn't a laughing matter. And Simon Cowell was not amused when Depeche Mode's Martin Gore recently told Music Week that "somebody should shoot" the X Factor judge. Simon has now fired back at the musician on Twitter, lashing out at Gore for his comments. "I read Martin gore wants to shoot me," Simon tweeted Monday. "He is in depeche mode.
