It was a very quiet weekend at the box office as January 2025 is getting off to a mighty slow start. The entire first half of 2024 was pretty brutal, but at least January had hits like "The Beekeeper" and "Mean Girls" to help carry the load. No such breakouts have emerged yet this year, but hey, something has to top the charts even when we're looking at the ticket sales equivalent of tumbleweeds. Director Mel Gibson's new thriller "Flight Risk" was that film this past weekend, taking the crown with an estimated $12 million haul. With that, Gibson now has his first number one hit in nearly 20 years.

Any weekend in which a movie manages to take the top spot with $12 million is pretty rough, which we should state right up front. Setting that aside, Lionsgate gets to claim it has the number one movie in the country, albeit for a brief time.

Mel Gibson went almost a decade without directing a movie after his war drama "Hacksaw Ridge" hit theaters in 2016. The actor-filmmaker, whose other directorial credits include "Braveheart" and "Apocalypto," has now ended his dry spell with the release of his new movie "Flight Risk." It's a very minimalistic, contained thriller that takes place on a tiny plane and centers almost entirely on just three actors for the majority of its runtime. However, some familiar voices also pop up along the way, particularly for those who are fans of a certain classic CBS sitcom.

Gibson, it needs to be mentioned, is a controversial figure who has been accused of antisemitism, in addition to having a battery charge against his ex-wife, which is largely why he doesn't work as much as he once did. But he still does, indeed, get work in Hollywood these days, as evidenced by this thriller, which is being released by Lionsgate.

The action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg is Gibson’s first directorial effort since his World War II docudrama Hacksaw Ridge, so it’s quite the occasion. It remains unclear if Flight Risk has what it takes to climb to the top of the box office charts this weekend. Still, analysts say the movie could earn $9M-$11M, a fair chunk of change.

Mel Gibson returns to the director’s chair for the impressively economical single-location thriller Flight Risk. It’s undeniably trashy, thanks to an egregiously over-the-top performance by top-billed Mark Wahlberg, but it’s also surprisingly enjoyable.

In fairness, it’s not entirely a single-location thriller, as the film starts with fugitive mob accountant Winston (Topher Grace) being apprehended in his remote Alaska motel hide-out by Air Marshal Madolyn (Michelle Dockery), and offered a deal to testify against his boss in an ongoing trial. Winston takes the deal, and Madolyn charters a three-seater plane to fly him to New York, but her plan hits a snag when the pilot, Daryl (Mark Wahlberg) turns out to be a hired killer with orders to kill them both.

Given the fact that almost the entire...

It’s weird to find an animal outside of its natural habitat. A penguin floating around the International Space Station instead of waddling through the Antarctic. A kangaroo in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles instead of hopping across the Outback. A skunk in the White House instead of… actually, no, that one fits. His newest film, Flight Risk, sees him combining forces with Mark Wahlberg, who is finally taking a darker turn after decades of playing generic good guys. In fact, this anonymizing might turn out to be a good thing for Gibson. "Flight Risk" is a modest affair. It sports a downright frugal budget of $25 million, and is set almost entirely on board a small prop plane. There are only three on-screen actors for the bulk of the movie's mercifully brisk 91-minute runtime, and the concept is easy to get one's head around. In execution, it feels like a neophyte director's confident first turn. Perhaps shabby, but well-meaning, and only occasionally straining against its obviously limited means. 

Only this isn't a first-time director's film. This is a film by Mel Gibson, the once-respected Oscar darling and hitmaker, now ostracized for his many offensive public outbursts and unhealthy personal viewpoints. Gibson, as a director, has overseen multiple weighty, violent historical pictures, many of them impressively staged and visually astounding. After the scope of Braveheart, The Passion Of The Christ, Apocalypto and Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson is working on a smaller canvas for his sixth directorial feature. The kind of action thriller Hollywood is supposed not to make anymore, Flight Risk is a chamber piece, confined almost entirely to a single location — a rickety plane described as a “kite with seat belts”. It may not be particularly novel but it is well made, well performed by a cast who understand the assignment, and has enough twists, turns and tweaks to formula to keep it fresh. It also features the scary sight and sound of Mark Wahlberg warbling his way through New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’. Be warned.

It is an action suspense thriller set almost entirely on board a rickety small-prop plane, flying in a desperately dangerous situation through the Alaska wilderness. First-time feature screenwriter Jared Rosenberg had his script on the Black List of unproduced screenplays for four years before Gibson picked it up.

Lionsgate’s advertising campaign for “Flight Risk” credits its latest film to “the award-winning director of ‘Braveheart,’ ‘Apocalypto’ and ‘Hacksaw Ridge’,” which seems a circumspect way of recognizing Mel Gibson as its helmer. Unfortunately, the movie’s problem is not that it lacks Gibson’s name, but his personality as a filmmaker. Reminding audiences of those very good pictures sets expectations way, way too high ahead of watching this cheap-looking, shoddily-made, lifeless thriller.

Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk takes off under promising conditions for fans of no-frills action flicks. After tracking down sardonic mob accountant Winston (Topher Grace) in Alaska, dogged U.S. Marshal Madolyn (Michelle Dockery) must accompany him back to New York to testify against his high-profile gangster boss. Enter a vigorously gum-chewing Mark Wahlberg as Daryl, the local pilot who will be transporting them to Seattle in his small plane. Except that Daryl, with his too-enthusiastic, down-home chattiness and increasingly uncomfortable personal overtures, clearly has dubious intentions, setting the stage for an explosive situation at 30,000 feet above the Alaskan wilderness.

Hollywood history is littered with action films that begin as promising elevator pitches but ultimately devolve into forgettable slop by veering too far from their premises. Plenty of clever hooks have been squandered by messy second and third acts that felt the need to increase stakes and spectacle but ended up losing touch with the situation that piqued our interest in the first place. “Flight Risk” is no such film. Possibly the most January movie ever conceived, Mel Gibson’s latest directorial outing has always been bluntly honest about its value proposition for discerning moviegoers. You get to see a bald Mark Wahlberg impersonate a pilot to hijack a plane, forcing its two other passengers to fight him while simultaneously trying to figure out how to fly it in real time.

If that doesn’t sound exciting, you can just stop reading and feel confident in your decision to skip “Flight Risk.

Mel Gibson’s first directorial effort since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge finds the new ambassador to Hollywood working on a distinctly more intimate scale than usual. The inside of a small Cessna plane, to be precise, which is where most of the action of Flight Risk takes place. Depicting the harrowing aerial journey of a deputy U.S. Marshall, her mob-connected witness, and a pilot who turns out to be a hit man, Flight Risk manages to deliver some high-altitude thrills in its breathlessly paced 91 minutes. But its clunky dialogue, uneven performances and less-than-grade-a special effects ultimately make it the Spirit Airlines of airborne thrillers.

The screenplay by Jared Rosenberg is nothing if not efficient, quickly establishing its premise when Deputy Marshall Madolyn (Michelle Dockery) and other officers burst into the tacky Alaskan motel room where mob accountant Winston (Topher Grace) is hiding after making the mistake of skimming millions from his boss.
