The new film is reportedly set in Bakersfield, California, with Evans playing a cult leader, Qualley portraying a private investigator, and Plaza as a mystery woman.

Director Ethan Coen – collaborating with wife Tricia Cooke instead of brother Joel – delivers a disposable but not entirely unentertaining lesbian-centered crime caper comedy in Drive-Away Dolls. With its raunchy sex and vivid violence, the film is more an affectionate tribute to hard R drive-in B movies that more resembles something from the mind of Russ Meyer than anything resembling smart, Oscar-y movies like the Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men, Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Fargo, Blood Simple etc.
Drive-Away Dolls definitely retains the quirkiness of the Coen brand, but key inspirations this time were Meyers’ Motorpsycho, Bad Girls Go To Hell and even something really good like ’50s noir Kiss Me Deadly, with which it shares some plot details.
But “plot” doesn’t really matter much here. Coen and Cooke throw everything against the wall to see what sticks. If it makes narrative sense, it likely is an accident.

The Coen Brothers are about as legendary as it comes in the world of filmmaking, with unparalleled classics such as "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men" to their names. But that's as a duo. For the past several years, Joel and Ethan Coen have gone out on their own, with Joel making movies like "The Tragedy of Macbeth." Now, it's Ethan's turn to go solo with his latest, "Drive-Away Dolls." Can Ethan Coen's solo feature directorial debut help lift up the February box office? Or should we begin tempering expectations?
As it stands, the Focus Features film is looking at an opening weekend of anywhere between just $2 and $4 million (per Box Office Pro) -- an admittedly modest sum. It's also facing sneakily stiff competition from "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -- To the Hashira Training," with the latest entry in the anime franchise expected to top the charts with between $9 and $14 million.

The legendary sibling directing duo of Joel and Ethan Coen went their separate directorial ways after the 2018 film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and while there’s talk they’re going to be reuniting to make a horror movie, in the meantime we’ve gotten Joel’s first solo directing effort with The Tragedy of Macbeth, and we’ll be seeing Ethan’s first solo directing effort when Focus Features brings the road trip comedy caper Drive Away Dolls to theatres on February 23rd. Some critics have already had a chance to see the movie, and with two weeks to go until its wide release, the first reactions have started showing up online. We have gathered some of them together below.
First, we have a reaction from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray:

Things quickly go wrong when Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan look for a fresh start with an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee in the trailer for Ethan Coen — half of the acclaimed sibling partnership known simply as the Coen brothers — and Tricia Cooke’s comedy caper Drive-Away Dolls, which Focus Features released Friday.
It’s only when they hit the highway that the duo discover the trunk of their rental car has valuables of value to dangerous criminals. Now on the run, they cruise lesbian bars and encounter, among other obstacles, a mystery briefcase and an evil politician.

The Coen Brothers have made some terrific movies together, but nowadays, the two seem to be venturing out more on their own. As sad as this sounds, we already know that their departures have already resulted in some great work. Joel Coen's 2021 solo debut, "The Tragedy of Macbeth," is a criminally underrated Shakespearian drama that we will continue to say deserved better for years to come.
Now, after rumors of him stepping away from filmmaking altogether, Ethan Coen is gearing up for his own, single seat in the director's chair. Focus Features recently announced that his first solo project, the crime comedy "Drive-Away Dolls," will be released later this year. Coen, who co-wrote and co-produced the film alongside his wife and longtime editor Tricia Cooke, seems to be harkening back to his roots with this project, as seen in the film's official synopsis:

The film follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals.
It features an impressive cast that includes Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.
Coen, the Oscar-winning director and screenwriter of “Fargo” and “No Country for Old Men,” is making the film without his brother and frequent collaborator Joel Coen. It’s not their first time working on solo projects. Joel Coen adapted “The Tragedy of Macbeth” in 2021 with Denzel Washington and the director’s wife,...

Keke Palmer spoke tonight about her experience on Aziz Ansari’s feature directorial debut Being Mortal. Her comments to Deadline came three months after the film shut down production due to a complaint against star Bill Murray.
“I had a wonderful time filming,” Palmer began. “Aziz Ansari is one of the coolest people that I ever met. That was the coolest experience, but I don’t know anything more than that.”

Searchlight Pictures first announced Being Mortal in the spring. Seth Rogen was also cast in the adaptation of Atul Gawande’s nonfiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End.
While half of the shoot was completed by April, with the studio eyeing a 2023 release, it shuttered production indefinitely when a complaint of inappropriate behavior against Murray emerged.

“A little bit of horror, a little bit of comedy; I’m always going to try and give you a big show.” That’s how Oscar winning writer-director Jordan Peele described his storytelling sensibility to Deadline at the premiere of his latest, Nope.
As to whether he might venture into other genres or play with different tones he continued, “I will stay within this realm that I love which is, I think, the only way I know how to view the world and how to tell
stories at this point.

It’s a true spectacle in the sky.
Jordan Peele’s third film “Nope,” following his Oscar-winning 2018 directorial debut “Get Out” and 2019’s “Us,” finally seemed to reveal its plot in the latest trailer. After haunting teasers and much debate over what exactly “Nope” means, the summary of the film has been unveiled ahead of its July 22 theatrical release.
Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer star as brother-sister duo James and Jill Haywood, who run Hollywood’s only Black-owned horse ranch. Their great-great-great-grandfather was also the man in the iconic image of a jockey on a horse that made history in a 19th-century study of how to make images “move,” marking the start of motion pictures. The Haywoods look to venture into filmmaking themselves after James (Kaluuya) spots “something above the clouds,” and the siblings set out to sell footage of a UFO. The only issue? Universal Pictures released the final trailer for “Nope,” Jordan Peele’s third feature film. It teases much of the movie’s previously-unknown plot, in which Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya star as the duo behind a horse training ranch for Hollywood productions, who, thanks to the aliens hovering over their property, hatch a scheme to capture and sell the first authentic footage of UFOs. Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea, Keith David, Donna Mills, Andrew Patrick Ralston and Michael Wincott are also in the film.
“Nope” follows Peele’s two previous blockbuster horror films: “Get Out” — which won the Oscar in 2018 for original screenplay and also starred Kaluuya — and “Us,” his 2019 film that popularized the term “tether,” in reference to the cast’s performances as ordinary and demonic versions of their characters. Peele has used the horror genre to comment on social issues, namely racism and xenophobia, and he is...

‘Nope’ Trailer: Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer Have a Close Encounter in Jordan Peele’s New Thriller
Jordan Peele’s new nightmare is coming soon to a theater near you.
‘Twas the night before the Super Bowl that Universal Pictures suddenly dropped the first trailer for “Nope,” the upcoming third feature film from the acclaimed director behind “Get Out” and “Us.” The studio released the first extended look at the upcoming thriller early Sunday morning.
Similar to when “Us” was first announced, the plot of “Nope” has been largely kept under wraps up to this point. When the project was revealed in February 2021, the only information that was known was that Daniel Kaluuya, who received an Oscar nomination for his lead performance in “Get Out,” would reunite with Peele, and that Keke Palmer had been cast in a key role. Since then, new information has trickled out, with Steven Yeun joining the cast a month later, and Barbie Ferreira, Brandon Perea and Michael Wincott later rounding out the ensemble.

A tsunami of buzz and Oscar-telling indicators drop on Thursday, with the major guilds announcing award nominations. The Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and American Cinema Editors (Ace Eddies) all serve as critical barometers for the Academy Awards, especially in the race for best picture.
DGA has averaged four of their five nominees landing in the Oscars’ best director category, including last year with Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) getting bumped for Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”). The first-time directors’ category, with the exception of Jordan Peele for “Get Out” (2017), has gone on to get a nod at the Academy.
The PGA always provides some big blockbusters and Academy flare, which bodes well for either “No Time to Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The WGA has a lot of ineligibilities that won’t provide a strong enough indicator for the screenplay categories.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Carter Burwell’s Oscar-shortlisted score for The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is set for release tomorrow via Milan Records, as the film from director Joel Coen premieres globally on Apple TV+.
Coen’s take on William Shakespeare’s classic 17th century play Macbeth watches as Denzel Washington’s Scottish lord is convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland, subsequently conspiring to seize power with the help of his wife, Lady Macbeth (Frances McDormand).
It’s the latest project to emerge from a career-spanning partnership between Burwell and Coen, dating back to 1984, which has seen the former score almost all of the latter’s films including Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

I must have at least 7 home video releases of John Sturges’ classic, starting from VHS, but they’ve come up with a good reason to return: a 4K transfer with color and contrast grading that to me better represents the movie. The thrilling, not-too-violent escapades of Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, David McCallum, James Coburn, Charles Bronson & James Donald are no longer timed so that everything looks like a washed-out high noon: both the 4th of July and much of the mad-dash escape scramble are meant to take place near the crack of dawn. In this case ‘Much darker’ is much richer; faces don’t get blown out. And I do see more detail in the enhanced image. So here we go again, happily.

For the third consecutive year, Women In Film has released its awards-season ballot, recognizing all the women whose work behind the camera made this year’s biggest films possible.
As critics and guilds start voting and handing out awards, the Wif #VoteForWomen ballot seeks to shine a light on the women and nonbinary film professionals for consideration.
In a statement, Women In Film said, “Every year we see hundreds of women excelling at their roles as creative and craft leads on the set of films big and small, and we are too often dismayed by how few of them make it into the predominant discussions of who gets celebrated with nominations and awards — recognition which can lead to continued work and compensation.”
Notably, there are 27 women in the directing category, including last year’s best director winner Chloe Zhao, who helmed “Eternals.” Despite this number, Jane Campion is currently leading pundit polls,...

A24 and Apple Original Films play double duty on the William Shakespeare adaptation of “The Tragedy of Macbeth” from Joel Coen. With A24’s awards website launching, their entire roster is listed for industry guilds and voters to consider this awards season. The studio that brought Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” to a best picture win and made Yuh-Jung Youn the second Asian woman to win an acting Oscar last year with “Minari” has another potentially historic event on the awards horizon.

Exclusive: Apple Original Films has made a deal with A24 on distribution for the Joel Coen-directed The Tragedy of Macbeth, a film that stars Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. The plan is to release the film theatrically worldwide in the fourth quarter by A24, before its global launch on Apple TV+. Pic shapes up as an awards-season contender, with artists who’ve been there before: McDormand just won her third and fourth Oscars for Nomadland, Washington is a two-time Oscar winner and Coen also has four. Coen, who adapted from Shakespeare, makes his first solo directing outing, without brother Ethan.
Washington plays the title character, and McDormand plays Lady Macbeth. Surrounding them is a cast that includes Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Kathryn Hunter, Harry Melling and Brendan Gleeson. Coen reunites with frequent collaborators Bruno Delbonnel as Dp, costume designer Mary Zophres, and Carter Burwell with an original score.

Images from this picture were burned into our Boomer childhood brains … we actually sat still for almost three hours to watch it. John Sturges’ epic show is like a fine-tuned watch — its unbreakable story is populated by ideal characters that become instant heroes, just for acting like normal men that want free of confinement. It’s really about freedom — after two hours in the Pow compound, the fugitives set loose in the wide, green beauty of Germany might as well be escaping into a wonderland of light and space. In its own way this show made our parents’ wartime experience come alive — it’s The picture to interest kids in events of the past.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s Netflix six-parter The Ballad of Buster Scruggs took the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival last weekend, and this new trailer shows what the buzz was about.
“First time?” asks an about-to-be-hanged James Franco (at his glib and goofy best) to the doomed, sobbing prisoner next to him.
The Western anthology is a series of tales about the American frontier, each chapter offering a distinct story about the West. As one character says in the trailer, people love to be distracted with stories – “so long as people in the story are us, but not us.”

Rotterdam this year has offered one certifiable giant discovery in international cinema: German filmmaker Dominik Graf, revealed in a simultaneously introductory and interventionist retrospective programmed by Christoph Huber and Olaf Möller. An incredibly prolific filmmaker beginning in the late 1970s, Graf has interwoven his cinema into the fabric of the German television industry, producing a body of work ranging from television episodes, made-for-tv films, essay movies, documentaries, and a handful of films intended for the cinema.

Jt has been on the acting rise recently, and is starring in a lead role in Andrew Niccol's In Time opening this weekend. This may seem like an odd choice, but perhaps not, as he's being offered the role of another folk musician. The report says that Timberlake has been offered the role of Jim, a folk musician married to Jean, who will be played by Carey Mulligan. StudioCanal is co-financing, with Robert Graf (No Country...
