- Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as author of a Best Play nominee: in 1973 for "Butley" and in 1977 for "Otherwise Engaged."
- Author of the autobiographical "Smoking Diaries", third volume called "The Last Cigarette". He used to smoke up to 65 cigarettes a day.
- He was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the order of the British Empire) in the 2005 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to literature.

- He made his first foray into playwriting when he learned that the BBC wanted to make one of his short stories into a radio play, and that they would pay the scriptwriter more than they paid him for the story. He volunteered to adapt the story himself.
