He was diagnosed with heart failure in 2018 after he had felt rundown and unable to do the things that he used to do. He underwent a heart transplant in November 2020 at St. Paul's hospital in Vancouver.. He donated a gold medal he had won at the Transplant Games to the hospital that saved his life.

Became friends with Russell Crowe while they were filming Mystery, Alaska (1999) and subsequently helped provide background vocals for Gaslight, the CD Crowe produced with his band, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts.

Holds a BFA in theatre from the University of British Columbia.
