Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Homeland star Morena Baccarin has bagged the female lead in Fox’s Deadpool spinoff. The Firefly actress appeared last week on an early shortlist, and in the last seven days, she beat out fellow hopefuls Taylor Schilling, Crystal Reed, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Sarah Greene and Jessica De Gouw.
THR had no clarification on exactly who Baccarin will portray, but simply described her as a love interest for Ryan Reynolds’ scarred assassin. The Merc with a Mouth – as he’s affectionately referred to – will be joined on his first standalone flick by a strong, supporting cast. Alongside Baccarin, we’ll see Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller in the comedy sidekick role, Game Of Thrones‘ Ed Skrein as the film’s villain, and Haywire‘s Gina Carano as a member of the Morlocks, Angel Dust.

After much deliberation, not to mention the back and forth between studios, Deadpool is finally ready to leap onto the silver screen in exactly one year’s time for his first standalone feature. And to mark the occasion, star Ryan Reynolds has posted a teaser image of a costume prototype; specifically, a sneak peek at the titular vigilante’s mask.
Taking to his personal Twitter account, Reynolds posted the following update from the Vancouver set.
Sepia tone disguises the fact the mask is ballerina pink. It’s early. 365 sleeps early. #deadpool#prototypespic.twitter.com/PekFa2KS7S

Every time we get to remind you all that Deadpool is coming to town next February feels like a victory in and of itself. The promise of Ryan Reynolds bringing everyone's favorite violator of the Fourth Wall to the big screen is something that's been long awaited, and almost didn't happen. But we're past that point, as it's most definitely happening, and better still . it's happening pretty damned quickly. Which means it's time to find some playmates to enter the sandbox, particularly a female counterpart that can engage in ass kicking and name calling, which just might be fulfilled by one of the following actresses on the short list for the Deadpool movie: Morena Baccarin, Taylor Schilling, Crystal Reed, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Sarah Greene, and Jessica De Rouw. Deadline broke the short list of candidates that director Tim Miller and his team are vetting, and they're all pretty exciting prospects that...

I’ve been intrigued by Penny Dreadful but never gave it the time; perhaps now is a good time to catch up with a binge watch as the latest trailer for season 2 makes it even more appealing.
For those who don’t know about the show, it goes something like this: An erotically-charged, profoundly unsettling new saga, Penny Dreadful completely reinvents literature’s most iconic and terrifying characters. Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul — even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations.
The show stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway, Helen McCrory and Simon Russell Beale will also return and will be joined by Patti LuPone, Douglas Hodge, Sarah Green and Jonny Beauchamp.

Eerie, erotic and wholly engaging, Penny Dreadful was one of the best new shows of the year, and I’m impatiently counting down the days until the Victorian-set horror-drama returns for its second season. While Showtime has announced no premiere date as of yet, a brief new teaser, titled “A Curse and a Blessing,” has just surfaced online, promising a continuation of the gory thrills that made season 1 such a compelling watch.
Unfortunately, there’s not much to the clip, which finds haunted protagonist Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) vowing to use her unusually strong connection to the shadowy Demimonde in order to help others throughout London. Elsewhere, American werewolf Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) looks pensively off into the distance, tough-as-nails explorer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) looks sadly off to the side and scientist Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway)… really, you too, Victor?? There’s a lot of contemplation going on here.

Just ahead of kicking off production, The Weinstein Company has opted to change the title of Bradley Cooper’s upcoming drama from The Chef to Adam Jones, evidently to avoid confusion with Jon Favreau’s Chef, about a food truck owner struggling to stay afloat in his personal and professional lives.
