What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Brightburn, the 2019 superhero horror film produced by James Gunn, is getting a sequel. The film, which put a dark twist on Superman’s origin story, followed a young boy named Brandon who crash-landed on Earth from another planet and discovered he had superpowers. However, instead of using them for good, he became a violent and murderous supervillain.
The film was a modest success at the box office, earning $32 million on a small budget, and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. However, it also sparked interest in the potential of a cinematic universe of evil superheroes, as the post-credits scene hinted at the existence of other super-powered beings who were terrorizing the world, such as evil versions of Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

With Elizabeth Banks' third film as director, "Cocaine Bear," coming in February (and her first that is not attached to an existing franchise), she may finally have the right source material to demonstrate her directing prowess. Comedy, horror, and a certain level of absurdism have been recurring themes across all her acting roles and make her uniquely qualified to adapt the true story that inspired the script.
Admittedly, there's fair reason to go into this next movie with tempered expectations. Banks' 2019 film "Charlie's Angels" was ruled as "empty but endearingly fun" by /Film and designated among that year's biggest box office flops by Variety, while "Pitch Perfect 2" — as a faithful continuation of the first — did not allow Banks much opportunity to add a signature touch.

DC Studios dropped one hell of an announcement this week when it was made public that James Gunn was hard at work on a new "Superman" film, specifically a movie centered on a younger version of the character than previously seen in the Dceu. It's an exciting time to be a fan of DC, because after the success of "The Suicide Squad," the refreshing spin-off series, "Peacemaker," and his "Guardians of the Galaxy" work over at Marvel, Gunn has more than proven he's exactly what Warner Bros. needs to usher in the new era of superhero entertainment. Most are familiar with Gunn's pre-Marvel/DC work on horror films like "Tromeo and Juliet," "Slither," "Dawn of the Dead," and the live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies, but Gunn has been making superhero films outside of the two major companies for a very long time.

It has sometimes been said that Adam Sandler would pick places he wanted to visit and then co-write/produce/star in movies about those places to essentially get an expenses paid trip. John Cena and Jason Momoa look to be taking a page from the Sand Man's book for a new project, action-comedy Killer Vacation.
Okay, so they didn't write the script – that came from Brian and Mark Gunn – but according to Variety, they had so much fun hanging around on the set of Fast X (where Cena is back as Jakob Toretto and Momoa plays a villain) that they wanted to find something else to work on.
Warner Bros. jumped at the chance to pair the actors and now here we are. The plot is a mystery, but those who have seen it say it compares to movies such as True Lies.

As we look out into the great black emptiness of space, we are reminded of the question posed by the Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi- “Where is everybody?” Is life as we understand it a freak chemical fluke, never to be repeated in all of the great cold infinity above us? Or is it in fact an inevitable outcome of a relatively common set of circumstances, resulting in a universe teeming with life and civilisations, and if so, will we ever get to meet them?
And if and when we do encounter life that evolved under another sun, with intelligence different, yet equal to our own, how do we kill it?
Yes, some films tell us that when we encounter new life and civilizations they’ll heal our wounds with magic glowing fingers, teach us that nuclear war is bad, and misunderstand our local customs in a delightful and heartwarming way.

Exclusive: Brian and Mark Gunn are set to adapt the screenplay for Sony Pictures and Escape Artists’ The Kaiju Score based on the AfterShock Comics’ series by James Patrick and artist Rem Broo.
The feature’s plot is being kept under wraps. In the comic book series, The Kaiju Score follows four characters who are attempting a dangerous heist during a giant monster (kaiju) attack. Patrick has described the comic as “a Quentin Tarantino film taking place in some corner of a Godzilla movie.”

Jiao Chen is overseeing the project for Sony Pictures.

Another film I’m very excited to see hitting Blu is The Witches from the Warner Archive Collection, and William Friedkin’s Cruising is getting the special edition treatment from Arrow Video.

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn (which Heather Wixson wrote "soars as a gory slasher/superhero hybrid" in her 4-star review), and if you missed it in theaters or want to experience it again, you'll be pleased to know that Sony is releasing the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 20th (following an August 6th digital release), and we've been provided with the cover art and full list of bonus features:

I know a lot of fans have been excited about the prospect of a sequel to James Gunn’s horror film Brightburn. The movie told a Superman-like origin story but with an evil and sinister twist. The powerful alien boy who crashes on Earth turns out to be a little prick hellbent on murdering people instead of helping them.
While I liked the film and thought it was well-made, it didn’t sit well with me. That being said, if the movie would have kept going after it ended I would have liked to watch the story continue. This first film set the stage for something that could be much more interesting, complex, and engaging.
As of right now, there is no sequel for the film in development, but producer James Gunn did confirm with EW that he is talking about it with the creative team, which includes director David Yarovesky...

James Gunn talks about taking elements of the superhero and horror genres and making something new and exciting. The idea of a superhero that was actually a supervillain is a very simple one, and Gunn talked about deconstructing superhero myths to help bring this idea alive.

The James Gunn-produced super powered horror thriller Brightburn was released this weekend and I’m sure many of you went to the theater to check it out. I did, and I thought it was ok.
I didn’t love the movie. I liked it, I thought it was well made with a solid script and great acting, but damn… it was a bummer of a story. There was really no redeeming value to it, it was just a dark film that left me feeling bummed out and joyless at the end.
Regardless of how it left me feeling, the creative team did a great job bringing their story to life. If their objective was to make you feel like crap by the end of the movie, they totally succeeded!

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” remake is on its way to a commendable Memorial Day weekend debut with an estimated $109 million over the four-day period.
The musical fantasy starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud should uncover about $87 million in its first three days from 4,476 North American theaters after taking in $31 million on Friday. Should estimates hold, “Aladdin” will mark the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend debut of all time, just behind 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” with $110.5 million.
Guy Ritchie directed the remake, with Smith taking on the role of Robin Williams’ Genie and Massoud portraying the titular hero. Naomi Scott stars as Jasmine, along with Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen. Ritchie also co-wrote the script alongside John August, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich producing.
Also debuting this weekend is Screen Gems’ “Brightburn,” which took in $3 million on Friday and is headed for a $10 million four-day start from 2,607 domestic theaters.

Chicago – The opening to the 1950s “Adventures of Superman” TV series includes the words “strange visitor from another planet.” But because Supes had used his subsequent powers for good, he eventually was found not so strange. What if, however, he had been evil, and used his powers destructively? The new film “Brightburn” speculates on such a phenomenon.

Brutal and bludgeoning, David Yarovesky’s Brightburn is a film designed to knock the breath from your chest and subvert expectations. An alien infant crash-lands to Kansas. A childless couple yearns for a baby. The humans come across the tiny spaceship and raise the alien-who-looks-like-a-human as their own. If you think you’ve heard this story before, that is not the case. The script (written by both Brian and Mark Gunn) is an inventive, if illogical glance at the Superman myth, a ‘what if’ re-telling of a situation we all assume we’d handle correctly.

The title "Brightburn" refers to a small town in Kansas, Us. It is the place where alien crash land and is raised with love by a set of perfect, wannabe parents whose prayers of having a child are answered in an unexpected way.
Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and her husband, Kyle (David Denman) feel blessed to have a child gifted by nature. They consider the baby, who arrived out of the sky as Godsend. And for the longest time, their son Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunne) seems like a normal, bright child.

David Yarovesky’s Brightburn earns every puddle of eye juice, mangled corpse, and horrific disfigured gore effect of its *hard* R-rating. Yes, this is the “evil Superman origin” slasher promised. Gruesomely inclined to scare prospective parents off pregnancy timetables; complicated enough to thread adoption drama through rural massacre despicableness. A child discovering limitless power, lied to by society, wrestling temperamental consciousness while befalling the corruption of man. There’s a lot to savor, but the flavors end up somewhat expected despite mature adolescent horrors.
Can you kill what you love or love something that kills? Brightburn isn’t the nightmare to answer such crippling caretaker choices, but hey, here are some wicked genre kills you’ll never scrub away!
Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) is a Brightburn, Kansas resident with an undefined past. Mother Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and father Kyle (David Denman) found their baby boy when his spacecraft crashed in their backyard.

What if someone discovered they had god-like superpowers and decided to use them to destroy humanity instead of saving it? Later tonight, the slasher/superhero mash-up Brightburn arrives on the big screen, which was directed by David Yarovesky and produced by James Gunn. The story, written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, revolves around the Breyer family, who live on a farm in the quiet town of Brightburn, Kansas. Lori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman) are doing their best to raise their adopted son Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) properly, but once he hits his pre-teens, it’s painfully aware to his parents that their kid has some major issues that could potentially put everyone in danger if they cannot get Brandon and his abilities under control.
At the recent press day for Brightburn, Daily Dead spoke with Yarovesky, and he chatted about the difficulties of making familiar superhero tropes scary for today’s audiences, and the importance of nailing the look of the Brightburn character as well. Yarovesky also...

When you see James Gunn attached to a horror film, it offers a ton of promise. Add to that a bit of superhero mythology, and you have something intense and gruesome like Brightburn. In the new film produced by Gunn - written by Brian and Mark Gunn - director David Yarovesky takes the horror to a nasty level. And frankly, this one kind of f*cked me up. So much so that it had to sit with me a bit. It’s bloody, twisted, and features an excellent…...

What would happen if Kal-El crashed to Earth from Krypton, and grew up to be Michael Myers instead of Clark Kent/Superman? That’s the exact set-up of Brightburn, a nasty, gory superhero horror film from director David Yarovesky. Yarovesky and screenwriters Mark Gunn and Brian Gunn aren’t reinventing the wheel here. As someone who has a deep admiration for superhero stories of all types, Brightburn was, as the kids say these days, “100 percent my jam.” It hits all the necessary beats one would expect from an origin story, but once it heads into full-blown horror territory, that’s when Brightburn transforms into a truly creepy and unsettling exploration of just what would happen if an otherworldly entity that had endless powers wasn’t bound to our society by any kind of morality code, and decided to use that to fulfill their darkest impulses.
At the start of Brightburn, we’re introduced to Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman), who have had difficulties conceiving a child and are desperate to complete their family. One fateful night, a ship crashes on their farm in Brightburn, Kansas, containing what looks to be a tiny infant, and the couple immediately thinks their prayers have been answered.

“Superman” meets “The Omen” in “Brightburn,” a watchable but super-silly mix of superheroics and evil-child horror that mashes together singularly uninspired ideas from both. Offering R-rated fantasy competition to “Aladdin” this Memorial Day weekend, it should do Ok with undiscriminating audiences seeking familiar, forgettable genre thrills. But the franchise prayers that an open-ended fadeout dangles seem unlikely to be answered, unless they’re heard in the realm of cheaper, direct-to-streaming sequels.
Not that this hopeful kickoff is exactly deluxe, though it does rep a modest budgetary leap from helmer David Yarovesky’s prior feature, 2014 sci-fi horror “The Hive.” The advertising for “Brightburn” prominently bills James Gunn, “visionary filmmaker behind ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’” That it turns out he’s just a producer here (relatives Brian and Mark Gunn are the scenarists) may lead to some annoyance among those expecting more than B-movie-level spectacle.

In 2003, Mark Millar penned a three-issue series of “Superman” comic books that hinged on one big idea: what if baby Kal-El crash-landed not in the American heartland, but in Cold War era Ukraine? David Yarovesky’s “Brightburn” offers a similar twist on the superhero mythos, albeit one less refined and much, much ickier: what if Superman was a murderous asshole? Produced by James Gunn (who has done both actual superhero films and his own twisted “Super”) and written by two of his own brethren (brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn), the film’s bent towards revisionist superhero history is certainly compelling, but stuck in the confines of the horror genre, it flames out far more than it flies.
The Gunns’ decision to riff on the Superman story is ambitious enough, and that’s to say nothing of how transparently they go out about it: the film opens on a sleepy Kansas farm,...

What if Superman started out evil? And what if that was the only idea you had for your movie? Hence “Brightburn,” a wafer-thin exercise in a supposedly new genre called “superhero horror,” but what is really just a body-count flick haphazardly grafted onto a tweaked version of Superman’s origin story — except this version’s isolated farm boy with indestructible (and destructive) alien powers would rather lift a car not to rescue someone but to kill a grown-up who wasn’t nice to him.
The movie is directed by David Yarovesky, but the hyped name is producer James Gunn, the acclaimed if controversial commander of the snarky-sincere “Guardians of the Galaxy” Marvel franchise, but also the mind behind nasty exploitation fare like his black-humored 2010 indie “Super.” That acquired-taste riff on hero notions featured a power-free vigilante, ultraviolence and not much pleasure, but it’s a satiric gem compared to “Brightburn,...

What if someone with superpowers akin to Superman decided to use their abilities for evil instead of good? The chilling answer to that question is explored in David Yarovesky's Brightburn, and ahead of the movie's theatrical release later this week, Sony released the film's final trailer, confirming that "evil has found its superhero."
Below, you can watch the final trailer for Brightburn (following its exclusive premiere on Bloody Disgusting), featuring Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon Breyer, a troubled extraterrestrial who seems more intent on wiping out mankind with his superpowers than saving it.

We’ve got one final trailer to share with you for producer James Gunn’s Brightburn, and as you’ll see, it puts more of a focus on the nightmarish terror that we’ll see in the film. I’ve heard that this movie is more of a horror movie than anything, and this latest trailer drives that point home.
The film comes from director David Yarovesky from a script written by Brian and Mark Gunn. As we’ve said before, the movie was inspired by the story of Superman, but with evil-ass twist. I’ve been hearing a lot of great things from this movie from people who have seen it, so I’m pretty excited about seeing it later this week when it hits theaters!

After the firing (and since rehiring), of director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3, his writer brother Brian and cousin Mark Gunn crafted this dark Superman-like origin/ spin with Jg on board as producer. In many ways, Brightburn could be interpreted as a twisted manifestation of Gunn’s burnt feelings for superhero cinema after the Disney debacle. With his family writing and director David Yarovesky (The Hive) behind the mic, Brightburn sears like a great flaming bird flip: a sit, swivel and spin on superhero franchises, crafted with an energy, ironic venom and flair to make it timely, fun and electrifying.
The film starts in Brightburn, Kansas, on the farm of thirty-something married couple Tori and Kyle Breyer (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman), who have been trying for a while to fall pregnant. Cue the mammoth fiery meteorite/ space capsule (conveniently carrying a baby) that comes crashing down into the forest near their farm.

I’ve got a new clip here for you to watch for the James Gunn produced super villain horror thriller Brightburn. The clip features the scene in the film where the main young character realizes that he is indestructible. This is the moment he knows what he is really capable of and decides to go on a killing rampage.

Filmmaker James Gunn says he loves Brightburn as it offers a new take on the superhero genre. "I love this movie because it is an entirely new take on the superhero genre," Gunn said in a statement.
Gunn has backed Brightburn with his production company Troll Court Entertainment. Sony Pictures Entertainment India will release the film in the country on May 24.
"It is something we have never seen before. It's a superhero movie with a horror angle. It's also a honest way of coming at the superhero myth because there's something terrifying about the idea of a super-powered alien that would come to Earth." Gunn said.
"Tori thinks her son is going to bring glory to the world and help us, but that's not necessarily the case. In every way we watch this movie, he is a ghost, he is a demon child, and we treated the movie exactly like that,...

Sony Pictures has released an extended red-band clip from James Gunn’s upcoming film Brightburn. It features the super-powered villain of the story brutally attacking a woman working in a diner. An extended trailer has just been released for James Gunn’s highly anticipated superhero horror film Brightburn. This is the movie that tells an origin story much like Superman’s, only instead of a hero bringing hope and inspiration to the world, it’s a young bullied villain who relishes in bringing death and carnage.
The film comes from director David Yarovesky from a script written by Brian and Mark Gunn. It looks like the creative team is going to give us a crazy-ass story filled with some pretty jacked up moments.

In Brightburn, which brings James Gunn back to his darker filmmaking roots, the film imagines a super hero style origin story not unlike Superman's that doesn't exactly go the way comic books have led us to believe it would.
Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks (Slither) Meredith Hanger, David Denman, Matt Jones, Gregory Alan Williams, Jennifer Holland and more, with a script from Brian and Mark Gunn. David Yarovesky, a frequent Gunn collaborator, directs while Gunn and the The H Collective produce.
