The former drummer of Pink Floyd is sitting in the catering area backstage at the Beacon Theatre eating from a tiny bowl of pea soup about three hours before his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, make their New York debut. The last time the 75-year-old played a venue in the city anywhere near this small, it was 1972 and Pink Floyd were road-testing songs from their in-progress LP Dark Side of the Moon. That was just before his life became a blur of private airplanes, sold-out football stadiums...

It’s been almost a year to the day since we lost David Bowie, but the rock icon and beloved creative force is still foremost in the minds of those who knew and loved him best. As Billboard reports, on Sunday evening, some of those people — including fans, friends and even former bandmates — gathered together to celebrate what would have been Bowie’s seventieth birthday for a three-hour charity concert at London’s Brixton Academy. It was an appropriately rocking and raucous event.
The show was hosted by actor (and close Bowie pal) Gary Oldman, who took the stage not only to emcee the event, but to rock out to a few of Bowie’s classics, including “Sorrow” and “The Man Who Sold the World.”

Tony Hadley has denied claims he bullied Lady Colin Campbell. The 66-year-old star threatened to take the Spandau Ballet singer and former 'Dragons' Den' star Duncan Bannatyne to court after claiming their treatment of her was the reason she quit 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!', but Tony's now insisted she was the only one behaving like a bully. He said: ''Everyone who knows me, knows that I'm no bully. I didn't want any confrontations in the jungle, but I won't sit there and allow somebody to call me a buffoon and Brain [Friedman] a 'bitchy old queen'. Who is she...

The '80s were an interesting time for music, especially in London, with fashion and politics often playing as large a part in a band's image as the notes they played. One such band was Spandau Ballet, who formed during the late '70s, but who didn't become big until they released their global hit "True." The band started to drift apart by the end of the '80s, leading to some disputes over royalties--guitarist Gary Kemp was the only credited writer on their songs--although a few members of the band tried to keep things going. Singer/frontman Tony Hadley and brothers Gary and Martin Kemp all remained present in various media, particularly television, but in 2009, the band reunited with the Kemps for a series of sold out British shows that generated new interest in a group...

X Factor series 10's Live Shows kicked off with an '80s Week theme. Joy Division, Billy Bragg, C86, Metallica and the Beastie Boys were all surprisingly snubbed as song choices in favour of Whitney, Bryan Adams and Phil Collins.
Who would ever accuse The X Factor of being predictable?
The song choices weren't the only predictable thing on Saturday night as the old Louis Walsh book of clichés was wheeled out ("This is the toughest challenge yet", "The word with you is potential", "international stars", "you've got the whole package"), and a bunch of oiled-up backing dancers and various wacky stage antics (lifts, giant boxes, wind machines) masked many a vocal sin.

The singer told Absolute Radio's Rock 'N' Roll Football that he was surprised by Kemp's decision to enter the show. He added: "He's a pretty laid back kind of a guy so I was sort of surprised he wanted to put himself under that kind of pressure. "But as he said, I think it was last night in the Diary Room, he said, 'Look, you know, this is the game everyone. Why is everyone getting so worked up?'" Hadley continued: "This (more)...

Hadley will join the show to sing the Gary Kemp-penned track live for the final play of the 'Spandathon'. "I'm proud to do it. I think it will be good fun," Hadley told the station. "Very proud to sing (more)...

Tony Hadley has said that One Direction should have closed last Friday's (July 27) Olympics opening ceremony. The Spandau Ballet frontman said that the British boyband would have been a better choice than Sir Paul McCartney to end the event last week. "If I'm honest I would have liked a really young band to have closed it," Hadley told Absolute Radio. "If you've got Sir Steve Redgrave handing over the torch to the youngsters, it would have been nice to have had One Direction. They're our biggest export at the moment, pure pop." (more)...

British culture is going through a blue period, with actors, musicians and artists all happily admitting that they're privately educated Conservative toffs. What happened?
You may have missed it, but early last month, a very telling photograph appeared in the newspapers. Snapped on New Year's Day by a couple out for a walk on Coombe Hill in the Chilterns, it featured a party of eight – including David and Samantha Cameron, education secretary Michael Gove, film director Tim Burton, and the latter's extremely posh other half Helena Bonham Carter. According to subsequent gossip, the latter couple had been introduced to the Camerons by Bonham Carter's one-time Westminster school contemporary Nick Clegg. Others suggest that the two couples have been friends for years.
The group had reportedly stayed at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat, on New Year's Eve – where the conversation doubtless turned to Bonham Carter's role in The King's Speech,...

Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley has repeatedly turned down offers to swap music for politics because he will never give up life on the stage. The singer has been approached by representatives of Britain's Conservative party, who have attempted to persuade him to stand as a parliamentary candidate.
Hadley admits that although he is interested in politics, he has rejected the offers as he's convinced he has more influence as a pop star. He tells Britain's Daily Telegraph, "I have been asked to stand as an MP (Member of Parliament) for the Tories (the Conservative party) so many times."
"I can't do it because my life is music. I'm a very political person and I have some strong opinions, but I can make more of a difference to politics doing what I do and making my opinions known to people."...

Duff And Lancaster Trade For Charity
Stars including Hilary Duff and Rod Stewart's pregnant wife Penny Lancaster united across the globe on Monday to raise money for charity and mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Lancaster was joined by Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts and Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley to work as traders in London's financial district for the 6th Annual Bgc Charity Day, swapping places with staff to man phones on the trading floor.
The firm's bosses annually commemorate the loss of hundreds of colleagues at their affiliate company Cantor Fitzgerald who were killed after Muslim extremists flew two planes into the World Trade Center in 2001.
Lancaster says, "The buzz on the trading floor was amazing... It's fantastic to think everyone at Bgc Partners has given up their time for free and to be generous enough (sic) to give the day's revenues to charity."
Across the Atlantic, Duff turned up to help the cause by manning phones at Bgc's New York office.

Tony Hadley has insisted that Spandau Ballet didn't reunite for money. Contactmusic reports that the band made the decision to regroup after meeting in a pub. "After a few beers, all the old jokes and stories we'd shared came out again," Hadley explained. "So yeah, there were a few laughs. And we also said the tough stuff we had to say. There were some 'sorrys' too. It was horrible at first, of course." Hadley also said that he decided (more)...

Tony Hadley insists Spandau Ballet didn't reunite for money. The 'True' singer wanted to reform the pop group, who split in 1989, when offered the opportunity because he thought at 49 he wouldn't get the chance again. He said: "There was a massive groundswell of desire from the fans and I thought, well, this is bigger than us. "I'm pushing 50. I just thought, 'What if it never happens again?' It's not about the money." Tony also revealed he and his bandmates - who were embroiled in an acrimonious royalty battle in 1999 - made the decision to reform in a pub. The frontman - who is joined in Spandau Ballet by Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Steve Norman and John...

Spandau Ballet helped Gary and Martin Kemp cope with the death of their parents. The brothers say their bandmates - Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Steve Norman - became their "second family" after their parents died within 48 hours of each other in January. Guitarist Gary said: "I think I coped and my brother did too because of the band. It was like having another family to catch us. I think they understood what we were going through. "They knew our parents very well. They were moved by it and they supported us." Eileen Kemp was undergoing heart surgery at Bournemouth hospital when her husband Frank had a fatal heart attack. Eileen died shortly afterwards. Bassist Martin told Britain's Hello!

Spandau Ballet have said that they will record an album of entirely new music if their comeback is well-received. The band announced their reunion earlier this year and have written one new track for inclusion on an album of acoustic reworkings of their past hits. Singer Tony Hadley told The Guardian: "It's all good now. We'll do the tour, hopefully the album will be successful, and in a couple of years, we'll do a new album with 12 original songs. "I was a bit worried, because I didn't want it to be softer versions of what we're (more)...

Spandau Ballet are set to make a movie. The reformed 80s group are currently at the Cannes Film Festival finalising plans for the feature-length documentary, which will cover both the highs and lows of the band's career. Songwriter Gary Kemp told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "We've got quite a history and there have been great highs and lows. "It will be a feature-length documentary with us talking about everything that's happened over the years. We won't shy away from tackling the bad times." The notoriously hard-drinking group announced their reunion in March and will play a string of concerts in October. In 1999, Gary was involved in a bitter court battle over royalty payments with singer Tony Hadley, drummer...
