Exclusive: UK distributor nabs music doc from Metro International.

UK distributor Metrodome Distribution has picked up Spandau Ballet doc Soul Boys of the Western World from Metro International.

The SXSW title, which documents the story of the iconic ‘80s band through newsreel footage and new video content from the band’s personal archives, is directed by George Hencken.

The deal was negotiated by Metro International head of sales Natalie Brenner on behalf of the producers Scott Millaney and Steve Dagger.

Band members Tony Hadley, John Keeble, Steve Norman and Martin Kemp are in Cannes for a marche screening of the film on Friday.

The film is scheduled for an October 2014 theatrical release in the UK.

Managing director of Metrodome, Jezz Vernon, commented: “It would have been enough to have drawn together the career beats of Spandau Ballet, but George Hencken has made a genuinely special piece of film making, which pushes the medium and transports you back...

Soul Boys of the Western World, a documentary about 1980s group Spandau Ballet that proved a hit at SXSW in March, is to be screened to buyers at the Cannes Marché next month, handled by UK sales company Metro International.

Members of the band, which had more than 20 hit singles such as True and Gold, are expected to make an appearance on the Croisette, five years after launching the project at the film festival.

They will be joined by first-time director George Hencken to screen the film and launch international sales, ahead of a theatrical release later this year.

The film charts the rise of the band, which formed in the late 70s and went on to sell more than 25 million records around the world. The archive-only feature tells how band members Tony Hadley, Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, Steve Norman and John Keeble came together, broke...

The '80s were an interesting time for music, especially in London, with fashion and politics often playing as large a part in a band's image as the notes they played. One such band was Spandau Ballet, who formed during the late '70s, but who didn't become big until they released their global hit "True." The band started to drift apart by the end of the '80s, leading to some disputes over royalties--guitarist Gary Kemp was the only credited writer on their songs--although a few members of the band tried to keep things going. Exclusive: UK sales outfit boards SXSW-bound doc about iconic 80s band.

Metro International has boarded sales on documentary Soul Boys of the Western World about iconic 1980s band Spandau Ballet, which is set to premiere at SXSW in March.

The archive film charts the rise, fall and reunion of the New Romantic group, comprising Tony Hadley, Gary Kemp, Steve Norman, John Keeble and Martin Kemp, which sold an estimated 20 million records worldwide.

The documentary, which debuts in SXSW’s 24 Beats Section, is directed by long-term Julien Temple collaborator George Hencken. Producers are Steve Dagger and Scott Millaney.

Metro International partner and head of sales Natalie Brenner told Screen: “We are very excited to have George Hencken’s entertaining and beautifully crafted documentary on our slate.

“It’s going to thrill the hordes of Spandau fans around the world but also delight anyone who harbors nostalgia for the 1980s music, fashion and culture.”

Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley has repeatedly turned down offers to swap music for politics because he will never give up life on the stage. The singer has been approached by representatives of Britain's Conservative party, who have attempted to persuade him to stand as a parliamentary candidate.

The firm's bosses annually commemorate the loss of hundreds of colleagues at their affiliate company Cantor Fitzgerald who were killed after Muslim extremists flew two planes into the World Trade Center in 2001.

Lancaster says, "The buzz on the trading floor was amazing... It's fantastic to think everyone at Bgc Partners has given up their time for free and to be generous enough (sic) to give the day's revenues to charity."

Across the Atlantic, Duff turned up to help the cause by manning phones at Bgc's New York office.

London, Sep 7 – Veteran singer Sir Tom Jones will headline Elvis Presley tribute concert to be held in London, to mark what would have been The King’s 75th birth anniversary.

Tom, Presley’s close friend from 70s, will share the stage with the likes of KT Tunstall, Mica Paris, Tony Hadley and Travis’ Fran Healy for Radio 2’s ‘Elvis Forever’ show in London’s Hyde Park.

Presley’s ex-wife, Priscilla, will co-host the event and it will be concluded with fireworks display paying tribute to the music legend’s back catalogue.

Spandau Ballet helped Gary and Martin Kemp cope with the death of their parents. The brothers say their bandmates - Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Steve Norman - became their "second family" after their parents died within 48 hours of each other in January. Spandau Ballet are set to make a movie. The reformed 80s group are currently at the Cannes Film Festival finalising plans for the feature-length documentary, which will cover both the highs and lows of the band's career. Songwriter Gary Kemp told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "We've got quite a history and there have been great highs and lows.
