Cousin of TV host/singer Merv Griffin.

Is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy and he engaged in covert submarine operations off the coast of Thailand.

Played a cop on Hill Street Blues (1981), then went on to direct episodes of cop shows NYPD Blue (1993) and Third Watch (1999).

Best known for his hot-under-the-collar cop, Officer Andy Renko, on the hit '80s series Hill Street Blues (1981), he later concentrated on TV directing and producing, winning the Director's Guild Award for his work on another hit series, ER (1994).

Attended the Woodstock (NY) music festival in 1969.

Son of Charles Maurice Haid Jr. and Grace Marian Folger, children: Arcadia Elizabeth, Brittany Catherine.
