Just when you think “The Weight” has reached peak exposure in the culture, Robbie Robertson’s 1968 song — and its original recording by the Band — always manages to stage a comeback. During the past five decades, it’s repeatedly popped up in soundtracks, from Easy Rider to The Big Chill to the recent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In 2019, an all-star remake featuring Robertson, Ringo Starr and musicians from around the world generated millions of views. And next week, a new Band box set will revive “The Weight” again,...

Carl Franklin’s adaptation of the great Walter Mosley novel still plays like a winner. Denzel Washington’s star quality and acting prowess shine from the smart & handsome production, with Tak Fujimoto cinematography that put the color back into ’90s filmmaking. Everybody’s good and Don Cheadle’s loose-cannon henchman ‘Mouse’ is exceptionally so. There’s plenty to enjoy in this hard/soft-boiled tale, starting with the great music. It’s one of Washington’s best pictures, and should have initiated an entire franchise of Walter Mosley / Easy Rawlins detective adventures.

You don’t have to be mad to work here (but it helps)…
I love Apocalypse Now. As a piece of cinema, it attempts to explain not only a war but something in the hearts of men. It has the flashy set pieces of war films, it has the great music of the Vietnam era as a soundtrack but it also has a tale that has gnawed at me for years. Something about it unsettles me more than I would like to admit. It sounds like a terrible idea for a Hollywood feature and I very much it would get green lit today. Watching it again I was interested to see that Martin Sheen is third in...

Mick Fleetwood will host a one-of-a-kind concert honoring the early years of Fleetwood Mac and its co-founder Peter Green on February 25th at the London Palladium.
Fleetwood has enlisted an all-star cast of musicians to perform, including Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Jonny Lang, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Zak Starkey, Steven Tyler and Bill Wyman.
“The concert is a celebration of those early blues days where we all began, and it’s important to recognize the profound impact Peter and the early Fleetwood Mac had on the world of music,” Fleetwood said in a statement.

Jimmy Page went to some dark places in the years following John Bonham’s sudden death in September 1980. Led Zeppelin had been at the center of the guitarist’s life since the band began 12 years earlier and they were gearing up for an American tour when the tragic news hit and brought all band activity to an immediate halt. The Who responded to the death of their drummer two years earlier by simply hiring a new one and hitting the road, but Zeppelin were unwilling to go that route and...

Mariah Carey’s “A No No,” released last year on her album Caution, continues to take on a life of its own with its second remix release, featuring up-and-coming rapper Shawni.
In the video, Mariah and Shawni party and parade around a colorful subway car, alongside a troupe of dancers and some extremely well-dressed passengers. It’s essentially the same video as the one for an earlier “A No No” remix, featuring Stefflon Don, released last month. (We stan a legend who recycles.) This time, though, the featured rapper is actually in the clip.

Here’s something I never expected to see: I ran to the blaxploitation attraction Willie Dynamite because I like actress Diana Sands, and it’s her last picture in a too-short career. But the main character on view, a gaudy fur-wearing pimp, is played by none other than Roscoe Orman, well known to a couple of generations of kids as none other than ‘Gordon’ in the long-running TV show Sesame Street. It’s like watching MisterRogers play Hannibal Lecter!

A consistently hilarious 90-minute chat that could have gone on for twice as long without ever feeling like too much of a good thing, “Tea With the Dames,” from director Roger Michell (“Notting Hill”), is as cozy and satisfying as its title suggests.
Simply, it consists of Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Plowright and Dame Eileen Atkins gathering together at Plowright’s home and talking, and the verbal volleying, interruptions, sentence-finishing, and anecdotal confirmation of a 60-plus year friendship between the four only lags when the participants themselves look into the camera to tell the filmmakers that they’re tired.
Bracketed by theater-based vocal warm-up exercises, with all four women rapidly repeating chants such as “red lorry yellow lorry” (and a closing-credits attempt at a tongue twister that won’t be spoiled here), the conversation follows a loosely chronological trajectory — Atkins shares stories of her earliest years...

The stars have now officially begun to properly pile out onto the red carpet at Royal Albert Hall as we count down for the BAFTAs to begin at 6:45 p.m. London time. They are all wearing black in support of the Time’s Up movement, following on from other precursor awards like the Golden Globes. We’re also seeing plenty of those Time’s Up badges pinned to the suits and gowns of the attendees arriving. And they all look rather grand.
Kristin Scott Thomas, a BAFTA favorite and Best Supporting Actress nominee for “Darkest Hour,” looks particularly regal in her black gown with white lapel trimming. “Three Billboards” duo Sam Rockwell (nominated for Best Supporting Actor) and Martin McDonagh (nominated for Picture, Director And Original Screenplay) look the definition in gentlemanly in their tuxedos. McDonagh has elected to go all black with his suit – his top button is...
