From unseen forces to dangerous desires, from the remorseful living to the remorseless dead, from under the earth to creepy closed doors, Arrow Video FrightFest 2019 continues the festival’s fine tradition of showcasing the best in global genre short filmmaking. This year’s five continent selection unleashes the newest creations from both upcoming and established filmmakers and embraces a record fifteen UK films, seven spotlighted selections from Canada and a breakthrough entry from The United Arab Emirates.
Homegrown talent continues to energise the UK film industry, as reflected in this year’s entries. Olivia Hallinan wants a 'Sugar Rush' reunion. The 29-year-old beauty is keen to reprise her role as lesbian teenager Kim in a follow up to the first two series - which centred around her alter-ego's strong feelings for best friend Sugar (Lenora Crichlow) and ran from 2005 to 2006 - but only if it ''felt right'' to revisit the story. Speaking at the launch of the new Baileys Chocolat Luxe drink in Covent Garden, central London, last night (10.09.13), she said: ''I would be well up for a 'Sugar Rush' reunion. But only if it felt right, some of these...

The Inbetweeners' Joe Thomas and Simon Bird go back in time for a new comedy - where they chicken out of World War One.
They have teamed up with Thomas's long-term writing partner Jonny Sweet for a new show, Chickens, about three young men who avoid joining the army during the First World War.
Chickens is a Channel 4 comedy, made by Big Talk Productions, which is about three youngsters who avoid combat in the First World War: George (played by Thomas) is a conscientious objector, Cecil (Bird) would love to be fighting for queen and country but his flat feet mean the army won't have him - and then there's Bert (Sweet), a "philandering scaredy-cat" on the run.
The comedy is based around how the three can win over the women of the village.

Bringing together multiple components of genre filmmaking, the British feature Jack Falls found a recipe for success by winning best action film at the 2011 London Independent Film Festival.
It's the final part of a trilogy, each based on a graphic novel written by director Paul Tanter and illustrated by Oscar Alvarado.
More details, plus reaction from the filmmakers and a trailer for Jack Falls, are included below.
Tanter, who attended the festival, said: "I'm thrilled to accept this award from the Liff. The competition within independent film has never been better, and we are honoured to have not only been included amongst those selected, but to have won the award too."
All three films are shot in a Sin City style - using splashes of colour against high-contrast black and white - with comic book undertones that reflect the trilogy's origins.

I caught some of the latest (and, sadly, it seems, the last) series of the BBC’s Lark Rise to Candleford when I arrived in London in January. My interest was piqued when I heard my 70something aunt and her grandchildren (my cousins), nine- and 13-year-old girls, gossiping about the characters as if they knew the Victorian villagers who populate the show. I figured any series that excites kids and grannies alike has got to be worth a look. And it was. Now I’m hooked, and have four years’ worth of the show to go back to. Gentle in a way that is rarely seen on British or American TV these day -- when both are dominated by gritty crime dramas and meanspirited comedies and reality shows -- it tells the simple, funny, bittersweet tales of the people of Lark Rise, a 19th-century Oxfordshire village, and Candleford, the slightly more sophisticated town nearby.

Today sees the release on DVD and Blu-ray of the third chapter in the Jack Trilogy – Jack Falls, a film we’ve been following for some time and we had the chance to sit down with writer/director Paul Tanter to talk about the film, the pressures and pleasures of a first time directing gig and the future for Jack and for Paul.
We reviewed the film here and there’s plenty of Jack to catch up on here.
To begin – how did you get started in the industry – how did you get Jack Said published and then made into a film?
I got started when Jack Says was in pre-production. The producers had an early draft of the script they wanted working on and Rita Ramnani, who had been attached to play Erin from the start, suggested me. We had been friends since university and she knew I was...

Jack Falls is the third film in a series of neo-noir crime thrillers (trilogy). This title releases in the United Kingdom March 21st, with a North American release unannounced. This is Paul Tanter's first time behind the lens and his adaptation of his own graphic novels is best in this third film. However, Jack Falls never rises above the cliches of the criminal underworld and the characters therein e.g. the femme fatale, the criminal overlord.
Jack, played by Simon Phillips, transitions into this third film with a near mortal bullet wound. Consort Natasha (Olivia Hallinan) saves his life, with some persistence. Soon, Jack is on the track of those who tried to end his life. The following is a shallow mystery,...

The final chapter in Paul Tanter’s Jack trilogy is an effective thriller rooted in, but not burdened by, the gritty London gangster genre and completes the story of Jack Adleth in a compelling fashion.
As this is the endgame the film is stripped down to its essentials; the momentum of the film carries everything and everyone to their inevitable end with a sense of urgency. The high contrast black and white, previously used in the flashback sequences of the preceding films, is a bold move, with colour used sparingly and it’s more than a superficial choice – this film is about good and evil, with very little in between. There is duplicity here but for the most part once Jack decides that an end is needed the whole film shakes off the extraneous elements prevalent in many films of this sort.

Lark Rise To Candleford will not be returning for a fifth series, the BBC have confirmed. The "memorable and much loved" period drama - which stars Julia Sawalha, Olivia Hallinan and Linda Bassett - will leave TV screens for good when the current run reaches its conclusion on February 13. In a statement to the press, BBC One controller Danny Cohen explained: "Lark Rise To Candleford has been a truly wonderful part of the BBC One schedule over the last few years, but after four series we feel that the time is right to make room for new dramas which we hope will be taken to the nation’s hearts in just the same way. While I confess to not having seen the previous two films in the trilogy concluded by Paul Tanter's Jack Falls I certainly like what I'm seeing in the trailer for this one. Stylish photography, a gritty noir tone, a hard edged anti-hero, believable action and a few familiar faces, like Jason Flemyng. Here's the official word:
Returning to complete the first ever seperately made for film release trilogy of British films, comes Jack Falls, the film noir follow up to Jack Said and Jack Says and final installment in Jack's downward journey. Surviving a murder attempt in Amsterdam, former undercover police officer Jack Adleth returns to London to seek revenge and settle some old scores, but he soon finds himself in danger not just from his former criminal associates, but his old police colleagues too. Jack Falls is the third film in the comic book series written by Paul Tanter, and the new trailer for the film adaptation, which stars Simon Phillips, Tamer Hassan, Dexter Fletcher, Adam Deacon, Martin Kemp, and Olivia Hallinan, looks pretty impressive.
Following the continuing downward spiral of an undercover cop Jack Falls is set to pick up where the last chapter ended up, and the London noir styling of the previous films looks just as good in these trailers below.
We spoke to Paul following the wrap on the previous film in the series Jack Said and he talked about the next chapter in the series, and soon we’ll get the chance to see how far the writer/director will push his main character.

In our first annual Top 50 Lesbian and Bi Characters poll, we asked you to vote for your favorite characters from film, television, and internet shows.
You cast your votes, and now we have the results. Before we reveal the winners, let's take a look at some of the trends that emerged.
Almost all of the characters were from films and television shows that made their debut after the year 2000. A few of the exceptions include Kerry Weaver from ER, and the ass-kicking ladies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While most of the characters were from Us productions, a fair amount came from international shows, including our top two characters (from the UK show Skins).
Also notable was the fact that some of your favorite characters, the leads from Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) and Idgie Threadgood from the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), were never officially presented as lesbian or bisexual.
