Following the film’s Sundance premiere and sale to Sideshow and Janus Films, “Peter Hujar’s Day” has released a first look.
Based on the book of the same name by Linda Rosenkrantz, “Peter Hujar’s Day” is director Ira Sachs’ follow-up to “Passages” (Ben Whishaw and Franz Rogowski). His latest film once again features Whishaw, now paired on-screen with Rebecca Hall. The two play friends, Peter Hujar (Whishaw) and Rosenkrantz (Hall), who connect over a 24-hour period in December 1974 and record an intimate discussion. Sachs took inspiration from a transcript of their real-life conversation.
The clip features a conversation between Hujar and Rosenkrantz as they discuss their differing views on stardom and artists. Hujar proclaims that he wants his work to stand on its own without stars, while Rosenkrantz doesn’t see the appeal in stars even as big as Joan Crawford. By the end, Hujar rests his head on Rosenkrantz...

It’s official: The book isn’t always better than the movie.
Filmmakers have been interpreting popular books for the screen since the invention of cinema, from influential novels to page-turning mysteries, comics, and buzzy book-club picks. But if you’re looking for a book-to-movie viewing recommendation, no need to consult a librarian — we’ve rounded up some of the most exciting and engrossing films that’ve been adapted from the page.
Because there are so many adaptations out there, we’re keeping this list to original Netflix films. Those page-to-screen stories include titles as varied as Rebecca Hall’s moving take on the Harlem Renaissance classic Passing, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s kinetic action flick taken from the panels of comic book The Old Guard, and Martin Scorsese’s engrossing crime saga realizing the nonfiction mob chronicle I Heard You Paint Houses — among many others. Isabella Rossellini has joined Ryan Murphy’s upcoming FX series “The Beauty” in a recurring guest star role, Variety has learned.

FX and 20th Century Television declined to comment. A representative for Murphy could not be immediately reached for comment.
“The Beauty,” from co-creators Murphy and Matthew Hodgson, was given an 11-episode order from FX. Ira Sachs has a sneaky way of building a rapport between his co-stars.
“He does this thing where he introduces the two actors, usually at a cafe or restaurant, and then he just leaves you so you’re forced to talk,” Ben Whishaw tells The Hollywood Reporter about the American filmmaker. The British star was plunged into this exact scenario with fellow Brit Rebecca Hall — the pair are starring in Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day, getting its international premiere in the Berlinale’s Panorama section.
“We just talked for hours at this diner in New York, and it was so nice,” recalls Whishaw, star of Black Doves, Paddington and the James Bond franchise. “It sounds like it could be a horrible thing, but it was a lovely thing. You end up going beyond the politeness of what you might just do if you met each other on a film set.

Ben Whishaw isn’t averse to juggling multiple and very different projects, but even he admits there was a point last year when things reached near farcical levels.
Around the same time he was shooting Netflix’s pulpy spy thriller series “Black Doves,” playing a contract killer with a conscience alongside Keira Knightley, he was recording the voice of Paddington Bear for the marmalade lover’s latest family adventure, “Paddington in Peru,” while also rehearsing for his lead role in a new West End adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s bleak tragicomedy “Waiting for Godot.”
“And all in one week! It was one of the strangest gear switches ever,” he says, speaking to Variety from his apartment in East London during a rare and brief period of rest for one of the U.K.’s most in-demand talents. “But it is nice to inhabit so many different worlds.”

Disney pushed the opening of “Elio,” the studio’s upcoming Pixar film, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi’s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay.”
“Elio,” an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. That means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony’s “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers.
Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for “Send Help” and “Ella McCay,” both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. “Send Help,” a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O’Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan.

Disney just shifted this summer’s Pixar movie Elio by one week from June 13 to June 20.
Typically, the June Pixar movies go out during Father’s Day weekend, but Disney is going a week later with this one.
Elio moves away from being head-to-head with Universal/DreamWorks’ live-action take of How to Train Your Dragon on June 13, and instead will go head-to-head with the adult skewing zombie title 28 Years Later on June 20.
In addition, the date shift for Elio creates space in Disney’s summer slate, giving Lilo & Stitch (5/23) more room to play, with the Pixar title still ahead of anticipated blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps (7/25). Elio will be the only animated release in the wide gap between Looney Tunes (3/14) and Smurfs (7/18).
Other Disney changes are as follows:
20th Century Studios’ James L. Brooks directed dramedy Ella McCay starring Woody Harrelson and Rebecca Hall is now dated on...

While Sundance hasn’t had a plethora of the late night bidding wars we used to see in the good old days of the festival, the weirdness of the Los Angeles fires and the advent of the online platform suggest we will still see some deals close in a matter of days. That’s a good thing considering over 60 films came into this year’s Sundance looking for homes. As we previously reported, the hope is that even more distributors could get creative.
Below we’ll update all the acquisitions out of the festival as they arrive. Here are the movies we think could sell big.

“Peter Hujar’s Day,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance, has sold to Sideshow and Janus Films. It’s one of the few projects to land a buyer out of the festival so far.
Written and directed by Ira Sachs, “Peter Hujar’s Day” is set over a 24-hour period in December 1974 and centers on one conversation between photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) and his close friend, writer Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall), who recorded their talk for an art project. Hujar, who died of AIDS in 1987, only became celebrated as an artist after his death.
The film debuted in Park City to positive reviews, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it a “magical 1974 time capsule of a movie.” In his review, he wrote that “in its tiny-scaled staged-documentary way, ‘Peter Hujar’s Day’ is exquisitely done and arresting to watch.”

After its Sundance Film Festival premiere, Ira Sachs’ latest film, Peter Hujar’s Day, has landed at specialty distributors Sideshow and Janus Films for North America.
Peter Hujar’s Day, which is next set to screen at the Berlin Film Festival, is a word-for-word rendering of a 1974 conversation between photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz. The back and forth is focused on Hujar recounting the entirety of his previous day’s activities, which included photographing Allen Ginsberg for The New York Times and talking about his other acquaintances in the ’70s New York art scene. For the past two decades, Andrew Garfield has stood out as one of the most charming and talented actors that Britain has to offer. Over the course of his career, he's proven himself to be constantly eager to take on new challenges, appearing in a Catholicism-soaked period drama one moment and a sprightly superhero flick the next. You never know exactly what he's going to take on next, except that he's guaranteed to bring a certain boy-next-door charisma to every performance.
After making his on-screen debut in 2005's teen comedy "Sugar Rush," he catapulted to stardom with a string of well-received leading roles. Garfield is no stranger to awards season, as he has received nominations at the Academy Awards, Emmys, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Tonys. And while not every project of his is a slam dunk, a lot of them are, and all are improved by his presence. Here are...

Ira Sachs’s Peter Hujar’s Day is crafted out of just a tiny sliver of a fragment of New York’s mid-1970s culture scene. As part of a larger project, well-connected autofiction writer Linda Rosenkrantz asked her friend, photographer Peter Hujar, to come by her Yorkville apartment on December 19, 1974 and describe everything he did over the course of one day while she recorded him. Though she meant it to be a larger project, she was never able to make the recording into anything. But the written transcript of their conversation was discovered in 2019 and turned by Sachs into an engrossingly personal two-hander.

The Alabama Solution
Relying heavily on footage shot by inmates on prohibited cellphones, Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman’s powerful and gripping documentary isn’t an easy watch, but it’s a crucial one. The film’s focus is on corruption and abuses of power specific to Alabama’s prisons — and the heroism of the men who have found ways to evolve within a system that has no interest in participating in their rehabilitation and denies their basic humanity in every way. — Daniel Fienberg
Blknws: Terms & Conditions
Before his death in 1963, scholar W.E.B. Du Bois spent decades trying to publish an encyclopedia about people of African descent. That mission propels Kahlil Joseph’s hypnotic debut feature — a kinetic video essay blending Afro-futurist narrative, archival footage and memoir — that’s like an index of Black culture from the past 50 years. Joseph animates the fictional story of a journalist reporting on a transatlantic curatorial project with voiceover,...

Recent years have seen many filmmakers take a less linear approach to the biopic, inviting audiences to learn more about the subject than a superficial understanding of their life events. Ira Sachs’s latest film, Peter Hujar’s Day, takes the slice-of-life genre to its extreme, delivering an experimental work that many may dismiss as uneventful but has many fascinating layers to unpack. In taking this unorthodox approach, Sachs helps audiences know more about Hujar and the world in which he worked than any simple biopic could.
Peter Hujar’s Day Review
Peter Hujar’s Day is, as the title implies, a narration of a day in the life of Peter Hujar, a gay portrait photographer who has recently become acclaimed for being the seminal figure he was despite the lack of recognition he received at the time. And because of this, the film — like its subject — is incredibly humble and minimalistic in nature,...

So today, while dissecting her decades-long filmography, let’s take a look at one of her most underrated masterpieces in Hollywood.

When I look at Peter Hujar’s portrait of poet Allen Ginsburg, taken on December 18, 1974, it’s strikingly nonchalant. Ginsberg is standing on the sidewalk, one hand in pocket and the other looped through the straps of a bag draped on his shoulder. He’s looking right down the barrel of the lens with an “okay, you’re taking my picture” expression on his face. Ginsberg is perhaps the most recognizable name to come out of the beat generation of poets but he looks like he could be anybody––he could be your buddy Carl. It was taken for the New York Times but certainly doesn’t have the gloss and sophistication of celebrity portraits we see in major publications today. The austere street beside him is on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood now flooded with tourists, boutiques, and banality. Just as Hujar’s photo is indicative of an...

“Peter Hujar’s Day” is one of those films whose title is almost humorously straightforward, yet only gives a hint of what the experience of watching it is actually like. While true that it is about a day in the life of the late photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) that he recounts to his close friend Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall) in mundane, expansive detail for a book that notably never came to be, it becomes about a moment in time, their place in it, and his anxieties as an artist. Handsomely shot by cinematographer Alex Ashe, whose richly textured visuals make it entrancing to watch even when little is happening, it’s a film about both everything and nothing as Whishaw literally just tells a story to the camera for the entire runtime.

Ira Sachs’ latest film “Peter Hujar’s Day” is a fascinating experiment and historical document, and in speaking at the IndieWire Studio, presented by Dropbox, he said it “kept me up at night” trying to figure out how to make it cinematically interesting.
The film, a tight 75 minutes, is a filmed recreation of a conversation between famed New York photographer Peter Hujar and his friend and journalist Linda Rosenkrantz from 1974 in which he describes a day in his life in NYC’s downtown art scene. He discusses chats with Susan Sontag and photographing Allen Ginsberg, and all of it was recorded as part of a transcript that was unearthed just in 2024, 50 years after the conversation first happened.
With only two people talking, Sachs had to find a way to make the dialogue “suspenseful, emotional, not boring,” which he called an “interesting challenge.”

“Peter Hujar’s Day” reunites writer-director Ira Sachs with his “Passages” star Ben Whishaw, and Sachs revealed at TheWrap’s Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt that his latest effort began while he was still making that searing 2023 relationship drama.
“I was working in Paris with Ben on ‘Passages,’ and I saw a book in a bookstore called ‘Peter Hujar’s Day,’ and it was a publication of a transcript of a conversation that took place in 1974 between the photographer Peter Hujar and his friend Linda Rosencrantz,” Sachs recalled. “I picked it up and read it in a cafe, and by the time I finished it, I thought this would be a really interesting project or film or a piece of art to make with Ben specifically.”

It has also been described as a “gonzo action horror thriller.” So the next Godzilla / Kong sequel is moving ahead without him… but that hasn’t disrupted his working relationship with Hall. Ben Whishaw again proves himself as the brilliant actor we all knew he was, if we were looking closely enough, in Ira Sachs’ “Peter Hujar’s Day.” The film, set in 1974 New York City, is an intimate two-hander starring just Whishaw and Rebecca Hall as gay photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz, respectively. They gathered, it’s true, on a cold day in December, where Hujar recounts all the events of the previous one, which involved photo opportunities with Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and a lot of quotidian nothingness. But those small moments of a day grow profound as Peter’s winding monologue wears on. Writer/director Sachs’ extraordinary new movie never breaks from the pair, and at times becomes like a documentary about the greatness of the actors themselves, Mozart possessing the soundtrack as Sachs and cinematographer Alex Ashe take longing, lingering B-roll of the performers.

Park City – Sometimes, despite the best efforts of those involved, a movie isn’t really a movie. Maybe it’s really a short subject extended beyond its means. Maybe it’s more of an experiment or a well-intentioned exercise. In that context, it gives us no pleasure to inform you that Ira Sachs‘ latest dramatic endeavor, “Peter Hujar’s Day,” falls into a number of those unflattering categories.

In the ever-shifting world of the biopic, a biopic can be many different things. It can be like a novel (if it covers someone’s entire life). It can have the more concentrated quality of a short story (if it’s set during one key period). On that score, you might say that “Peter Hujar’s Day” is the biopic as sonnet. The entire film takes place in one day — but more than that, it consists entirely of Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw), the noted New York photographer of the 1970s and ’80s, having a rambling conversation with his friend, Linda Rosenkrantz (Rebecca Hall), in which he recounts everything he did the day before.
It seems that the two were collaborating on a project. Rosenkrantz instructed Hujar to write down everything that happened to him on Dec. 18, 1974, and to show up the following day at her apartment on 94th St. in Manhattan,...

In 2008, Ira Sachs got fired by his manager. The most indie spirited of independent filmmakers had refused to play the game for too long, and the bill had finally come due.
“I understood it in a way,” Sachs, more than a decade and a half-dozen features removed from that experience, says. “Because I was not entering the business, and his job was to facilitate the business of Hollywood, which was not what I was interested in doing. They were trying to get me jobs as opposed to what I was trying to do, which was produce my own work.”
For the record, Sachs thinks that he never would have gotten the gigs that his representatives wanted him to land. But the experience helped rethink his value in an industry that usually measures those things in terms of box office grosses.

We got confirmation late last year that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, was originally set to return, but ultimately departed the project under "amicable" circumstances, with Grant Sputore stepping in to replace him shortly after.
Now, Deadline reports that the next MonsterVerse movie has founds its lead in Kaitlyn Dever.
We don't have any details on who she'll play, but the trade mentions that, while Kong and Godzilla will still be fronting the film, Legendary is looking to build on its human characters. The story will focus on "Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat."

The calendar has officially flipped on to 2025 and with that brings a new year, new hopes, and a new Sundance Film Festival lineup.
Today marks the first day of the annual independent film festival which takes place mountains of Park City, Utah.
Sundance has always been known for big stars in little films and the occasional massive breakthrough by an unknown.
This year looks very promising to deliver on both of those fronts.
The 2025 edition is in no short supply of recognizable names Benedict Cumberbatch, Jennifer Lopez, Coleman Domingo, Olivia Coleman, Jon Lithgow, Rebecca Hall, John Malkovich, and many others star in some of the most anticipated titles of the festival.
As with any Sundance comes a massive slate of incredible documentaries. Questlove returns to Sundance after debuting his Academy Award-winning Summer of Soul at the 2021 Festival. This year he brings Sly Lives!, a profile on Sly and the Family Stone.

Jessica Chastain, Ben Whishaw, Rebecca Hall, Chloë Sevigny, Tilda Swinton and Marion Cotillard were among a first wave of star guests confirmed for the 75th edition of the Berlinale at its line-up press conference on Tuesday.
Chastain will hit the festival as the co-star of Michel Franco’s Golden Bear Contender Dreams, while Whishaw and Hall will attend with Ira Sach’s Peter Hujar’s Day, which plays in the competitive Panorama sidebar. Sevigny is the star of another Panorama title, Magic Farm by Amalia Ulman.
Cotillard tops the cast of Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s Golden Lion Contender The Ice Tower in the role of the enigmatic star of a production of The Snow Queen, who bewitches a young runaway.
Other confirmed guests include Archie Madekwe, who co-stars in Berlinale Special Gala title Lurker; Rose Byrne, who tops the cast of Golden Bear contender If I Had Links I’d Kick You and Lars Eidinger,...

Superhero movies produced by Marvel Studios have been among the biggest tentpole blockbusters in Hollywood for years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely become ubiquitous with the superhero genre, with its projects often featuring the biggest names in entertainment in various starring roles. With their global reach, Marvel movies can provide their actors with the largest possible audience as far as modern cinema goes. However, not every actor has readily accepted the opportunity to join Marvel films, even for the most prominent parts in the MCU.
Whether due to not particularly connecting with the material or matters outside of their control, numerous A-list actors have turned down Marvel movie roles. In some cases, these actors have then gone on to appear in films based on Marvel's biggest competition, DC Comics. With actors rejecting some of Marvel's most important characters, the MCU would've looked very different if some of its planned castings panned out as intended.
