First worked as a scenic artist at the Sheffield Repertory Theatre. Acted on stage at the West End from the age of seventeen. Given leading roles in early TV series, he switched his attention to directing in the late 1950's, acquiring a reputation for visual style, particularly for his use of unusual camera angles such as reflections in mirrors.
