In the 1924 Olympics in Paris, he won a bronze medal as a member of the U.S. water polo team, which also had Johnny Weissmuller as a member. Handy founded the Jam Handy Organization, which produced thousands of short films.

Before starting his own film production company, he worked for renowned animators John Randolph Bray and Max Fleischer.

His father was a major in the Confederate army during the American Civil War.
