In the closing days of the 2012 presidential campaign, Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois of the New Radicals teamed up with Ne-Yo, the Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik, Herbie Hancock, Delta Rae, and Natasha Bedingfield to create the Barack Obama campaign anthem “Forward.” Twelve years later, Alexander and Brisebois have updated the song as “Forward (We’Re Not Going Back!)” for Kamala Harris, joined once again by Ne-Yo and Herbie Hancock. William Nevious had just grabbed his drum kit from the back of the truck, but this wouldn’t be a typical gig.
As the percussionist in the Screaming Eagles Combo, Nevious knew part of the reason he ended up in South Vietnam during the final months of 1967. When he and his fellow band members weren’t on kitchen duty, guard patrol, or setting aflame oil drums full of human waste, they’d be driven or flown to what his bandmate Rick Linton calls “bases and shitholes,” some in the middle of the Vietnamese jungle.

Who is the real Childish Gambino? The punchline rapper of 2013’s Because the Internet, exploring his identity crises alongside the majestic movie magic of Ludwig Göransson? The psychedelic funkateer of 2016’s “Awaken My Love” who sang psychedelic ragers about love, unity and rebellion? The experimental R&b star of 2020’s 3.20.2020, who tinkered with dance and country and all kinds of Prince-isms? The answer, of course, is all of the above, so don’t be surprised that his fifth and supposedly final album, Bando Stone & the New World, has the actor-writer-director-comedian-singer-rapper-songwriter-producer...

Regardless of its importance to the storytelling process, film music is too often an afterthought. There are a variety of theories that composers have as to why, and they’re mostly related to a lack of education. So I’ve decided to take an active stance in educating filmmakers about the role of music in film and the process of how a film score comes into being.
My hope is that by the end of this piece you’ll be more familiar with: A) the history of film music in general, and B) the key composers who have contributed to the development of film music as an art. So—where did this all start?
The Silent Era (1890s-1929) Silent film star Mary Pickford. Somewhere, a pianist is inspired.
During the silent era, films music is provided by each individual theater, either by phonograph or as performed live by flesh-and-blood musicians.

Before John Williams became the flagship film composer-conductor anyone thought of when they thought about the Hollywood Bowl, that honor belonged to Henry Mancini. And in some years, when Los Angeles is particularly lucky, it still does, even though the scorer behind “The Pink Panther,” “Days of Wine and Roses” and other classic scores has been gone for 30 years now. This Sunday, the LA Phil will devote the Bowl’s traditional opening night to a 100th birthday celebration for the man who, arguably more than any other, turned movie scores into a truly populist artform… and who conducted at the Bowl 29 times.
It’s not even the only major event involving Mancini’s legacy this weekend. Friday will see the release of a tribute album, “The Henry Mancini 100th Sessions – Henry Has Company,” that features among its guests Lizzo, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and, not incidentally,...

Woody Allen’s Coup de Chance starts appropriately with a random encounter and finishes with an out-of-nowhere intervention. But what lies in between those moments of chance is tightly scripted and purposeful, with barely a scene or line out of place. The film is at once among Allen’s most economical works and one of his most free-spirited.
When Alain (Niels Schneider), a fiction writer, runs into Fanny (Lou de Laâge) on a Parisian street near the art auction house where the latter works, it’s a seemingly fleeting moment. Fanny seems charmed but not overly impacted by this encounter with Alain, a passing acquaintance from their time at the Lycée Français in New York. Slightly restless in her marriage to Jean (Melvil Poupaud), a financier whose one-percenter friends describe her as a “trophy wife,” Fanny sees no harm in reconnecting with Alain. You can imagine where this might go.

The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

Joni Mitchell has a nearly 60-year history of winning Grammys, but her first actual singing appearance on the awards show didn’t take place till Sunday night, as she sang “Both Sides Now” for her performance debut on the telecast.
Besides being perhaps her best-known song, “Both Sides Now” had some resonance as a performance pick for the Grammys. Her very first Grammy Award 55 years ago, back in 1969, was for the “Clouds” album, on which “Both Sides Now” appeared.
Mitchell performed the song in the format that has brought her back to the stage on just a few occasions since she recovered from a 2015 brain aneurysm: it was done “Joni Jam”-style, with the singer-songwriter seated on a comfortable-looking throne with her recent trademark cane, surrounded by similarly seated all-star accompanists — in this case, Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Jacob Collier, Lucius, Sista Strings and Blake Mills.

As surely as the sun rises in the east, Hollywood will produce musical biopics. There’s something about that particular kind of fame that works on film, especially if the subject died tragically.
Focus Features has a potential box office hit on its hands with “Back To Black,” a biopic of the working-class British singer Amy Winehouse, who became an international sensation and then died of alcohol poisoning at age 27. All it needs to do, really, is recreate this in its entirety and the movie can’t go wrong:
The picture stars Marisa Abela, a relative newcomer who is best known for co-starring in the HBO series “Industry.” It was reported that Abela does her own singing in the film, which is good for her future prospects as a star, but kind of undercuts the “Back to Black” premise of Winehouse being a once-in-a-lifetime talent a bit. Showbiz!

Mitchell has won nine Grammys in the past, and picked up a lifetime achievement award from the Academy in 2002. She is nominated this year for what could be her 10th Grammy, for best folk album, for her Brandi Carlile-produced 2023 release “Joni Mitchell at Newport [Live].”
No details about next Sunday’s performance were immediately offered. But it comes on the heels of a gradual return to live appearances Mitchell has made in the last two years — three concerts in which she was joined by Brandi Carlile and other friends in “Joni Jam” celebratory ensembles.
Mitchell was assumed by many to retired from public performances after she suffered a debilitating brain aneurysm in 2015. Then word got out that she was actively participating in informal musical gatherings at her home...

One of the ghostwriter’s most valuable skills is getting their subjects to talk. So, when I gathered L.A.’s most successful ghostwriters at the Formosa Cafe to gossip, they knew all my tricks. In desperation, I went with the most transparent of all reporting techniques — buying them all fruity cocktails.
A reputation for discretion is not only how they get work, but how they avoid getting sued; they sign nondisclosure agreements for every memoir they write. But even if they revealed nothing scandalous about their famous clients — or at least nothing that couldn’t be discovered with a Google search — I learned a lot about the curious craft of ghostwriting and the types of personalities drawn to help famous people tell their life stories. Also, I learned why I am far too egotistical to do their job.

Washington — The Kennedy Center Honors was a decidedly tuneful affair, with musical talents representing four of its five recipients – vocalists and/or songwriters Dionne Warwick, Renée Fleming, Queen Latifah and Barry Gibb — along with actor/comedian/filmmaker Billy Crystal.
The program, in its 46th year, followed the traditional format that showcases tributes to each honoree by artists and celebs whose identities are undisclosed in advance. It kicked off with a lively parade of dancers down the aisles, led by emcee and former honoree Gloria Estefan and accompanied by Sheila E on drums — a first for the event. Produced again by Done and Dusted Inc., it will air Dec. 27 on CBS.
Omitted this year was one familiar staple at the event – the inclusion of brief video biographies of each honoree that emphasized their childhoods and routes to success. Instead, minimal use of videos embellished career highlights.

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Los Angeles music and food festival LA3C took a unique approach for the event’s second year, as several thousand attendees made their way through about a half-mile stretch of Downtown LA’s historic core this past weekend from November 10th through the 12th. But rather than occupy a traditional festival ground focused around one larger main stage like it did last year at LA State Historic Park, the festival instead took a decidedly more intimate approach this time and booked four historic, couple thousand-cap venues along Broadway: the Orpheum Theatre,...

When director Nia DaCosta told composer Laura Karpman she wanted the score for “The Marvels” to be a “space opera,” Karpman, who crafted the music for the Disney+ shows “What If” and “Ms. Marvel,” was up to the task. She knew that vocals — specifically male vocals — would need to be a large part of the score.
Out Nov. 10, “The Marvels” sees Brie Larson returning as Carol/Captain Marvel, along with Captain Monica (Teyonna Parris) and Kamala/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). The superhero trio is forced to band together after their powers become entangled, and the women are swapped into one another’s worlds when their powers are activated. When they realize Zawe Ashton’s villain, Dar-Benn, is intent on destroying several worlds, the Marvels set out to stop her.

In Rustin, George C. Wolfe and Colman Domingo recount how one man helped make a movement.
Set to release on Netflix Nov. 17, the biopic — which features a script from Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black — traces the life and work of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, a gay Black man and a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington.
The emotional thrum that underscores Rustin’s triumphs and challenges amid one of the country’s most significant moments in history, is captured through Grammy-winning jazz and classic artist and composer Branford Marsalis’ score. Captured in multiple cities — New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Charlotte and New Orleans — the soundtrack was recorded digitally, then mixed to analog 2-track before being mastered digitally.
That includes the track “Show Me Your Ideas,” one of the score’s more energetic contributions. The song seemingly captures the initial rhythm of an idea and the eventual buzz of collaboration.

When you think of Grammy darlings, Foo Fighters should come to mind. The icons have received 15 Grammys throughout their career, including a record five wins for Best Rock Album. But all these awards, while impressive, have not helped the rockers win outside of the rock and music film fields, despite the group picking up a couple of general field nominations along the way. It’s hard to argue against Foo’s general field losses against heavyweights like Adele, Herbie Hancock, and Amy Winehouse, but it does feel like the legendary band should have won a big category by now after getting nominations for more than 25 years. What if I told you their time is finally here?
Foo Fighters’ “But Here We Are” is arguably the band’s most beloved album by critics. On Metacritic, it holds a score of 86, the highest of their career. Part of the record’s critical...

We are told to judge the art rather than the artist, but sometimes the artist makes this difficult. Woody Allen still carries loud freight – the freight of someone who was accused by his daughter, Dylan Farrow, of child sexual abuse. People will argue that none of the above matters, that he has been convicted of no crime, that only what is onscreen counts. And so we try to watch Coup de Chance, an adequate seriocomic immorality tale that had its world premiere Monday at the Venice Film Festival, with eyes and minds wide open.

If you’re looking for an inviolable law of cinema, the Venice Film Festival just confirmed an ironically delightful one. It is this: Murder agrees with Woody Allen. We already knew that, of course. We knew it from “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” a drama that was shocking when it came out in 1989 — and if you see it today, it’s still shocking, because the theme of the movie isn’t just that ordinary people commit murder (we see that in movies every day). It’s that they seem disturbingly ordinary even as they’re doing it, which is a bit scary. Martin Landau, as a mild bourgeois ophthalmologist who hires someone to kill off his mistress, seemed to be playing the squirmy essence of every amateur criminal, and the fact that he got away with it was the unsettling part. It made you think: How many people like that are out there?...

Exactly who are these people? They’re rich, obviously. They’re Parisian, which means that they are already fantasy figurines in the European curiosity shop of Woody Allen’s imagination. But does any actual modern man, no matter how rich and unfathomably French, come home from work in 2023 to request a cognac from his wife, who then calls out to the maid to bring Monsieur a cognac while she configures herself into a glamour position on the couch? Is this actually 1953? Or maybe 1923 – the Gatsby era, where Woody Allen is clearly a very enthusiastic visitor?
Coup de Chance is Woody Allen’s 50th feature film. At the grand age of 87, he has made his first film in the French language, for which all due kudos. He brings his usual potpourri of plot points – a rich couple, infidelity, an interfering mother-in-law, the aperçu that money and bookish bohemianism make restive bedfellows – to this new tale,...

Winning the Grammy for Album of the Year is definitely an achievement. However, perhaps an even bigger achievement is to do well with the Grammys after you win. Indeed, many artists fail to replicate their Grammy success after Album of the Year victories, less due to a “curse” and more due to how hard it is to have multiple culturally impactful eras. To analyze this, let’s consider the follow-up records to every 21st century Album of the Year winner, divided into three categories: the successes, mixed results, and disappointments.

When I started watching Wayne Shorter’s documentary with the motive to review it, I was a bit apprehensive. Not that I was completely lost regarding the content, as I had not only heard the name of Wayne Shorter, but I had been blessed with the experience of his music as well. But still, analyzing a documentary series that covers the whole life of a man of his stature is something I consider a tough challenge. And considering how dense the Amazon Prime documentary series titled Wayne Shorter: Zero Gravity is, my initial apprehension does make sense.
