- Born in a public servant family, his father Jean worked for Georges Clemenceau and was an historian and his grandfather was also in the army. He is buried beside his father in Decize where his family comes from.
- He first became a lawyer working in 1935 for Maurice Garçon. He was disbarred in 1945 due to his ambiguous activities during the Occupation. He was a witness of the assassination of publisher Robert Denoël on 2 December 1945.
- He was part of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés group. He had a long relationship with Amarande and was a longtime friend of Michel de Ré.
