In the past decade, Hong Kong has seen a growing number of first-time or emerging filmmakers. To help young filmmakers build a long-term sustainable career and to meet the needs of an increasingly diversified audience culture and film industry, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (Hkac) sees a pertinent need to assist filmmakers to expand their professional and personal horizons, enrich their crafts, network and get recognised on local and international levels.

In 2019, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, one of the world’s most prestigious and influential breeding grounds for accomplished filmmakers, the Hkac presents New Waves, New Shores: Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 50 Meets Hong Kong Cinema. Hong Kong-based film critic, journalist and curator, Clarence Tsui, is the Hkac’s guest curator of the film screening series and will conduct discussion panels and workshops under this programme.

Babette Mangolte. © Fleur van Muiswinkel If the name Babette Mangolte doesn’t ring with the same familiarity as such storied French cinematographers as Raoul Coutard and William Lubtchansky, it’s not for lack of innovation or accomplishment. Born in Montmorot in 1941, Mangolte moved to New York in 1970 following a number of years as an assistant cinematographer and apprentice to director Marcel Hanoun. There she quickly integrated herself into the city’s burgeoning experimental cinema scene, befriending luminaries such as Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage, and soon after met a 20-year-old Chantal Akerman whom she proceeded to collaborate with on a series of groundbreaking works throughout the mid-70s. Influenced as much by structuralism as the films of the French New Wave, Mangolte and Akerman deftly utilized time and space as cinematic conduits to visually articulate themes of dislocation, alienation, and female autonomy. The great Manoel de Oliveira turned 104 yesterday! (For more on his most recent feature, see Boris Nelepo's article.) Issue 65 of Senses of Cinema is now online, featuring a piece on Koji Wakamatsu, a conversation with Nicolas Rey, and a look at Marcel Hanoun's Une simple histoire. The resolute Susan Ray has turned to Kickstarter to help fund Action!, a documentary featuring Nicholas Ray's insights into filmmaking that "will be edited mostly from Nick’s film, video, and audio archive—tens of thousands of feet of picture, and hundreds of hours of audio recordings of interviews, classes, lectures, private conversations, journal entries, and an oral history—with supplementary footage licensed from the studios or acquired through research." Susan needs to raise $35 000 by January 2nd, so, if you're able, give generously (it's tax deductible!) so we can see this project realized. The Locarno Film Festival announced its 2013 edition will feature a complete retrospective of the films of George Cukor. They also announced their lineup of programmers, which features Cinema Scope editor/publisher Mark Peranson as the head of programming. An archive of Andrei Tarkovsky's personal photographs, letters and other items are going up for auction. According to The Guardian:

"The archive is being sold by Olga Surkova, who was Tarkovsky's pupil, amanuensis and friend as well as co-author of the book Sculpting in Time, in which the director sets out his theories on cinema....In the sale are notebooks with shot-by-shot analysis of his films; printed scripts for films, containing significant differences to the final versions; and a collection of 32 audio tapes and 13 MiniDiscs from his final years on which he talks about his films and cinema.

There are photo albums of Tarkovsky and his family on holiday in places...

Heaven's Gate has been re-cut and restored thanks to Michael Cimino and The Criterion Collection. In The New York Times, Dennis Lim writes about the film's notoriety and resurgence, as well as Cimino's take on things after its recent screening in Manhattan:

"Onstage here Mr. Cimino was candid about the psychic toll of Heaven’s Gate. 'I’ve had enough rejection for 33 years,' he said.
