Balding, usually bespectacled American character actor who came to films via the Yiddish Art Theater and Broadway (debut 1937). He also appeared in films and on TV from the 1950s, invariably as underhanded, officious, or corrupt types. He was also extremely adept at playing any ethnicity: Mexicans, Czechs, Italians, etc.
