Stars: Carole Lombard, William Powell, Gail Patrick, Eugene Pallette, Alice Brady | Written by Eric Hatch, Morrie Ryskind | Directed by Gregory La Cava
The fate of the stars of this socially-conscious screwball comedy, directed by former animator Gregory La Cava in 1936, couldn’t be more different. Carole Lombard was cruelly cut off in her prime, dying in a plane crash at the age of 33, while William Powell led a remarkably long life, marrying three times and beating cancer, before passing in 1984.
They show great chemistry in La Cava’s darkly comic fable. The rich WASPs of New York engage in a “Scavenger Hunt”, getting wasted and hunting down things no one else wants. This includes Godfrey (Powell), a homeless man living on a trash heap. He spurns the condescending Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick), but when her sister Irene (Lombard) takes an interest, he lets her take him back to the party,...

For my money this is the brightest, most endearing and wittiest ’30s comedy to be given the name ‘screwball.’ Everyone on screen is flawlessly magnificent — Carole Lombard, William Powell, Alice Brady, Gail Patrick, Jean Dixon, Eugene Pallette and Mischa Auer — and Gregory La Cava’s direction is so good, it’s invisible. No kidding, I’ve never watched this with a group or individual that didn’t immediately rank it among the best entertainments they’ve seen.

They’re non-corporeal cut-ups, rich ghosts on the town with nothing better to do than spice up the love life of Roland Young’s harried, henpecked bank president. Hal Roach’s screwball hit did good things for everybody concerned, especially star Cary Grant and bit player Arthur Lake. But the show’s nostalgic heart is Billie Burke, of the tinkly-glass voice. Also starring platinum blonde Constance Bennett, Alan Mowbray and Eugene Pallette.

Carole Lombard Best remembered for her light comedies of the '30s and early '40s, Carole Lombard is Turner Classic Movies Star of the Day on Sunday, August 28, as TCM's continues its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any hard-to-find Carole Lombard movies. So, don't expect Swing High, Swing Low; We're Not Dressing; the eminently dreadful (and compulsively watchable) White Woman; I Take This Woman; Up Pops the Devil; It Pays to Advertise, Power, etc. [Carole Lombard Movie Schedule.] Having said that, TCM did show the lesser-known Virtue (1932) and Brief Moment (1933) earlier today, and will be showing The Racketeer (1929) later this evening. Directed by the all but completely forgotten Howard Higgin, The Racketeer is a crime melodrama that features future King Kong semi-villain Robert Armstrong. Chances are The Racketeer will turn out to be nothing more than a historical curiosity — but that's not a bad thing at all. First,...

10– A Serious Man (18 Points)
Directed by Ethan Coen & Joel Coen
Blending dark humor with profoundly personal themes, The Coen Brothers deliver their most intimate film yet. Expanding upon some of the themes they’ve played with in the past, the film deals with everything from man’s search for meaning, the existence of God, pattern and randomness in the Universe, and the essential solitude of the human condition. Euphoric, extremely funny, deeply serious, sad, troubling, warm and thoughtful. The Coens have finished the decade as America’s pre-eminent film-makers.
9- Kynodontas (Dogtooth) (19 Points)
Directed by Giorgos Lanthimos
Infused with its own brand of hyper-stylized realism, Dogtooth feels so out of this world that it is quite impossible to pin down. The winner of the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Dogtooth is so twisted and weird that the absurd comedy found in the films of Todd Solondz seems relatively lucid.

Growing up watching the same three films over and over (Ghostbusters, The Goonies and Annie), Eric Hatch discovered that a whole new world of film was waiting to be watched after viewing Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. He then watched every Hitchcock film and branched off to other classic suspense films, later discovering Swedish films and, his personal favorite, horror. At the age of 15, Eric knew that his future was destined to be film related. He attended Dawson College and studied Cinema and Communications under the impression that he was going to become a successful film producer. After studying film for three years at Concordia University, Eric decided to combine his passion for film with journalism, with the hopes to beginning his own film related magazine or radio show. Now, Eric is an aspiring journalist, studying in Concordia's Journalism Graduate Program and is proud to be a member of Sound on Sight.

Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone and Diane Lane, was a commercial and critical flop back in 1995. Now, nearly 15 years later, it seems that a reboot for the film is in the works. Screenwriter Alex Garland, known for 28 Days Later and Sunshine, has apparently written a script. The report came in from comic book artist Mark Simpson via Twitter. Simpson also stated that he is working on concept art for the film. DNA films, the production company behind 28 Days Later and Sunshine, is said to be working with 2000 Ad, the original publishing company for the Judge Dredd comic books. With the given information, fans can only hope that Danny Boyle will sign on to direct. Eric Hatch...

It seems that director Paul W.S. Anderson is finally throwing in the towel and trying something new. It has been reported through the Hollywood Reported that Anderson along with screenwriter Andrew Davis (who penned the Bridget Jones films) are writing a script for a new Three Musketeers adaptation. Anderson, who directed such films as Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator, has admitted that the film will be shot in 3D and that the original story will be modernized. Anderson even promises “eye-popping action, romance and adventure.” A period action-adventure will be new for Anderson who has mainly situated his films in the science-fiction and martial-arts/action genres. Michael J. Fox, better known for his days as Alex Keaton on 'Family Ties' and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, starred in a small film in 1985 called Teen Wolf, a film about a high school basketball player who turns into a werewolf during his “transition” through puberty. Nearly 25 years later, MTV has announced that a television series, based on the film, is in the works. Last January, the network announced the project as part of a development slate. After a script was written, MTV asked for a pilot to be produced. With popular shows as 'The Hills' and 'Laguna Beach' gaining most of the network's audiences, MTV's version of 'Teen Wolf' will be “very different from the original” says senior VP Liz Gateley. The series will be set in high school, draw more from the horror genre by exploring werewolf...

Although the previews for Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 mentioned it was the “final chapter” of the series, there is already word that a third Halloween film will be produced and released for summer 2010. Many critics find this strange as H2 did not do well at the box-office last weekend, making only $17 million and being beaten out by The Final Destination 3D and Inglourious Basterds. Rumor has it that the next installment will be created using 3D technology, much like H2's nemesis Final Destination. In addition, the film is rumored to be directed by Steve Minor, the director of the original Halloween series Halloween H2O (in addition to other horror films such as Friday the 13th Part 2 and Part 3). However, true Halloween fans could be anticipating something completely new with a third installment. Many will remember that the original Halloween series did not have a 'traditional' third installment...

The project in development has set Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel to direct. An official press release has yet to have been confirmed, but according to IMDb, the film is set for a 2010 release. The film follows a murdered circus tightrope walker who comes back as an entity and has the ability to inhabit other people's bodies to help him find his killer. This will be DC's third comic book adaptation since Watchmen, alongside 2010's Jonah Hex, starring Megan Fox, and 2011's The Green Lantern. Eric Hatch...

September marks the two year anniversary of Sound On Sight Radio. After 150 episodes we've reviewed an estimated 900 films and covered several film festivals, including our personal favorite, Fantasia. As well, we have had the chance to do press work for the Festival Nouveau Cinema, Toronto After Dark and most recently added to our list is the Toronto International Film Festival. It's safe to say that in the history of film review shows, S.O.S. is most likely the unluckiest of them all. From the first day we have had nothing but a string of bad luck. It started with a changeover in program directors over at Cjlo creating a miscommunication that resulted in Sound On Sight (than called The Naked Lunch) without an actual simeslot. We were than offered a slot on a different day but unfortunately my co-host-to-be (Dan Maxham) was not available at the time, thus leaving...

On Monday morning, The Walt Disney Company announced that they have purchased Marvel Entertainment Group for $4 billion in Us stocks and cash. This deal will give Disney full ownership of over 5,000 Marvel characters, including Daredevil, Spider-Man and the X-Men clan. This is Disney's largest acquisition since it bought Pixar Animation Studios in 2006. Disney reported that Marvel shareholders will receive $30 per share in addition to 0.745 of shares from Disney for every Marvel share they own. All shares will be received in cash. This move shows a great amount of confidence on Disney's part, particularly when the company is making major changes in regards to more recent productions in digital media. Marvel Chief Executive Ike Perlmutter will continue to oversee Marvel. The company earned a net revenue of roughly $200 million last year, up 47 per cent from 2007. Eric Hatch...

In the screen-writers chair is David Keopp, long time Spielberg and Crichton collaborator, who all worked on Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Set in mid-1600, Pirate Latitudes follows a band of pirates who plan to infiltrate Port Royal, Jamaica one of the world’s richest cities. Crichton completed this epic tale before his untimely death last November. This is the first major film deal DreamWorks has developed since teaming up with Reliance Entertainment. Eric Hatch...

This is definitely the week for Rob Zombie fans to come together and celebrate their favorite singer/writer/director/producer. With Halloween 2 hitting theaters this Friday, Rob Zombie is yet again signing on to direct another remake. According to Variety Magazine [1], Zombie will write, produce and direct a remake of the 1958 horror flick The Blob. Zombie intends to “make it scary” and completely change the look of the all-too-familiar-jelly-like blob. It “might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now” said Zombie. It is rumored that the remake will be supported with a $30 million budget, similar to the budget of the recent blockbuster hit District 9. Zombie plans on getting the project rolling after his new album release and tour this fall. Eric Hatch [1] http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118007857.html?categoryid=13&cs=1...

It has been confirmed that Brice Willis will be joining fellow action icons Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables. The film, slated for a 2010 release, is based on a group of mercenaries who are trying to take out an evil South African dictator and shot like your typical 80’s-style action flick. Directed by Stallone, the film is set to pay homage to the action flicks we all know and love. Already with an impressive cast, including Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts, Stallone has been working hard on his balls-out action flick for the past couple of months. This is the first film of a three-picture contract Stallone has signed to do with Universal. His next film is rumored to be another Rambo sequel. Yesterday, blog website MarketSaw, specializing in information for 3D videogames and movies, said that the next much anticipated Tolkien adaptation, The Hobbit, will now be produced as a trilogy. Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro has already signed on to direct The Hobbit series, which was confirmed as a two-film deal with New Line Cinema back in 2008. But it is now rumored that the Lotr director himself, Peter Jackson, will be directing a third movie that will bridge The Hobbit to the original Lotr movie series. In addition to trilogy news, the website is stating that the series will also be shot in 3D. Although the source seems vague, fans are already vocalizing their opinions, saying that 3D will not live up to the same Middle Earth that was brought forward with Lort and will be, in all senses, pointless. In addition, to create a film to simply link...

District 9 Directed by Neill Blomkamp Produced by Peter Jackson It can be debated whether the quintessential science fiction film has stood the test of time, but when it comes to aliens, they stand as a genre all on their own. The seventies brought us Alien (1979), the eighties brought us E.T. (1982) and the nineties brought us, well, Independence Day (1996) (no matter how cool he is, Jeff Goldblum will always look alien-like). However, in recent years the alien film has somehow become a carbon copy remake of past classics, only with better special effects (i.e. War of the Worlds (2005), Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) and so on). If audiences want to see an original alien picture, the only option they have nowadays is to see the newest animated family flick. But alien lovers, rejoice! District 9 is what we’ve been waiting for. While traveling to Earth, an extraterrestrial spaceship...
