The biopic has been a genre around since the early days of filmmaking, and over the course of more than 100 hundred years, it has changed drastically with every passing decade. In the early 2000s the genre, in particular the musical biopic, hit somewhat of a snag. It got caught up in formulaic storytelling and became a parody of itself. So much so that the 2007 film Walk Hard, made fun of the formula so much it ruined the genre forever. However, some films still missed the joke and went ahead and followed the formula anyway, such as 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The formula itself reduced the artist’s life to their Wikipedia page. Timothée Chalamet sings Dylan, and grumps just like him too in the new official trailer for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Charting the West Village era of the great Dylan’s rise to international fame, the clip hits all the high points of the near-mythological story: The arrival from Minnesota, the early romance, the flirtation with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), the run-in with Newport Folkies angered over his gone electric move.
And we get to hear some clips, with Chalamet doing a decent Dylan, at first on the gentle “Girl From The North Country” and then on the rollicking “Like A Rolling Stone.”

The majority of Junji Itō adaptations are underseen or simply unknown. The sheer amount may also come as a surprise. The peak of movies based on the horror mangaka’s works was during the “J-Horror” wave; The Ring (1998) signaled a sea change in Japanese horror, and studios were looking everywhere for inspiration. Unfortunately, Itō is not the easiest of source materials. His stories and illustrations are surreal and visceral, and translating all of that into moving images is, to say the least, challenging.
Two years after living-dead girl Tomie made the leap to the big screen in 1998, Uzumaki was brought to life. The movie, which was put on a double-bill with Tomie: Replay, served as Akihiro “Higuchinsky” Higuchi’s feature debut. And so far in the cinematic collective derived from Itō’s oeuvre, Uzumaki is one of the most competent. Other adaptations have been partly inspired by their basis; they...

The movie: "Uzumaki"
Where you can stream it: Prime Video
The pitch: Imagine if there was something like a deadly virus that made people become obsessed with spirals, to the point that they will do anything to either become part of a spiral or get as far removed from them as possible. "Uzumaki" is the directorial debut of Ukrainian-born director Higuchinsky, based on the acclaimed manga by master of horror Junji Ito, and it is a film unlike any other. It's low-budget, it's grainy, and it's absolutely bizarre, but it's also a fascinating take on the work of one of the greatest visual minds in all of horror.
"Uzumaki," which translates to "spiral," follows Kirie (Eriko Hatsune) and Shuichi (Fhi Fan), a pair of teens in a small town in Japan who start noticing strange happenings around them. Shuichi's father, Toshio (Ren Ôsugi) becomes obsessed with snails and anything that...

In the early 2000s, when the era of J-horror was reaching its peak, there were already many features which changed the formula or diverted from the tropes of a genre which, by that time, had become a little too predictable. Whereas the works of Kiyoshi Kurosawa had been known for their uniqueness, showing strange worlds and characters instead of being “only” horror movies, there were also odd entries such as “Uzumaki, directed by Akihiro Higuchi, better known as Higuchinsky. With regard to the original manga by Junji Ito, the director explained how he was much more interested in the changed the uzumaki (“spiral”) ignited in people and places, turning a familiar environment into something quite strange and weird, which is precisely the atmosphere we wanted to capture in his adaption. As a result, “Uzumaki” is a true oddity within J-horror, with a focus on atmosphere rather than scares, making it...

Lost star Matthew Fox heads back to World War II for his latest film, the historical drama Emperor.
Fox plays Bonner Fellers, a general who's sent to Japan to decide if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged for war crimes.
Starring alongside him is Eriko Hatsune as Aya Shimada, a woman Fellers romanced years earlier, and Tommy Lee Jones as legendary Us military figure General Douglas MacArthur.
Fox said that he was "really moved" by the script for Peter Webber's film, and found that the true life story was one worthy of big-screen treatment.
On working with Jones, the actor told Digital Spy: "Tommy came on at the very end of the shoot for the last two weeks.

★★☆☆☆ World wars and their subsequent fallout are topics cinema loves revisiting. Directed by Peter Webber and set in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, Emperor (2012) centres on the efforts of military intelligence head Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) - under orders from General MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) - to investigate Emperor Hirohito's (Takatarô Kataoka) culpability for Japan's war crimes. Although he has a strict ten-day deadline to adhere to, Fellers' focus is distracted by memories of his past romance with Japanese exchange student Aya Shimada (Eriko Hatsune), whose whereabouts are unknown.
It's a beautifully shot picture; post-war, Tokyo has been reduced to a barren wasteland, the emperor's palace the only building of opulence that remains. Contrastingly, when we glimpse Japan through Fellers' flashbacks, Webber showcases the country's beauty. This, as well as the strict adherence to the native language and culture (the differing ideas of honour theme is prevalent...

Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones just about pull this flair-free film about Hirohito through
At the close of the second world war, General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox, looking like a peeved Luke Wilson) arrives in Japan at the behest of General MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) to settle a vexing question: should Emperor Hirohito be put to death as a war criminal, thereby condemning the nation which reveres him to a chaotic future, or would it be more expedient to let him live exonerated? "If you understand devotion, you will understand Japan," mutters Fellers. He knows whereof he speaks: whenever he recalls the Japanese schoolteacher (Eriko Hatsune) he met prior to the war, he experiences that medicated look that heralds another idyllic flashback. Emperor is dutiful, patient and almost entirely without flair. The leads just about pull it through. Fox is suitably grave, while Jones waltzes off with a handful of juicy scenes,...

It’s always fascinating to find a certain facet to World War 2 and delve into it, as although the War has been covered so extensively in film, Peter Webber’s Emperor proves there are always areas left untouched and inspiring stories not yet told. The forthcoming Colin Firth title The Railway Man proves a similar point, as two films that look into the conflicting politics concerning the Japanese army during such a time.
Taking place in the final stages of the Second World War, there’s an intense and ambivalent atmosphere as the Japanese surrender, as the future of Emperor Hirohito (Takatarô Kataoka) lies in the balance, as he potentially faces the death penalty for war crimes. Supreme Commander of the occupying forces, General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones), leaves the decision of whether the Emperor will be trialled with General Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox), a Japanese expert, who sets off to undertake his research,...

The first full trailer for Japan's live-action adaptation of the anime series Gatchaman has been released! The original series was produced in Japan in 1972 and was eventually brought to the states in the '80s and retitled Battle of the Planets. A few years ago a CG animated adaptation of the series was being developed by the animation studio Imagi, but when they went out of business the movie died, which is a shame.
I would have loved to see the animated film they were working on, but the live-action movie still looks cool, and I'm sure it will be really fun, especially for those of us who are fans of the original series. Here's the synopsis:
Set in the near future, Gatchaman follows the story five special agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo as they try to protect the world from the mysterious terrorist group who call themselves Galactor.

With technology that far surpasses that of humans, Galactor has declared war on the entire world and has already subjugated half of it. Director Peter Webber is a man of variety having directed horror in Hannibal Rising, a romantic drama in The Girl With The Pearl Earring, numerous TV movies, and now a historical drama in his upcoming film Emperor. Teaming up with the likes of Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox, I enjoyed how Webber was able to balance history and romance in a historical timeframe forgotten to cinema because there were no flashy battles or epic action pieces (which you can read in my review).
I recently had the opportunity to talk to Peter about his upcoming film Emperor, specifically about working with such a legendary presence as Tommy Lee Jones and the challenges of balancing Hollywood romantics with historical data, but we also explore his want to return to horror and what genre he’ll land in with his next film.
Check it out below.

As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture – and psychological warfare – General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Classroom Exercise: Webber’s Latest Historical Drama Dry and Sleepy
Arriving with all the subdued excitement of a vaguely written history textbook comes Peter Webber’s latest film, Emperor, which documents the true story of one man’s task to investigate Japan’s leader General Hirohito during America’s post World War II occupation under the control of General Douglas MacArthur. The task is to unveil just how responsible the Japanese leader was for reprehensible war crimes, the evidence to be used to decide how the Americans pardon or prosecute. While this sounds like a deliriously ripe scenario for intrigue and melodrama, Webber’s film contains neither, instead deciding to saddle it with a deadening war time romance, and rotating mechanically back and forth between a politically explosive scenario and lost love. While Webber is best known for his debut film, an adaptation of the novel The Girl With a Pearl Earring,...

Tommy Lee Jones is used to playing historical icons. Fresh off his Oscar-nominated performance as Thaddeus Stevens in "Lincoln," Jones plays Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the new film "Emperor."
Co-starring Matthew Fox ("Lost"), "Emperor" focuses on the moves made by the U.S. military in Japan after World War II to secure peace. In a new clip from the film, debuting exclusively on HuffPost Entertainment, Fox, who plays General Bonner Fellers, tries to convince Jones' MacArthur that evidence is overrated in the quest for the truth. Watch above. The official synopsis of "Emperor" is below:

Emperor
Directed by: Peter Webber
Starring: Matthew Fox, Tommy Lee Jones, Eriko Hatsune
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: March 8, 2013
Trailer Score: 6/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Is there still time to reshoot this so it’s entirely made up of Tommy Lee Jones smoking a corncob pipe? All of the best moments in this trailer are directly focused on Jones, whereas all the stuff with Matthew Fox pales in comparison. It’s not really Fox’s fault. I can think of few things that compare to Tommy Lee Jones gnawing on a corncob pipe while wearing aviators. Emperor provides us that satisfaction at least one time, so no matter what, we’ll always have something to look back on fondly.
Jones was born to deliver dialogue such as, “Let’s show them some good, old fashioned American swagger,” and he naturally sounds great doing it. I also love the way he says the trailer’s final lines,...

We were sent a handful of trailers last week, and sadly we weren't able to get them all posted...or any of them really. So to make up for it, I'm going to put the trailers we got for The Bible, Red 2, Lore, and Emperor all into one convenient spot for you. Oh and as a special bonus the first trailer for Olympus Has Fallen just dropped as well.
Let's kick things off with the first trailer for Olympus Has Fallen (which just landed today). If you haven't heard of this film yet, it's pretty much the result of Die Hard and Air Force One having an illegitimate child together...and I think that's a good thing.
Next up is the trailer for an upcoming indie film, Lore:

Here’s the first trailer for “Hannibal Rising” director Peter Webber’s latest, the post-World War II set “Emperor”, which finds Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones playing Generals in the aftermath of the war. This is apparently a true story. Or, well, true-ish whenever Hollywood is involved, let’s be honest here. Looks interesting. I’m always a sucker for historical tales about topics that I didn’t know anything about previously, and I certainly had no idea the U.S. Army was considering hanging Japan’s emperor for his role in WWII. As the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII, Gen. Fellers is tasked with deciding if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. Influencing his ruling is his quest to find Aya, an exchange student he met years earlier in the U.S. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Isao Natsuyagi, Matthew Fox, Kaori Momoi, Toshiyuki Nishida,...

An indie historic drama Emperor which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to a standing ovation, finally gets a full-length trailer. We only had a chance to see the short clip from a grand historical romance-drama of the kind too rarely seen these days.
Peter Webber’s film takes place in the immediate aftermath of World War II and stars Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers, an expert in Japanese culture assigned to assist General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) in investigating whether or not the beloved Japanese Emperor should be punished for war crimes.
And, despite Jones bankable presence in the trailer, this is a tale focused on Fox’s character and his investigation. The romance with the mysterious school teacher Aya (Eriko Hatsune) weaved into it. Emperor, scripted by Vera Blasi and David Klass (Kiss the Girls), also stars Kaori Momoi, Toshiyuki Nishida and Aaron Jackson.

"Let's show them some good old fashioned American swagger." Roadside Attractions has debuted the latest official Us trailer for Emperor, an indie historic drama starring Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox as two WWII Generals who travel to Japan just as the war is ending to decide if Emperor Hirohito will be hanged as a war criminal. Along the way, Japanese student Aya (Eriko Hatsune) gets into the mix.
