To mark the release of Creeping Horror on 17th April, we’ve been given a special edition Blu-ray to give away to 3 winners.
Four more tales of terror from the vaults of Universal Pictures, starring Lionel Atwill, Bela Lugosi, and Rondo Hatton.
A maniacal hunter and collector of wild animals uses them to dispose of rivals and enemies in the shockingly violent Murders in the Zoo (dir. A. Edward Sutherland, 1933). Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of “mind over matter” in Night Monster (dir. Ford Beebe, 1942).
What started out as a treasure-making scheme ends up deadly for a group of people stuck in a haunted castle with a killer known as “the Phantom” in Horror Island (dir. George Waggner, 1941). And finally, Rondo Hatton is “the Creeper”, a giant of a man used as an instrument of evil...

There’s a scene in “The Rocketeer,” Disney’s big budget would-be blockbuster from the summer of 1991, that ranks among the most profoundly strange and transfixing moments in the studio’s storied history.
The scene, which takes place in 1938, unfolds right before the movie’s big, fiery climax at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory. Our hero, L.A. stunt pilot-turned-makeshift-superhero Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) is in the office of Howard Hughes (a perfectly cast Terry O’Quinn). Hughes, it turns out, is the inventor of an experimental rocket pack that Secord has happened upon and utilized in a series of exciting action sequences. The FBI is there too. Hughes wants his rocket back, stressing how potentially dangerous it is, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Secord wants to keep it.
To underline his point, Hughes shows Secord a film. “Keep watching, kid. It cost a man’s life to get this out of Germany,...

Award-winning documentary Rondo and Bob, fixing on Texas Chain Saw Massacre art director Robert Burns and his obsession with cult actor Rondo Hatton, will be released on streaming platforms this June. Check out this trailer:
Robert A. “Bob” Burns is a significant name in horror film art direction for his work in the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Re-Animator, The Howling. His props also appear in Poltergeist. From a young age he showed signs of being a genius and could create complex designs all in his head, draw detailed cartoons and create outrageous puns. In high school and college he studied drama, which he later utilized in films including Confessions of a Serial Killer.
While attending the University of Texas he edited the Texas Ranger humor magazine and discovered Rondo Hatton, a former Tampa, Florida, sports reporter, who contracted acromegaly, a condition that caused his face,...

The Spider Woman Strikes Back
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1946/ B&w / 1.33:1 / 59 Minutes
Starring Gale Sondergaard, Brenda Joyce, Kirby Grant
Directed by Arthur Lubin
People are measured by the company they keep—in a superhero’s case, that company is usually the supervillain. Villains, besides giving the hero a reason to exist in the first place, can liven up the joint; a dam burst here, a toppled bridge there, chaos and special effects ensue, and the popcorn munchers are happy. Sherlock Holmes was one of the few heroes who was fun all by himself (due respect to Dr. Watson)—the detective’s obsessive-compulsive brilliance, his monkish lifestyle, and his fondness for beekeeping and cocaine were just some of his more endearing quirks.
The filmed versions of Conan Doyle’s most famous character—not a superhero but seemingly immortal—were not so concerned with Holmes’s idiosyncrasies. This was especially true...

When Kino Lorber announced in April 2021 that a Blu-ray of Universal’s The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946) was scheduled for issue in autumn I was, to put it mildly, over-joyed. It’s not that The Spider Woman Strikes Back is a great film – it most certainly is not – but it’s long been a missing entry on home video, a film of great interest to collectors of Golden Age horror. The studio has chosen, time and again, to re-master and re-offer the classic and iconic “Universal Monsters” in nearly every conceivable home video format and creative packaging. Too often these releases would be at the expense of the studios less famous genre titles as the still unissued Ghost Catchers (1944), and The Cat Creeps (1946).

Hello, dear readers! November is officially upon us, as well as a new week of Blu-ray and DVD releases, which means it’s time to make some room for more horror and sci-fi to fill your home entertainment shelves. One of this writer’s favorite indie genre movies of the year, Come True, is getting released to both Blu and DVD this week courtesy of Scream Factory, and Kino Lorber is showing some love to a pair of classic thrillers as well: The Spider Woman Strikes Back and The Mad Doctor. Other releases for November 2nd include The Banishing, Pig featuring Nicolas Cage, and The Spore.
The Banishing
From acclaimed genre director Chris Smith (Creep) comes the true story of the most haunted house in England. A young reverend, his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. When a vengeful spirit haunts the little girl and...

We are pleased to announce that Cinema Retro magazine has once again been nominated for Best Magazine by the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. (Rondo Hatton was the famed character actor who often played villains in "B" movies that are now cult favorites.) Although Cinema Retro differs from most of our worthy competitors because we are not strictly a horror-themed magazine, apparently we do cover the genre enough to impress the nominating group. It's a lot of fun participating in the awards which cover many other categories such as best film, best DVD/Blu-ray commentary, best DVD/Blu-ray extras, best restoration, etc. We'll put a blatant plug in for our own contributing writer, Tom Lisanti, whose biography of actress Carol Lynley has been justifiably nominated for Book of the Year. We're also proud of our London photographer and writer Mark Mawston, who has been nominated in the "Best Article" category...

Universal Horror Collection Volume 5
Blu ray
1943, 1944, 1945, 1941 / 61, 61, 63, 64 min.
Starring Ellen Drew, John Carradine, Acquanetta
Cinematography by George Robinson, Jack MacKenzie, Maury Gertsman, Victor Milner
Directed by Edward Dmytryk, Reginald Le Borg, Harold Young, Stuart Heisler
The Universal Horror Collection Volume 5 should appeal to ape suit fans everywhere—and spoiler alert—one of the films in the set is genuinely good, a lyrical genre-buster that is as inventive as it is poignant.
That movie, The Monster and the Girl, shares space with a trio of bottom-rung potboilers concerning the misadventures of Paula Dupree, a beautiful circus performer with the bad habit of changing into a monster—though she’s not “changing” so much as reverting to her true nature; Paula is a deracinated gorilla given human form by a not-so-mad doctor The statuesque Aquanetta plays Paula and, except for some grunts and growls in her ape state, her’s is a completely mute performance.

With so many folks out there looking for ways to keep themselves entertained at home right now, perhaps this new batch of home media releases might have something to offer you this week. If you missed it in theaters last year, the controversial Black Christmas remake hits both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a fourth volume in their Universal Horror Collection series, which looks like a must-own for all classic genre fans out there.
Also headed to Blu this week is The Nines, which is one of my favorite underseen films from Ryan Reynolds, as well as Cannibal Apocalypse, featuring John Saxon. We also have Glenn Danzig’s Verotika coming out on Tuesday and if you need something to keep the kiddos busy, Jumanji: The Next Level should do the trick.

Crypt of Curiosities: A Look Back at Universal’s Horror Films Featuring Rondo Hatton’s “The Creeper”
In the mid ’40s, the Universal Monsters were in a tough spot. Up until then, the ’40s had been a nonstop flow of sequels and one-offs, with an avalanche of Invisible Men, Draculas (Draculi?), and the odd Frozen Ghost here and there releasing at a steady clip. But this high release rate had made them stale, and by the time 1946 came around, the studio was in desperate need of a new, recognizable monster.
Enter Rondo Hatton. A journalist-turned-b-movie-bit-player, Hatton had been afflicted with acromegaly for most of his adult life, which enlarged his jaw and pronounced his forehead over the years. This distinctive appearance led to him being cast as nameless goons up until the ’40s, when he got his big, career-defining role as The Creeper.
Curiously, The Creeper’s first appearance wasn’t in a horror film at all. It was in The Pearl of Death (1944), one of the...

Don’t let the ugly Italian poster art on the disc box throw you — The Internecine Project is a clever plot-driven murder tale in an espionage vein that gathers a string of B+ stars from the early 1970s for ninety minutes of suspense. It’s not the kind of suspense that makes you wonder what’s going to happen next, but the kind that points to a finish that we know will employ a big surprise, a killer-diller last-minute twist. Or three.

We told you it was good! Son of Ghostman, the horror-themed comedy about two rival horror movie hosts, was recently named Best Independent Film by the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards Committee, and Kurt Edward Larsen, writer/director of Son of Ghostman, wants to celebrate.
We at Dread Central were lucky enough to be the recipients of an exclusive clip from Son of Ghostman (review), handpicked by Larsen, to share with you. It features Denny McNamara (played wonderfully by Devin Ordoyne) as the Son of Ghostman.
Enjoy the clip, Dreadies! And congrats to all those involved with the success of Son of Ghostman.
Written and directed by Kurt Larson, the film stars Larson himself as well as Devin Ordoyne and Angela Gulner.
Synopsis
Denny McNamara has been recently dumped, he’s unemployed, and his older brother, Harold, is threatening to sell the house Denny rents. By all accounts he’s a loser.

Reactions from the talent behind films eviscerated on MST3k have varied (it could be a joke, but the crew claims Joe Don Baker of Mitchell fame wants to take a swing at them), though not as much as fans of the films proper. A famous, though unverified, story has Dennis Miller flying the cast to a filming of his HBO show only to scream at them for having their way with Marooned! In light of the recent announcement that creator Joel Hodgson wants to reboot the cult favourite, here’s a look at a few episodes that may not have been playing fair.

Post-Oscars award blitz! (ps. Please, vote for us!)
The Rondo Awards — named for the iconically-faced B-movie actor Rondo Hatton — are in their tenth year. Sponsored by The Classic Horror Film Boards, the Rondos celebrate the best in classic horror (and classic horror fandom) and they cut a huge swath through fandom, awarding movies and television and magazines and websites and art. We’ve been honored with nominations a few times over the last few years, even winning a couple of these (Joe’s got a cool statue at his house to prove it).
And this year is no different! Our last DVD compilation — the Shout! Factory release of Trailers From Hell Vol 2 — has been nominated in the “Best Documentary” category and this very website has been nominated as The Best Website. (I’ll presume that’s “best website in the history of everything”, but, hey, you can presume otherwise if you want,...

Last year, as Alexander Payne was getting going on The Descendants, we got word that he was also planning an adaptation [1] of the graphic novel Wilson, by Ghost World and Art School Confidential creator Daniel Clowes. We haven't heard much about that project in a bit, but now Clowes says that the film is still in the works, and will be Payne's next film after the black and white father/son roadtrip movie Nebraska. While I wouldn't take the "next movie after Nebraska" idea as gospel, it is good to know the project isn't dead. Sadly, some other Clowes film projects are dead; we'll run down all the current status reports after the break. Vulture [2] has a good interview with Clowes, who says, I finished a draft [of Wilson], and everybody seems very happy about it. Alexander Payne was making another film that was all ready to go, Nebraska, and Wilson is next.

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly print newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! The newest issue takes place in 1946 and is available now. This issue contains articles by two writers from the We Are Movie Geeks staff. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, we will be posting any articles written by Movie Geeks here at We Are Movie Geeks.com.
This issue has my article Rondo Hatton, Hollywood’s Real Quasimodo. The on-line version of the article can be found Here. The new...

Films about mad artists have always been a personal favorite of mine. A basic list would include Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) , House of Horrors (1946) starring the late great Rondo Hatton, House of Wax (1953), Bucket of Blood (1959), and the recent hilarious horror comedy Murder Party (2007). Have fun making up your own list. To it, make sure to add Blood Bath (1966). This weird little number was produced, written and directed by none other than the late ?great? Jack Hill. Hill made schlock but I'll wager you have fond memories of a few of his titles, especially if you are over 40. The Wasp Woman (1960), The Terror (1963), Spider Baby (1968), The Snake People (1971), The Fear Chamber (1971)...
