Mark Rosman‘s The House on Sorority Row (1982) and Stewart Hendler‘s Sorority Row (2009) feel shoved aside in their respective horror classes. Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings.
It’s almost like Hendler attempted to shake the original’s mojo by deeming Sorority Row an adaptation of Rosman’s screenplay Seven Sisters — the earlier iteration of what would become The House on Sorority Row. Don’t mind the trickiness because Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger write their re-imagining indebted to The House on Sorority Row. Maybe late-2000s remake fatigue led to...

For several years now, two of the most financially successful film franchises have been the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Michael Bay’s Transformers series. Those films have cumulatively earned $10.2 billion and $3.8 billion, respectively. So one can’t really blame the folks over at Mattel and Dolphin Entertainment for hoping to combine the superhero storytelling of the former with the built-in appeal of a long-running toy line. Unfortunately, Max Steel reveals just how ill-conceived this approach is in telling an effective story.
Based on the Mattel toys (as well as the 2000 and 2013 animated series they inspired), the film stars Ben Winchell as Max McGrath, a teenage boy who soon begins experiencing dangerous energy bursts when he and his mother (Maria Bello) move back to his hometown, where tragedy occurred years earlier. Before long, the truth begins to unravel, and Max encounters a bizarre creature named Steel (voiced by Silicon Valley‘s...

“Max Steel” is a movie sprung from a children’s action figure: a slick Mattel toy from the late 1990s that varies in length, width and style, depending on which model you picked up. For any prospective viewers, this is perhaps the only fact you need to know upon entering Stewart Hendler’s 92-minute sci-fi journey. If reverence is what you have for Max Steel, then you’ll likely find some enjoyment in his three-dimensional transformation from miniature toy figure to overgrown teenage boy. As for the rest, Hendler (“Sorority Row”) offers up essentially nothing. Despite its sizable production costs,...

Max Steel hits theaters October 14th, and the new trailer offers up a film that feels, perhaps appropriately, like a throwback.
In an age when audiences find themselves forced into conflict over their response to the endless reboots, sequels of long-dead franchises, and adaptations that ultimately make no sense (because things like The Lego Movie come along and blow them away), Max Steel still might not be the toy you were expecting to see on the big screen.
There may be a lot of reasons for that, including the fact that the line of toys doesn’t seem to take up half an aisle at your local store, and that the original TV show came out in 2000 (with a direct-to-video movie coming out almost every year since, until the show’s reboot in 2013), but the name isn’t in heavy rotation on any of the channels your kids force you to watch.

Open Road Films and Mattel have released the first domestic trailer for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Max Steel. The movie is based on Mattle's action figure line and animated series from the late '90s/early 2000s. This latest trailer is a lot better than the last international trailer that was released about a week ago. That thing was a mess, but this one is cut together so much better. You actually get a sense of what is going on and what the film is about. That being said, I'm still not sold on Max Steel. That first trailer left a bad taste in my mouth. I need to see more.
I have hope that it will be good, though, mostly because the script was written by Christopher Yost. He is the screenwriter of films such as Hulk Vs., Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok. I've also enjoyed his work on X-Men: Evolution,...

Mattel action figure and superhero Max Steel gets his first feature film this year. Here's the first trailer to prove it...
If such disparate movies as Robosapien, Battleship and Jem And The Holograms have anything in common, it's that they all prove that not every movie based on a toy or board game can be a roaring success like Michael Bay's Transformers franchise. Bay's robot action movies may be bullet-proof when it comes to reviews, but audiences don't always turn out in huge numbers to see a film based on a familiar name.
This might explain why, following a development period which began way back in 2009, the marketing for Max Steel feels rather apologetic. Based on Mattel's 90s line of action figures, the movie's an origin story about Max McGrath (Ben Winchell), a young man with extraordinary powers of speed and strength.

"Protect him. He's the only thing that matters." Originally scheduled for release in 2015, this latest sci-fi toy adaptation is now arriving in theaters October 2016. The first international trailer from Japan has arrived online for the Max Steel movie, about the adventures of teenager Max McGrath, played by Ben Winchell, and his alien companion Steel. The film also features Josh Brener, Ana Villafane, Andy Garcia, Maria Bello and Mike Doyle. Since this trailer isn't cut for Us audiences, it seems a bit jittery, jumping right into the action and showing some of the more sci-fi heavy scenes without much context. It looks like he merges with this alien thing to become "Max Steel", and must fight off the bad guys after them. Doesn't look so bad. Sneak Peek images from the upcoming "Max Steel" feature film, based on the Mattel action figure line, directed by Stewart Hendler, starring Ben Winchell, Maria Bello, Andy Garcia and Mike Doyle, opening August 26, 2016:
"It’s very much designed to be grounded within the teen experience," said Hendler about the new film:
"'Max Steel' is an origin story following 'Max McGrath' who suddenly begins generating massive energy bursts from his body. Max meets a 'techno-organic' alien named 'Steel' and the two form a symbiotic bond that keeps their individual energies under control..."
"Neither of them can live without the other," said Hendler, "and they drive each other crazy. But when they work together, they can actually be something cool..."
Created internally by Mattel, the "Max Steel" franchise spans multi-platform entertainment, toys and consumer products.
The Max Steel line of action figures produced by Mattel initially sought to emulate Hasbro's original 12-inch 'G.

In this age of blockbuster superhero adaptations like Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s refreshing to see a movie in the genre with a little more modest ambitions. The flick follows a teen whose extraordinary abilities begin to manifest themselves during puberty. With the help of an alien lifeform, he transforms into a superhero named Max Steel and quickly becomes the world’s last hope against forces of incredible power.

If The Lego Movie, Transformers and G.I. Joe just isn't enough toy based movies for your kids to enjoy, then you're probably in the mood for Max Steel. The first photos from the film based on the toy and animated series of the same name have arrived showing off Ben Winchell as Max McGrath, a teenage boy who learns he has hidden powers that when combined with an extraterrestrial friend named Steel, (see, it's the title!) produce the universe's most powerful energy. Andy Garcia and Maria Bello also star in the film, because everyone needs a paycheck. This looks pretty cheesy, and likely just for kids, but they don't really make films like this just for the young ones anymore, so maybe it'll be fun for them. Photos below! Here's the first set of photos for Stewart Hendler's Max Steel adaptation, originally from Moviefone: Max Steel is directed...

Looks like Mattel has been paying attention to what Hasbro has done with its Transformers and G.I. Joe toys- turning them into multi-million dollar movie franchises- and it wants a piece of the pie. We all ready know that they're trying to get a new adaptation of Masters of The Universe off the ground, featuring He-Man and his friends, but now they're also trying to get something going with their Max Steel character. After an ambitious relaunch in 2013, turning the toy into a multi-platform brand with games, merchandise, and publishing, they got the ball rolling on a feature film. They hired Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) to write it, and they've got Stewart Hendler in the director's chair. Now word has come out that they've landed Andy Garcia.
Variety is reporting that the veteran Cuban actor has been tapped to play a scientist in the film- which will star Ben Winchell and Ana Villafane.

Back in April, Dolphin Entertainment and Mattel announced that a live-action, feature-length film based on Mattel's Max Steel property was back in the works after the previous attempt (apparently with Twilight actor Taylor Lautner attached) went belly up. We know that Christopher Yost wrote the script and that Stewart Hendler will direct, but now The Tracking Board reckon the following actors are testing for the male and female lead roles. Noah Silver (The Borgias), Ben Winchell (Necessary Roughness) and Dylan Minnette (Prisoners, Lost) are testing to play Max. For the undisclosed female role there's Skyler Day (Parenthood, Ironside) and Skyler Samuels (The Nine Lives of Chloe King, The Gates). The story follows a teenager named Max, who gets imbued with an energy power called Turbo (Tachyon Unlimited Radiant Bio-Optimized) and is then partnered with Steel, a technological alien.
