Una Stubbs, beloved actor on television shows like “Sherlock,” “Worzel Gummidge,” “Till Death Us Do Part” and “EastEnders,” has died aged 84.
She died at her home in Edinburgh surrounded by her family, her agent Rebecca Blond said. She had been ill for a few months, the agent told BBC News.
“We are desperately sad to have lost not only a wonderful actress, whose screen and stage career, spanning over 50 years, was so extraordinarily varied, from ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ to ‘Sherlock,’ as well as memorable performances in the West End, at the Old Vic, Donmar Warehouse, Sheffield Crucible and National Theatre, but also a wickedly funny, elegant, stylish, graceful, gracious and kind and constant friend,” Blond said.
Stubbs debuted with TV show “Rush Hour” in 1958. Her last major role was playing Sherlock Holmes’ landlady Mrs Hudson in BBC series “Sherlock” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

Una Stubbs, the English actress who played Mrs. Hudson in Sherlock to cap a half-century career in TV, theater and film, died today following an illness, her agent confirmed to Deadline. She was 84.
“Mum passed away quietly today with her family around her, in Edinburgh. We ask for privacy and understanding at this most difficult and sad of times,” a statement from the family read.
Stubbs was a stalwart of British TV and stage for six decades, breaking through in the 1960s with the film Summer Holiday, which starred Cliff Richard, before she landed the role of Rita Rawlings in the long-running sitcom Till Death Do Us Part; she also starred in the 1968 film of the same name. Stubbs also appeared with Richard and the Shadows in 1964’s Swingers’ Paradise.
Stubbs would go on to appear in Worzel Gummidge, The Worst Witch, Call The Midwife and many more series before portraying Mrs.

Everything I knew about British culture as a kid I learned from TV. Canada has always been inundated with programming from our Commonwealth pal; Monty Python, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnies, et al paraded before my eyes but nary a horror. And then I discovered the Amicus and Hammer films; worlds unto themselves for exploration. While I’m still knee deep in cleavage and cobwebs, I’m compelled to check out the indie scene; and I happened to come across Psychomania (1973): a well known to some, unknown to many, and now beloved by me Occult Biker film that is absurd as it is entertaining.
Absurdity really is the prominent compound in this heady mash of free spirits and (un)deader ones; the mix of motorcycle mayhem with splashes of Satan works better than it should. That’s probably (at least partly) because the lower budget makes for lower stakes...

The idea of subliminal messages in the media or used as a weapon have always been the thing of the paranoid mind. There is a possibility of course that they are real, and we are all being controlled. The Holly Kane Experiment is a movie that looks at the possibility of a successful method for subliminal messaging being created, then used for a very dark reason.
Holly Kane (Kirsty Averton) is a psychologist looking for funding for her experimentation into reprogramming the subconscious mind. When she finds herself on the wrong end of a malpractice suit she finds herself agreeing to work for Marvin Greenslade (Nicky Henson), whose funding leads her down a path where she begins to worry about her own sanity,...

Psychomania tells of a group of n’er-do-well teens, led by a rich and mean-spirited young man, who skip school, ride motorcycles, and cause trouble and general panic wherever they go. They dub themselves The Living Dead and enjoy causing death and chaos at nearly every turn. However, if things seem bad in the little English village in which they reside, they take a decided turn for the worse when Tom Latham (Nicky Henson) discovers his psychic mother and the mysterious butler Shadwell (George Sanders) harbor a shocking secret—the key to life after death.
It seems that Mrs. Latham (Beryl Reid) and her husband made a long-ago deal with the devil for immortality. The couple committed suicide only to come back from the dead. Unfortunately, the late Mr. Latham found out he wasn’t a true believer and never made it back across. But Mrs.

Fancy some horror? We've been taking a look at the discs of Ghoulies, The Burning, Psychomania and more...
“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

Not that frogs themselves are inherently evil, though viewing this classic dose of seventies green-themed nastiness might convince you otherwise. Slugs are Ok, too, though we’ll get on to them later on in this month’s vague...

The Death Wheelers are coming to the UK! Well, they are coming to Blu-ray / DVD in the UK, anyway. Don Sharp’s PsychoMania aka The Death Wheelers (1973) follows Tom, a motorcycle gang leader, who kills himself and is successfully resurrected from the dead by his mother and a very knowledgeable cult. Psychomania will be released via the British Film Institute (BFI) on Blu-ray / DVD in the UK on September 19th:
From Blu-ray.com: “Look Out! The Living Dead motorcycle gang is on the rampage, wreaking havoc in their small English town. For gang leader Tom (Nicky Henson), however, mere earthly violence is not enough: he’s obsessed with the occult and is convinced that he can kill himself and then return from the dead – with the help of a frog-worshipping cult and his seance-conducting mother (Beryl Reid). Remarkably, Tom succeeds and soon joins the ranks of the walking – and riding – dead!

Neil Morrissey is starring in series two of ITV's period drama Grantchester.
The actor will appear alongside James Norton and Robson Green, who star as clergyman Sidney Chambers and police inspector Geordie Keating investigating crimes in the 1950s-set village.
Morrissey will play Harding Redmond, the father of teenage girl Abigail (Grace Holley) who is found dead in Grantchester under suspicious circumstances.
He accuses Chambers of having an inappropriate relationship with his daughter - forcing the clergyman to both investigate the girl's murder and clear his name.
But is it too late to save his reputation amongst the residents of Grantchester?
Morrissey said of his new role: "I'm really excited to be joining the cast of Grantchester. It's great to work with James Norton, Robson Green and the rest of the cast, and I can't wait to film in the actual village of Grantchester, which I know is beautiful.

Downton Abbey returned from last season’s tear fest with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) still recovering from Matthew’s (Dan Stevens) fatal celebratory drive after the birth of their firstborn son.
'Downton Abbey' Recap
Upstairs, Isobel (Penelope Wilton), like Mary, grieves for Matthew. Robert (Hugh Bonneville), however, seems almost glad that Mary’s husband and potential future head of the English estate is out of the picture. His wife Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), meanwhile, is preoccupied with finding a new maid in light of O’Brien’s (Siobhan Finneran) departure to India with Lady Flintshire.
In the servants’ area downstairs there’s still trouble brewing in the four-pointed love story involving Alfred (Matt Milne), Ivy (Cara Theobold), Jimmy (Ed Speleers) and Daisy (Sophie McShera). Thomas (Rob James-Collier) has made it his mission to drum up as much drama between the foursome as possible, causing concern for Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol). Meanwhile,...

Truth Of Dare
Stars: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Jason Maza, Tom Kane, David Oakes | Written by Matthew McGuchan | Directed by Robert Heath
I find with British horror, especially films with smaller budgets there is a tendency to stick to the mainstream idea of what is popular. Set up an injustice at in the first few minutes of the film then have a character come back for revenge. Its cliché, it’s over used and to be quite honest it’s boring. The ironic thing is though there is always a hidden gem that manages to shine through, down to some clever writing and actor choices. This is what you get with Truth or Dare.

*here be minor spoilers. Director: Robert Heath. Writer: Matthew McGuchan. Cast: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Tom Kane, Jason Maza, and David Oakes. Truth or Dare is a revenge thriller created by director Robert Heath. Heath recently completed another dramatic thriller titled Sus in 2010. Heath has cast a wide range of actors for his latest. Arguably, Jennie Jacques (Shank) and television actor David Oakes have the most acting experience. Eleanour (Jacques) and Justin (Oakes) are also coincidentally the two main villains in this picture with Felix (Tom Kane) acting as a quiet and shy protagonist. Truth or Dare transitions from a revenge thriller into a gory horror picture thanks to a few twists along the way. And, this film is an enjoyable watch despite a few awkward scenes. The film's story is set up much like a trap in the first act. Justin invites several...

Since Una Stubbs's film debut half a century ago, she's never been out of work. With a string of memorable TV series to her name, from Till Death Do Us Part to Sherlock, how does she feel now about her return to the National theatre stage at 75?
Una Stubbs can't quite believe she's being interviewed. "So who else are you speaking to from this production?" she asks when we meet backstage at the National Theatre. No one, I tell her. Just you. Behind her round-framed spectacles, Stubbs's eyes widen anxiously. "Oh," she says, brow crinkling. "Really?"
You might expect Una Stubbs to be more convinced by her own reputation. At 75, she has starred in some of the most memorable television programmes of the past four decades (Till Death Us Do Part, Give Us a Clue, Worzel Gummidge, Sherlock) and been directed on stage by such theatrical luminaries as Sir Peter Hall and Michael Grandage.

From director Robert Heath comes a new horror/thriller called Truth Or Dare. The film’s first still has been officially released, while not revealing much it certainly has my attention. The film stars David Oakes, David Sterne, Jason Maza, Jennie Jacques, Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Nicky Henson and Alexander Vlahos.
Official Synopsis: Five teenage friends are taken hostage by a vengeful psychopath and forced to play a party game with life-or-death consequences. This is the review for Blitz on Pure Movies. The film is directed by Elliott Lester and starring Jason Statham (The Expendables, Snatch, The Transporter), David Morrissey (Centurion, Nowhere Boy), Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe, Robin Hood), Aidan Gillen (The Wire, Twelve Rounds), Paddy Considine (Submarine, The Bourne Ultimatum), Richard Riddell, Chris Wilson, Nicky Henson, Elly Fairman and Taya De La Cruz. Ah, the gritty underbelly of South-East London, where every copper is as mean as Jason Statham, every traditional pub has a man with a dog (or two), and every corner has a loony lurking in its shadows. Nathan Parker’s (Moon) adaptation of Ken Bruen’s novel, Blitz, couldn’t get more clichéd if it was a Guy Ritchie crime caper. Thankfully, there’s no cringeworthy ‘apples and pears’ Mockney slang in this – apart from the odd Statham muttering, and the ‘good’ side of the law looks as much...

It's a strange one, is Don Sharp's Psychomania. The 1972 undead biker gang picture is a celebration of fuzzy (read: non existent) logic, aimless youth, random acts of violence and magic toads.
Nicky Henson stars as Tom. Leader of The Living Dead, a leather clad gang of young bikers who race around town - and the local circle of druid era standing stones - in their skull painted helmets. They are your typical disaffected youth, rebelling against everything seemingly just to relieve the boredom. But Tom's not satisfied with just terrorizing the locals for a few days here and there. He wants more. He wants to do it Forever.
Lucky for him Tom's mother is an gifted medium with a magic toad and the key to eternal life. And after being tested in a magic room - a room that killed his father years before - and found worthy Tom is given the secret.

You know we are nearing the end of October when the pace of horror DVD title releases starts slowing down. I guess the powers that be banked on everyone buying horror DVDs several weeks before Halloween. Is that true? Are you folks doing just that, or are you only now starting your Halloween viewing party planning?
Anyway, while this week's bounty includes monsters in the water and in the sky, with mostly direct-to-dvd, TV movies and old re-releases, the juggernaut monster is the one in space with a complete set in one neat package.

A new Doctor Who audio adventure is available, continuing the travels of the Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor. Millions of years ago, the noble Ice Warriors fled to Deimos, moon of Mars, hoping to sit out the radioactive death throes of their home planet. Nothing says the Seventies quite like undead bikers terrorizing a small town, and if you've never seen the 1973 classic UK film Psychomania, then you're in luck as come October Severin Films will be releasing a special edition DVD of the flick directed by Don Sharp.
From the Press Release:
The grooviest zombie biker movie of them all is being exhumed and, after years of shoddy bootlegs and sub-par presentations, is getting the Special Edition treatment from Severin. Psychomania stars Beryl Reed (Beast in the Cellar) and, in his last performance, George Sanders (Village of the Damned), who perfect a formula to return from the grave via some sort of satanic toad worship. Said formula is then used by young Tommy and his biker gang, The Living Dead, who, after offing themselves in a variety of creative ways, free-wheel back from the dead to wreak havoc on a small English town.

You can’t beat late night television to catch some of the oddities of the film world. Series’ like Moviedrome and Mondo Macabro presented some weird and wonderful films, but sheer scheduling alone would bring the occasional strange delight our way. The only bonus of insomnia was that I’d never miss these films when they were on and it’s how I got into loving film, the veritable B-movie banquet that was the early hours So, here are my choices of five late night TV gems:
Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark (1973) Now you see them, now you don’t…now you die
Be afraid, be very afraid in this very effective made-for-tv movie which has already made an entry in fistinface’s ‘Five: TV Movies Not About Eating Disorders’. I love cheesy TV movies but this is the rare thing of a darker, more original film and...
