The 2024 British Open tees off this week from Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland, with the first round getting underway on Thursday, July 18, and running the Claret Jug being hoisted on Sunday, July 21. Do you remember the answer to the question, Who is Darkman? If not, Scream Factory invites you to revisit Sam Raimi’s first foray into superhero films with their brand new 4K Ultra HD release of 1990’s Darkman launching February 20th.
After being unable to obtain the rights to The Shadow, Raimi decided to mix traits from other popular crime fighters and classic Universal Monsters and pour them into the base of his own unique and tragic figure, Darkman. And this unique character is one who could disguise themselves as anyone they wanted to be.
With prospects like Bill Paxton and Gary Oldman interested in the lead, Raimi rolled the dice on virtual unknown Liam Neeson for his first ever starring role. Raimi also took a gamble on another longshot, his roommate Frances McDormand for the female lead after Julia Roberts bowed out due to personal reasons and became the Pretty Woman.

Golf’s final major of 2023, The Open Championship (or the British Open as we call it in the States) takes place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, for its 151st edition July 20-23. Australia’s Cameron Smith (pictured) won the Claret Jug last year. He had an emotional parting with the trophy this week, though he says it’s only temporary. Top contenders this year include 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, 2023 PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka and 2023 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark. USA Network and NBC air The Open on TV, with streaming coverage available on Peacock, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. Mike Tirico hosts the broadcast and also does play-by-play duty for his 25th Open, rotating with Dan Hicks, Terry Gannon and Steve Sands. A “Real Housewives of Miami” revival was among the programming announcements Peacock made on Wednesday as part of its Television Critics Association presentation.
The original “Rhom” aired on Bravo from 2011-2013 for four seasons. The move to develop the show at Peacock is significant, as it would be the first show in the “Real Housewives” franchise to air outside of Bravo, further emphasizing the importance streaming will play in the years to come.
“The Real Housewives of Miami” is produced by Purveyors of Pop with Matt Anderson, Nate Green and Cooper Green serving as executive producers. Andy Cohen will also executive produce.
In addition, Peacock announced series orders for two scripted comedy projects, an unscripted series, and two docuseries. The first comedy stars Craig Robinson. In its first foray into true crime programming, Peacock has ordered John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, a six-part documentary series that looks at one of the world’s most notorious serial killers. All six episodes will drop on Thursday, March 25. The series announcement was part of Peacock’s presentation Wednesday at the TCA virtual Press Tour.
The docuseries hails from NBC News Studios and Emmy-nominated producer Rod Blackhurst (Amanda Knox) and his Witchcraft Motion Picture Compnay. It tells the story of Gacy through his own words, those who were forever changed by his unspeakable deeds and those who believe that the full truth about the case remains concealed to this day, according to Peacock. It features a multi-hour interview with Gacy himself from prison, most of which has never been seen, as well as exclusive audio and video interviews, including with one of his closest confidantes and his second ex-wife.

Mike Tirico, Al Michaels, and Dan Hicks are among the NBC Sports on-air personalities who will take a pay cut for the rest of the year, the latest TV-sports team to agree to salary reductions in the wake of the effects of the nation’s coronavirus pandemic on the sports business.
“Our on-air personalities reached out to see how they could contribute to helping our company at this difficult time, and all have voluntarily accepted temporary pay reductions,” said Pete Bevacqua, president of NBC Sports Group, in a prepared statement. “It’s another reminder of the truly great team we have at NBC Sports, and how we’re all working together to get through this immense challenge.” NBC Sports boasts telecasts of “Sunday Night Football’ as well as NHL games and Premier League soccer.

With Halloween fast approaching, this writer wanted to unpack one of his all-time favorite horror movies, Evil Dead II (a.k.a. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn). The first time I beheld the original The Evil Dead (1981), I found myself utterly terrified by the movie’s grisly carnage, completely charmed by its obvious low-fi origins, and wholly bewildered by a sense of humor that can only be described as “Three Stooges-esque.” The fact that it was made by a bunch of college dropouts from the suburbs of Michigan, through money raised largely from suburban dentists and grocers, only made its achievement all the more impressive. The movie’s charmingly crude special effects and daringly acrobatic camerawork only served to enhance its freshness, positioning it as a raw, gritty antidote to that era’s glossier, tamer studio horror fare.

But I knew that this was only the appetizer. By the time I got around to Evil Dead II, it had become legend in my mind. As a fairly literate movie fan, I knew that this was purported to be the crown jewel of the Ash Williams cinematic trilogy.

NBC made a giant-sized oopsie while covering the women’s Super-g skiing competition at the Winter Olympics on Saturday by prematurely announcing the gold medal winner, who turned out not to be the winner at all! Austrian World Cup alpine skier Anna Veith’s (above left) time down the course put her in the top spot in line for the gold, and NBC commentators Bode Miller and Dan Hicks apparently thought she had it locked up. They were wrong. “Four straight Olympic golds in the women’s Super-g for the skiing powerhouse of Austria. I just about can’t believe it!” Hicks said of Veith....

Bode Miller has apologized after receiving backlash for his Olympic commentary. Olympic skier Miller, who retired in 2017, came under fire for comments he made on-air about skier Anna Veith's marriage at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea this week. During Veith's giant slalom event run, Miller and co-host Dan Hicks started to discuss Veith's knee injury. "Yeah the knee is certainly an issue, I want to point out she also got married and it's historically very challenging to race in the World Cup with a family or after being married," Miller said. "Not to blame the spouses, but I just wanna toss that out there that it could be your husband's fault." ...

Dick Johnson & Tommygun vs. the Cannibal Cop has wrapped principal photography in Buffalo, NY, and we have the first set of stills right here. Get a look at this upcoming horror comedy, or face the wrath of Dick. Trust us... Dick wrath sucks.
The film, an action-horror-buddy cop hybrid, was written by John Renna, who co-stars with Sam Qualiana. Danny Hicks, Debbie Rochon, and Timothy Patrick Quill are also in the cast.
"Working with Danny and Tim, and finally getting to direct Debbie, was a true honor," says Renna.
He also gives a lot of credit to his location, "The support we received from local businesses was staggering. Buffalo actively supports film and art, making a lot possible on a minimal budget."
Qualiana plays Dick Johnson, a by-the-book detective who partners with rough-around-the-edges Jeff "Tommygun" Thompson to track down the elusive and mysterious Cannibal Cop. Hicks plays their captain, who...

Renna will co-produce and co-direct with Chris Rados (His Name Is Clownface) of Wny Grip & Lighting.

What an amazing week for TV fans. As if you didn’t have enough stacking to do with the new, brilliant season of “House of Cards” on Netflix, there are four other full seasons in this week’s What to Watch that you really should watch front to back. And then there’s the still-amazing “Darkman,” a cult classic that perfectly captures Sam Raimi’s skill at controlled chaos. Finally, we have two ’80s horror flicks in one set in “Bad Dreams” and “Visiting Hours.” Check ‘em all out (Ok, you can skip the genre stinkers).

From his modest start in that ramshackle cabin in the woods what must seem like a lifetime ago, Sam Raimi has become one of the more versatile and beloved directors in Hollywood. With Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Darkman today, we bring you our Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise.
We're going to keep this list to films directed by Raimi. If we were to include the movies he's acted in, or god forbid produced, we'd be here all night. But a few of his production credits like 30 Days of Night, both of The Grudge films, Boogeyman, The Possession, Timecop and of course the Evil Dead remake are noteworthy.
Some honorable directorial mentions include his most recent, Oz the Great and Powerful. It might not have been the epic it was billed to be, but it looked fantastic; and when you manage to haul in half a billion...

Darkman is the reason that I was so excited when it was announced that Sam Raimi would be bringing Spider-Man, my favorite comic book character, to the big screen. Unfortunately, Spider-Man turned out to be a huge disappointment, but we’ll always have Darkman as Raimi’s superb “comic book” film. Of course, the truth of the matter is that Darkman wasn’t based on a comic book, rather a short story Raimi wrote paying homage to old B-rate Mummy movies. Despite that, it still shares many of the same characteristics of even the modern day “revamped” comic book epics. And, despite some dated visuals, it still very much holds up to this day. This is a film that I do try and revisit as often as possible, but as many movies that gets stacked upon my desk, it has been since the initial Universal Blu-ray was released back in...

The second day of the London 2012 Olympics was filled with more teeth-clenching and heart-wrenching moments than last night’s episode of True Blood. At this pace, we’re going to be a ball of nerves by day 17. As anticipated, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team ruled the day, but their world was rocked when world champion Jordyn Wieber failed to advance to the individual all-around finals. In other upsets, France nabbed the gold in the men’s 100-meter freestyle relay, lowering Ryan Lochte’s pedestal while redeeming Michael Phelps. Now for the highs: Dana Vollmer set the women’s...
