Kapital’s Aaron Kaplan, Brian Morewitz, and Michael Lohmann are producing the double feature alongside Kaplan’s daughter Jaiden Kaplan, who initially came up with the idea for these films.

Jaiden Kaplan is now a junior at Duke, and Deadline reports that she “came up with the idea for One Mile while she and her dad were on a college tour in the Northeast in 2019 and were driving on a particularly desolate highway surrounded by woods on one side and half-frozen lakes on the other.”

Sources tell the news outlet that the premium film channel has passed on renewing the show for any further episodes. The series showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet had recently spoken about how the show was intended to be a limited series with a definitive conclusion. However, halfway through the season, plans started to change.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Paramount Global-backed premium cable network has declined to renew the series for a second season. The news comes as showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet had originally conceived the drama as a closed-ended limited series but changed course as they were halfway through making the first season. Sources say execs were very pleased with the show’s creative and felt the season came to a natural and fitting conclusion.

“It was 200 days of filming, for 10 episodes. Exclusive: CBS has set up a writers room for drama The Great Game, produced by CBS Studios in association with Alex Kurtzman’s studio-based Secret Hideout. It will be led by the project’s co-writers/executive producers John Hlavin (The Man Who Fell to Earth) and Matthew Newman (Chicago Pd) with the goal of generating multiple scripts for a potential straight-to-series order.

The Great Game, inspired by an unpublished novel of the same name by Newman, is the second CBS drama project from the 2021-22 development cycle that the network has put on a script-to-series path by commissioning a writers room; it joins Hsi: Puerto Rico. I hear the purpose of the model is to find dramas that can bypass the pilot stage and go to series which can be produced cost-effectively.

Like its counterparts, CBS has been exploring alternatives to the traditional broadcast development model, a process that was accelerated by the pandemic.

“South Park” is celebrating its upcoming 25th anniversary with the announcement of a new episode set to premiere on March 2, as well as a 30-piece orchestral rendition of its hit song, “Chocolate Salty Balls.”

The song was featured on the show’s first season, and went on to claim the No. 1 spot on the U.K. charts. It was written by “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker, who, along with Matt Stone, went on to write the Tony Award-winning musical “The Book of Mormon.” “Chocolate Salty Balls” was originally performed by the late Isaac Hayes, who played the character of Chef on the series for its first nine seasons.

“South Park” launched on Comedy Central on Aug. 13, 1997, co-created by Stone and Parker. Parker, Stone, Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II are the show’s executive producers. Producers are Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell and Vernon Chatman.

“I think it’s amazing and it’s beautiful that Walter Teviis is having is moment right now. I wish he had more of it when he was alive so he could appreciate how much people appreciate his work,” Kurtman said of the novelist, who also penned The Queen’s Gambit. Showtime announced today that Bill Nighy has joined the cast of “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” filling the same role as David Bowie in the 1976 film.

Nighy will play the brilliant Thomas Newton, the first alien to arrive on Earth in over 40 years who turns to Faraday (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to complete his original mission. The TV series is based on the Walter Tevis novel of the same name.

“I was honored to be invited to play the part of Thomas Jerome Newton that glorious David Bowie made so famous,” said Nighy in a statement.

The Chiwetel Ejiofor-fronted drama, which is based on the Walter Tevis novel and the cult classic 1976 film starring David Bowie, is moving from Paramount+ to Showtime and comes after Deadline revealed that Halo made the reverse switch.

It is the third home for the project, which comes from Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet and John Hlavin. The series was originally set up in development at Hulu, before seguing to CBS All Access, nee Paramount+, before its latest move to the premium cable network.

The series will launch in 2022 with production set to begin in London in April.
