Crossed Wires Podcast Festival Day Two: On-stage audience proposal and Fully Monty stripping at Help I Sexted My Boss
Image
At the second day of the Crossed Wires Podcast Festival on Saturday 5th July, headliner Help I Sexted My Boss raised the roof with an on-stage proposal. Organised between William Hanson and the doting proposer in the interval, Tristan knelt on one knee as his now-fiancé Shona jumped with delight, before recounting the day he confessed his feelings in Wetherspoons as Jordan North ran around the stage with uncontrollable excitement.

Taking an unexpected turn in the second half, Jordan and ‘producer Ben’ stripped into gold hot pants for a Full Monty parody before William ‘stripped’ into a custom made Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday hybrid kit. A crowd sing-along to I Will Survive had all hands in the air, exuding true Saturday night fever from over 2,000 people at the sold-out show. On Instagram, fans are calling it the ‘best night ever’.

Image
Leo Woodall earned his breakout fame as Dexter Mayhew in Netflix’s One Day, a charming, easy-going man at first, but plagued by self-doubt and destruction. With his latest project, Vladimir, Woodall dives into a darker, more complex persona—a character so far removed from the charming romantic of his past that it might leave fans reeling.

Women Directors Behind ‘Baby Reindeer’, ‘One Day’ & ‘We Are Lady Parts’ Discuss Breaking Records & Smashing Glass Ceilings At The BAFTAs
Image
Exclusive: A little-publicized representation record was broken at the BAFTA TV noms this year.

For the first time ever, more women than men are nominated in the Best Director: Fiction category, with talented helmers behind One Day, Baby Reindeer and We Are Lady Parts all recognized. Just one man, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light’s Peter Kosminsky, made the cut.

Along with its big screen sibling, representation in TV directing has been under the microscope for years – a campaign to boost the number of female documentary directors has led some networks and indies to commit to 50/50 gender parity – and a 2023 tweak to the BAFTA longlisting rules also appears to have improved the situation.

Here, the trio of nominated female directors – Molly Manners, Nida Manzoor and Weronika Tofilska – talk stereotypes, “macho” behavior and inspirational women, while detailing their respective experiences getting to the top.

Molly Manners (One Day):...

BAFTA TV Awards Snubs & Surprises: ‘Day Of The Jackal’ Frozen Out; Record Year For Disney+; ‘Supacell’ Makes Drama Series Cut
Image
The BAFTA Television Awards nominations have landed and, as always, there were a few eyebrow raisers from jury members.

The likes of Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs The Post Office were expected to do well, and both series duly delivered with eight and six nominations respectively.

Baby Reindeer has been a darling of the season, and the BAFTA TV Awards will be the big crescendo to its campaign. The beloved Jessica Gunning and creator Richard Gadd both compete for prizes, while the series — which remains the subject of a massive U.S. lawsuit from Fiona Harvey — will compete in the Limited Drama category.

There was also good news for Slow Horses, which bagged six nominations for Apple TV+, including the notable return of Gary Oldman in the Leading Actor category after he missed out in 2024.

Where there is good news, there is also bad news, with a few notable...

‘Baby Reindeer’ Dominates BAFTA TV and Craft Awards Nominations With Eight Nods
Image
After winning six Emmy Awards last year, “Baby Reindeer” is looking to dominate on home soil with eight nominations at the BAFTA TV and Craft Awards.

The hit Netflix series emerged at the top of the pack, landing nods for limited drama, leading actor for Richard Gadd and supporting actress for both Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau. With her nomination, Mau becomes the first openly transgender BAFTA TV Award nominee.

Further down, there was a three-way tie for second place, with ITV’s “Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office,” Disney+’s Jilly Cooper adaptation “Rivals” and Apple TV+’s spy series “Slow Horses” earning six nominations each. Disney+ also earned four nominations for Ira drama “Say Nothing,” as did the BBC documentary “Life and Death in Gaza.”

“Baby Reindeer” stars Gadd and Gunning were among 21 of 44 performance nominees to land their first BAFTA TV award nomination. Other first-timers include Jonathan Pryce...

Cooper Koch, Keri Russell, and the best Netflix performances of 2024
Image
It's time to just say it: 2024 was a great year for Netflix shows and movies. Whether you'd like to admit it or not, the streaming service released some of the year's most talked about and most watched content that had far reaching impacts beyond our own personal reviews. Netflix has constantly driven pop culture forward, but this year more than ever, the streamer was the driving force.

Part of what made Netflix's shows and movies so massively popular in 2024, beyond the compelling stories and bingeable nature of the content, was the performances of the talented stars. There were revelatory performances by newcomers and dependably amazing performances by established stars we know and love. In equal measure, they made these shows the ones worth bingeing in 2024.

While we would love to spotlight every single actor and actress that left us stunned this year, there are three particular performances that stand out...

The Christmas movie has, in recent years, become its own industrial complex, algorithmically churned out by streaming services to hit various subscriber demographic sweet spots. Perhaps the seemingly disposable likes of Hot Frosty and Meet Me Next Christmas will be treasured for many Decembers to come, but they have a tough canon to crack, as represented by our all-star Advent calendar of festive movie favourites, chosen by some of the film industry’s best and brightest, invited by the Observer New Review to help our readers count down to the big day itself.

Some of the films here are as firmly entrenched in the season as mince pies and fir trees – who can argue with director Gurinder Chadha’s selection of It’s a Wonderful Life or actor Joe Alwyn’s of The Snowman?...

Why Emma's Death in One Day Lacks Impact
Image
The following article contains major spoilers for One Day, now streaming on Netflix.

When it comes to Netflix's romance shows, there are numerous that resonate with fans. Teenage audiences adore Never Have I Ever, while more adult audiences enjoy TV series such as Bridgerton. It's the streaming service's way of illustrating it has something for everyone.

Now, Netflix is unraveling another very emotional love story. This comes in the shape of One Day, an adaptation based on the book from David Nicholls, which already got the film treatment in 2011. This show incorporates more of the novel, adding depth and nuance to the story of star-crossed lovers Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley in England. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite stick the landing, thanks to a major storytelling issue with one of the leads throughout the show.

How Netflix's 3 Body Problem Differs From the Books
Image
The following contains spoilers for 3 Body Problem, now streaming on Netflix.

Whether they're TV shows or movies, one thing fans are always curious about with book adaptations is how the source material will be altered. It doesn't matter if it's comics or novels, changes are usually made. Genre doesn't matter, as seen with Netflix tweaking the One Day television series from the original novel by David Nicholls.

This is done to improve plot beats, add nuance, and make properties relatable to modern audiences. Netflix does the same with another sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, namely by streamlining the storyline from all three novels by Chinese writer, Liu Cixin. Here are the biggest changes Netflix's 3 Body Problem makes from the source material.

Netflix's 3 Body Problem Splits the Heroic Narrative

David Nicholls Talks Adaptations & Why Entrusting Other Writers With Netflix’s ‘One Day’ Series Was A “Happy And Collaborative” Experience — Storyhouse
Image
Esteemed British writer David Nicholls is not precious when it comes to adaptations of his novels and cites Netflix’s recent adaptation of his 2009 novel One Day as being a perfect example of how being open-minded to fresh ideas on established material can result in good work.

Speaking at Dublin’s first ever screenwriting festival Storyhouse, Nicholls sat down for a lengthy discussion with Room and Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson to discuss his process of writing and adapting material. Nicholls credited the writers and directors of series One Day – writer-creator Nicole Taylor, writer Bijan Sheibani and director Molly Manners, among others – of their ability to adapt One Day for a modern television audience.

“The joy of that was that they were both being very faithful and trying to replicate the feeling of reading the novel while at the same time embellishing and drawing things out,” said Nicholls. “And I...

One Day's Netflix Success Is A Reminder To Watch This 18-Year-Old Movie With 90% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Netflix's "One Day" was a major hit series, and should prompt viewers to watch the 2006 film "Starter for 10," based on a David Nicholls novel. Nicholls adapted a few of his books into screenplays, with the film "Starter for 10" receiving critical acclaim (and the movie version of "One Day" failing critically). "Starter for 10" and Netflix's "One Day" received similar Rotten Tomatoes scores, yet the series was more successful globally.

Netflix's One Day was one of the most streamed series upon its debut on the streaming platform, and its success should prompt those who enjoyed it to watch a film that premiered 18 years before the show's release. The 2024 romantic drama television series is an adaptation of David Nicholls' 2009 book of the same name, which chronicles the complicated and devastating love story between Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley. Netflix's One Day Would've Been Worse If It Had Kept One Part Of Dexter's Book Story
Image
Netflix's One Day series eliminates Dexter and Tilly's sexual encounter that occurs in the book. The decision to remove this plot point was for the best as it would have caused major drama and soured the relationships between the characters. Tilly's character in the show is much more well-rounded and likable and has a much closer friendship with Emma compared to the book.

Netflix's One Day left out one part of Dexter's story from the book that would've made the TV adaptation worse. Based on David Nicholls' 2009 novel, One Day tells the complex love story between Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) as it sways between platonic and romantic. Beginning on the night the pair first met at their university graduation ball on July 15, 1988, One Day traces how both Emma and Dexter's lives unfold, together and apart, over a 20-year period, with each new episode taking...

This Genius Detail Makes One Day Even More Heartbreaking

Emma fulfills everything she said she wouldn't do with Dexter in Netflix's One Day, showing the depth of their relationship before tragedy. This genius detail is revealed in a flashback to episode 1 in the series finale. Netflix's One Day Perfectly Flips Leo Woodall's Other Major TV Role
Image
Leo Woodall's series "One Day" showcases the tragic love story of Dexter and Emma over twenty years. Woodall's characters, Jack in "The White Lotus" and Dexter in "One Day", share charismatic yet risky qualities. While Jack's story lacks depth, Dexter's journey in "One Day" offers a more complex and relatable character.

Leo Woodall has recently been in the spotlight for his new Netflix series, One Day, wherein he plays Dexter, an attractive and charismatic young man with various bad habits, who is undeniably similar to Woodall's other most recent role, Jack in The White Lotus season 2. Though Woodall's career began back in 2019, he first entered the public eye when he played a featured role in the second season of The White Lotus. And though he won't be returning to the anthology series, it seems that Woodall is continuing to make a name for himself with his new heartwrenching series.

What St. Swithin's Day Is & Why One Day Takes Place Then
Image
St. Swithin's Day is an important date in British folklore and has portentous powers according to some traditions, which adds a deeper significance to its role in the story of One Day on Netflix. The choice of setting the story on St. Swithin's Day provides structure to the complex narrative and avoids the clichés associated with other well-known calendar milestones like Valentine's Day or Christmas. The association of St. Swithin's Day with the weather acts as a narrative tool, using pathetic fallacy to give hints to the audience about what may be ahead for the characters based on the meteorological phenomena.

A New Netflix Series Adaptation Has Audiences Absolutely Bawling
Image
Note: This article contains major spoilers for "One Day."

In 2011, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess starred in a romantic drama called "One Day," about two friends who meet up on July 15 every year for 20 years, slowly falling in love in the process. While this may sound like the rosier version of 1978's "Same Time, Next Year," it is actually an adaptation of the novel "One Day" by David Nicholls. It was a modest hit at the box office but underwhelmed critics, and with Hathaway appearing in both "The Dark Knight Rises" and her Academy Award-winning turn in "Les Misérables" the following year, "One Day" has mostly been forgotten by the general public. One of the most common complaints lobbied against the film was that the 20-year timeline was too big to be condensed for a movie, but limited series weren't as plentiful in 2011 as they are now.

Over a decade later,...

Finally, Kay’s postbag management takes a turn for the meta and we look at side-eye references in your favourite shows.

Why Netflix's One Day Kept The Tragic Ending Explained By Showrunner
Image
The article contains major spoilers for One Day.

Showrunner Nicole Taylor explains why One Day's tragic ending was kept, despite the desire to change it. The decision to maintain the original ending was made to preserve the thematic and structural integrity of the story. The aftermath of Emma's death and its impact on Dexter and her friends were carefully considered and addressed in the adaptation.

One Day showrunner explains the decision not to change the novel's tragic ending. Based on the novel by David Nicholls, which itself was made into an Anne Hathaway movie in 2011, Netflix's One Day follows Emma (Ambika Mod) and Dexter (Leo Woodall) on the night of their graduation, July 15th, 1988. It's on that night that the two meet, and the next morning, they go their separate ways. However, the bond they develop proves to be much longer-lasting.

The One Day Ending Explains the ‘Sly and Unseen’ Significance of July 15
Image
Warning: contains finale spoilers for Netflix’s One Day.

A year before One Day author David Nicholls published the novel that made his name, his adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 19th century novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles aired on BBC One. Years later, Nicholls described Tess to The Guardian as the book that changed his life:

“It was the first book I adapted for the screen and gave me the confidence to write something other than comedy. Adaptation does that sometimes – gives you a hand-up into new territory. Also Chapter 15 contains the germ of the idea for One Day, for which I will always be grateful.”

That germ of an idea was a quote from Tess, which is included among One Day’s many epigraphs, and it also finds its way into the final episode of Nicole Taylor’s new 14-episode Netflix adaptation starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall.

One Day: Are Emma and Dexter Based on Real People?
Image
‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.

One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
