When people remember the "Harry Potter" movies, they're usually at least partially thinking about the score from the legendary John Williams. In terms of how memorable and evocative it is, "Hedwig's Theme" is up there with "The Imperial March" from "Star Wars" or "He's a Pirate" from the "Pirates of the Caribbean Movies," in that everyone can remember and accurately hum it at a moment's notice. Regularly producing bangers like this, it should be no surprise that John Williams has earned over 50 Oscar nominations over his career.

That's why it's a little surprising that Williams wasn't actually there for most of the "Harry Potter" films. The soundtrack for "Goblet of Fire" was composed by Patrick Doyle, "Order of the Phoenix" and "Half-Blood Prince" were composed by Nicholas Hooper, and both "Deathly Hallows" films were composed by Alexandre Desplat. The Harry Potter original motion picture soundtrack will be available in a 16-lp box set on Nov. 29. The massive box set features more than 10 hours of music from all eight films with music composed by John Williams, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat, Warner Music Group’s catalog developer Rhino announced Monday. The expansive set will also be available in four color variants corresponding to one of the four Hogwarts Houses. MTV Documentary Films is making its Oscar-nominated documentary The Eternal Memory available for free on YouTube through the rest of the month.

The film, winner of the Goya Award for Best Iberoamerican Film and the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival among many other awards, earned director Maite Alberdi the second Oscar nomination of her career. The Chilean filmmaker was nominated in 2021 for her documentary feature The Mole Agent.

“The Eternal Memory tells a profound and moving love story that balances vibrant individual and collective remembrance with the longevity of an unbreakable human bond,” notes a release about the film. “Augusto and Paulina have been together and in love for 25 years. Eight years ago, their lives were forever changed by Augusto’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. As one of Chile’s most prominent cultural commentators and television presenters, Augusto is no stranger to building an archive of memory.

MTV Documentary Films’ “The Eternal Memory,” directed by Maite Alberdi, will exclusively debut on Paramount+ in the U.S. on Nov. 7.

“The Eternal Memory” tells the story of Augusto Góngora and Paulina Urrutia, a Chilean couple whose lives are irrevocably impacted by Augusto’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Exclusive: The Eternal Memory, the latest film from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Maite Alberdi (The Mole Agent), has landed a series of international deals for Dogwoof and MTV Documentary Films ahead of its UK premiere this week at the London Film Festival.

Following what both companies have described as “competitive bidding,” new all-rights deals have been confirmed with Cinemex (Mexico), who will release the film this fall, Mediawaan (France), Piffl, Golden Scene (Hong Kong and Macau), and DDDream (China).

Dogwoof will release the doc across the UK and Ireland on November 10. Other theatrical releases set for this winter and early 2024, with previously announced markets, include Edge Entertainment (Nordic and Baltics), Madman (Australia and New Zealand), I Wonder Pictures (Italy), Periscoop (Benelux), Lev (Israel), Synca (Japan), Restart (Former Yugoslavia), and Spain’s B-Team.

Dogwoof, the British sales company specialized in high-profile docs, has announced multiple deals on “Eternal Memory,” which won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Documentary in January and was a recent standout at the Berlinale where it had its European bow. The hot doc is screening later this week at the Cph:dox documentary film festival in Copenhagen.

The latest feature from Oscar-nominated “Mole Agent” director Maite Alberdi had its world premiere as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance last month, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize before MTV Documentary Films acquired worldwide rights. Dogwoof will work in partnership with MTV Documentary Films to represent the film for international sales.

The project marks the second collaboration between Dogwoof and Alberdi, having represented “The Mole Agent” for international sales before it was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2021.

The film will have its premiere in Berlin on Feb. 18. Dogwoof is also bringing the pic to market at the European Film Market.

MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to “The Eternal Memory,” Maite Alberdi’s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated feature “The Mole Agent.” Sources say that the film sold for nearly 3 million.

The doc premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and will have its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next month as part of the “Panorama” section.

The film was produced by Alberdi, Juan De Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín and Rocío Jadue. It is executive produced by Marcela Santibañez, Daniela Sandoval, Nicholas Hooper, Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements, Chandra Jessee and Rebecca Lichtenfeld.

MTV Documentary Films was set up in 2019 by legendary HBO Documentary Films boss Sheila Nevins, and Paramount Global executives Liza Burnett Fefferman and Nina L. Diaz. Nevins was at HBO for 38 years and won 34 Emmys in that period. Her credits include “Citizenfour,” “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” and “Paradise Lost.”

Opening up to works from over the whole of Latin America, this year’s Sanfic Industria Series Lab will highlight series currently in development from Uruguay’s Fernando Epstein, Argentina’s Laura Farhi and Peru’s Paola Terán.

Epstein’s “The Invisible Ink” proved one of the big winners at June’s Conecta Fiction, marking the first TV work from the renowned Uruguayan film producer.

Penned by Farhi, a writer on “Soy Tu Fan,” “Soy Luna” and “Intertwined,” “The Big Leap” won the Filmarket Hub 2022 International TV Pilots Contest.

Composer Benjamin Wallfisch has signed with the Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency (Gsa) for worldwide representation, in partnership with London-based agency Cool Music Ltd.

A top composer, whose scoring credits include “It Chapter Two,” Shazam!” Hellboy,” “Hidden Figures” and “Hostile Planet,” among others, Wallfisch has worked on over 75 feature films and is a member of the BAFTA and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In April, Wallfisch was featured in Variety‘s Billion Dollar Composer series.

The Gsa roster includes such noted composers as John Williams, Thomas Newman, James Newton Howard and Michael Giacchino, among others.

Said Michael Gorfaine in announcing Wallfisch’s signing: “Ben is an enormously talented composer and musician, and we are truly delighted to welcome him to the Gsa family.”

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.

So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.

Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.

I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.

Rahman composed for the Alex Kurtzman directed “People Like Us” starring Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, Jon Favreau and Michelle Pfeiffer.

In the top 20 list of the biggest ever grossing films worldwide, six are Harry Potter titles. The music for the film series has featured the work of the cream of film composers including John Williams (who received Academy Award nominations for two films in the series), Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. This unique collection of new recordings by The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra brings together the music from all eight films for the very first time.

Let me emphasize what is set forth above, that this is not a collection of tracks from previously released soundtracks, but rather is a new recording, both a digest and expansion of each of the themes.

Music is an intricate part of movie making, and it is absolutely necessary to make sure that the composer should have a firm grasp on whatever genre the film is. This is especially true when you’re bringing a book or series of books that is loved by millions to life on the big screen. The trouble is finding the right composer when dealing with the magical world of Harry Potter. The seven books of the series were transformed into eight beautiful films – if not always adhering to the source material one hundred percent – and creating the musical soundscape was just as important as the sets, costumes, actors, or special effects. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra have taken some of the finer selections from these eight films and presented them brilliantly in a new collection that is a treat for any Harry Potter fanatic.

If you’ve been listening to Mousterpiece Cinema long enough, you probably know that I’m a cat person. I’ve mentioned, offhandedly, on the show how the Disney animated canon manages to often make cats into villains, except in a couple of notable examples where cats are the leads; unfortunately, the two movies I’m thinking of where that’s the case are two of the worst they’ve ever made. The point, though, is that I love cats. I really love all animals (and honestly, who doesn’t?). I can’t imagine that I’m alone in linking human characteristics to my pets. Do my cats actually have unique personalities as I and my wife do? Or am I just anthropomorphizing them to relate to them more easily?...

The opening moments of Disneynature’s “Chimpanzee” are genuinely jaw dropping – an emerald green jungle, more lush and 3D than the otherworldly forests of Pandora, fans out across the screen, and we’re introduced to a young male chimpanzee named Oscar, as intricate and bewildering as any CGI creation. And then…the narration starts. In a misguided bit of synergistic back-scratching, Buzz Lightyear himself, Tim Allen, provides the running commentary, which is so awful that it does the unthinkable – it actually unravels much of the natural beauty presented onscreen. It’s enough that the entire time you’re thinking, “Well, maybe there’ll be a silent version on the DVD.” It’s that ridiculously terrible.

It’s a shame, too, because so much of “Chimpanzee” is amazing and compelling and very, very wonderful. It was co-directed by Mark Lindfield (a zoologist-turned-filmmaker who worked on BBC’s groundbreaking “Planet Earth”) and...

I was actually beginning to believe Cliff Martinez's score for Drive may actually have a shot with all the love it has received in the precursor awards, but last night the Academy announced the list of 97 scores eligible for Best Original Score at the 2012 Oscars and, oops, what do you know, both Drive and Attack the Block didn't make the cut. The only other score I had on my current list of predictions for the category to not make the cut was Howard Shore's music for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. Why? Nicholas Hooper is currently scoring the Disneynature documentary Chimpanzee. The movie is directed by Alastair Fothergrill (The Blue Planet, Deep Blue) and Mark Linfield (Earth) and centers on a family of chimps living in the Ivory Coast and Ugandan rain forests. Hooper who is best known for his scores for Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince previously worked with Fothergrill on Disneynature’s African Cats, which was released earlier this year. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 was the slow and methodical setup for the ultimate payoff that is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and the wait was worth it. Action packed and filled with tension, Part 2 of the finale to the Harry Potter saga is the half that makes a whole, adding an additional two hours and ten minutes to Part 1, we're talking about a four-and-a-half-hour epic that makes for what's arguably the best film of the franchise.

A collection of reviews have been rolling out for the most anticipated movie of the summer Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. I'm happy to tell you that they are all extremely positive. It never thought they would have screwed it up, but you never know these days. The film doesn't hit theaters until July 15th, and I can't wait to see the awesome conclusion to this incredible franchise myself.

We suspect you don't need us to sell the work of move music magician Mr John Williams to you, and so we're not going to. Instead, we've got the news that one of cinema's finest composers (er, okay, that was selling him a bit) could be returning to the Harry Potter franchise for the very last movie in the series.

John Williams worked on the first three Harry Potter movies, and put together the theme for the films. But scoring duties on the films since have been taken on by Patrick Doyle and Nicholas Hooper (doing one and two films, respectively). Furthermore, the score for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part I has been put together by Alexandre Desplat.

Film Composer, Brian Tyler, who was featured on the cover of Iae Magazine's Dec/Jan 2010 issue was recently honored at Ascap’s 25th Anniversary Awards Celebration on June 24th in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.

According to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (Ascap) website, Tyler joined a host of other composers of the top box office film music and the most performed television music of 2009 at the organization’s event.

/Film reader Dano e-mailed me to point out that a track on the score for James Cameron's Avatar sounds suspiciously similar to a track on the score of Glory. Of course, both films were scored by composer James Horner. I understand that composers tend to use the same instruments and tones for different dramatic beats. Horner is notorious for this, as it sounds like he borrows (or repeats) from his past filmography. But what makes this more notable is that Horner is nominated for an Academy Award for his Avatar score, in a year when a lot of other musical artists have been disqualified from nomination. Sigh… Seems like the Music Branch of AMPAS is at it again. Did we learn nothing from last year’s mess? Their omissions just gall me. Only 81 scores managed to qualify and move onto the next round of Oscar voting.

Yeah Yeah Yeah’s frontwoman Karen O’s music for “Where the Wild Things Are,” which she co-wrote with Burwell, and Burnett’s and Stephen Bruton’s score to “Crazy Heart,” both of which have won critics awards, are also not on the branch’s “Reminder List” of qualifying achievements.
