Prior to the Sundance announcements, there was a bit of buzz around Brian Horiuchi's Parts Per Billion's as a favourite for selection but when the titles were announced last week, Horiuchi's directorial debut wasn't listed, despite the interesting premise and the great cast.
Frank Langella, Gena Rowlands, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Penn Badgley, Teresa Palmer and Alexis Bledel all star in what appears to be a trio of intersecting stories that unfold against the backdrop of a biological war which is killing millions.

The elusive “Golden Ticket”. Beginning next Wednesday (December 4th) in a wave of four announcements, is when the official word comes out. Plenty of filmmakers are already in the know, but some will find out over the course of this Thanksgiving weekend. Having covered the festival and fest circuit for some time now, we’re already aware that worthy films that were indeed submitted will be excluded from the ’14 edition. Thousands of filmmakers won’t get the phone call, and while it can bruise dreams, this is not a rejection of quality…but rather, a preference from a programmer/programming team which reflects a larger mandate. John Cooper, Trevor Groth et al. have a difficult job and the way I see it, it’s the equivalent to draft day for a major professional sport – where a team in a given turn doesn’t go for the consensus pick, but instead...

Best known for kick-starting careers of up-and-coming filmmakers, Park City still makes room for first time directors pushing north of a ripe old age north of 50. Writer of unknown entities America So Beautiful (2001) and Circle of Eight (2009), Brian Horiuchi’s (shot in Detroit of 2012) Parts Per Billion has got a Sundance parka friendly cast (comprised of Teresa Palmer, Penn Badgley, Josh Hartnett, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson with legends Frank Langella and Gena Rowlands). This is surely in completion stages.

It looks like we can look forward to more “found footage” entertainment, this time coming to the small screen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, MTV is developing an hour long found footage mystery in the same vein as Paranormal Activity entitled The Experiment. Miguel Sapochnik (Repo Men, House, Fringe) will direct the project while Brian Horiuchi will write. Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, The River) will executive produce through Blumhouse Productions along with Naomi Despres.
There’s still a ways before this actually becomes a series, but we’ll keep in touch.

MTV is in the early developmental stages of a brand new “found-footage mystery”. Tentatively titled The Experiment, this project is said to be shot in the same vein as Paranormal Activity, which doesn't come as much of a surprise given the fact that Jason Blum (who produced every Pa flick to see release) is on board as executive producer. The script is based on a story written by Brian Horiuchi and Miguel Sapochnik of House M.D. Fame. At this point, little is known of the plot itself. In fact, beyond what we've divulged here, not much of anything else is known.

MTV are working alongside 'The River' producer Jason Blum to bring yet another found-footage horror series to our television screens. Sadly back in May the Oren Peli and Michael R. Perry series 'The River' was cancelled by ABC but it doesn't seem to have dampened Blum's spirits...no pun intended. Blum, who has produced the 'Paranormal Activity' franchise as well as currently working on James Wan's 'Insidious 2', is lining up a spooky new series called simply 'The Experiment'. With the details being kept very quiet at this stage all we can tell you is the series is based on a story co-created by 'Repo Men' and 'Fringe' director Miguel Sapochnik and 'Circle of Eight' scribe Brian Horiuchi. MTV, the home of it-keeps-getting-even-better Teen Wolf, is working on a found-footage-type series along the lines of the Paranormal Activity movies or the hybrid series The River. And they have a perfect executive producer on board, Jason Blum; he was a producer on the Paranormal Activity movies and an executive producer on The River.
THR broke the news, and gave us a strong indication that this project would have similar spookiness to those other projects. This project is based on a story by Brian Horiuchi (Terminal D, Rcvr, Parts Per Billion) and Miguel Sapochnik (House); Horiuchi will pen the script, while Sapochnik, whose directing credits include Fringe, Awake and Falling Skies (wow!) is set to direct.
They certainly have the genre background to make it great; here’s hoping! We’ll keep you posted.

You know, MTV really hasn't been doing too badly when it comes to horror programming. Their Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen flicks are way better than you'd think, and even "Teen Wolf" is deserving of some well placed merit. Now they're read to go bump in the night.

Anyone who doubts a director making the leap from commercials to features only needs to think of people like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, and Duncan Jones. All of them worked in the medium before (and some after) breaking into helming motion pictures; just because you’re making something that’s 30 seconds doesn’t mean you lack the talent to make a great film.

Nicolai Fuglsig is an award-winning photojournalist and commercial director who created an internet sensation when he directed a commercial for Sony's Bravia line of televisions, in which a quarter-million bouncy rubber balls were poured down San Francisco streets. In 2009 Fuglsig was linked [1] to a futuristic Robin Hood film at Warner Bros., and he's been attached to other features as well. None have yet come to fruition, but he's still working towards a feature directorial gig. His latest attachment is a film called Brass Monkey. Robert Pattinson has dropped out of "Parts per Billion". On Tuesday, January 6, MTV News has come out with a report confirming that the "Twilight" star is no longer involved with the indie project to be co-produced by actress Rosario Dawson, adding that Pattinson's commitment for "New Moon" has led to the decision.
When asked about the 22-year-old actor's exit, his representative, Nicholas Frenkel, stated, "What you heard is correct." He further explained, "Unfortunately, the prep time and production schedule on 'New Moon' haven't left enough time for Robert to work on 'Parts per Billion' in the first quarter of this year." Initially, Pattinson is scheduled to begin shooting in Los Angeles this January for this movie which reportedly will contain his steamy love scenes with "Juno" actress Olivia Thirlby.
Having a hit movie with "Twilight", Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Edward Cullen in the vampire drama's sequel, "New Moon". However,...

Do you think Robert Pattinson will look different on film, now that he's a movie star? Will he carry some of that vampire sparkle with him wherever he goes? We'll get a chance to find out in Parts Per Billion, the indie drama that will be Pattinson's first new role since breaking hearts coast to coast as Edward Cullen. Rosario Dawson, who will co-star with Pattinson in the ensemble drama, told MTV about the project while promoting Seven Pounds. Given that it's one of those dramas where there are intertwined stories that never connect, Dawson and Pattinson don't actually act together in the film. "But we're all within the same group of people, and the same city of people, that are responding to a life-threatening situation," Dawson explains. The movie is directed by newcomer Brian Horiuchi, and also stars indie darling Olivia Thirlby and Dennis Hopper. Once again Pattinson is...

Every Monday, tMF gives you a rundown on who's making the biggest buzz among the current crop of young talents, based on the hottest news about upcoming movies, awards and nominations, magazine covers and interviews, and special appearances on festivals, talk shows and upcoming TV series or just from anything that make fans more excited about movies! Some rants! I'm beginning to arrive at the conclusion that maybe Jamie Bell is becoming more and more under-rated. Why should Mr. Foe only get a limited release? The young actor is phenomenal, for Chrissakes! If you're a bonafide fan of young actors, its time for you to watch Mr. Foe and demand for more of Jamie Bell. In our weekly top 3, he's definitely covered. So is Zac Efron, and don't tell me he sucks in High School Musical, wait till you watch him in Me and Orson Welles! Another mention, this time,...

RKO reawakening with the 'Dead'
RKO Pictures is bringing new life to the Boris Karloff cult film Isle of the Dead, hiring writers Brian Horiuchi and Matt Lazarus to adapt a remake.
In the 1945 film directed by Val Lewton, Karloff played a Greek military commander on an island where a plague breaks out. He orders the isle quarantined and as residents fall ill and die, some begin to suspect that a vampire-demon might be the cause of the deaths.
RKO plans to set the remake against the backdrop of a viral outbreak in Afghanistan.
"Val Lewton made his name by taking the horror genre to a new place," said RKO chairman and CEO Ted Hartley, who will produce. "Brian and Matt have the same kind of genre-bending sensibilities that will give this classic tale the perfect blend of contemporary themes and timeless scares."
No director has been set.
RKO Pictures vp Kevin Cornish is overseeing.
RKO Pictures at one point was among the greatest of the legendary Hollywood studios.
