Freeform’s future in scripted original programming is going under the microscope.
The Disney-owned basic-cable network has canceled Cruel Summer after a two-season run and will conclude Good Trouble with the second half of its upcoming fifth season.
Good Trouble, a spinoff of The Fosters, joins Grown-ish in wrapping their runs on the younger-skewing cabler in 2024. Anthology Cruel Summer and Good Trouble were Freeform’s last remaining scripted originals following the November cancellation of animated comedy Praise Petey.
Sources say Freeform executives, led by executive vp programming and content strategy Simran Sethi, wanted to bring back both shows but the ratings for both Good Trouble and Cruel Summer didn’t justify the costs of doing so — especially as Disney looks to cut costs by another $2 billion — and as most viewers watch the network’s programming on Hulu.

The trailer shows Lovibond and Johnson’s characters launching the magazine and auditioning models, while teasing the tense dynamic between the two.
“God you love a pyrrhic victory,” Lovibond says to Johnson in the trailer. “I don’t know what that means so it doesn’t hurt my feelings,” Johnson replies.

There’s nothing like being on your own to make you miss your mother. Lucky for Good Trouble‘s Callie and Mariana, both of their moms (played by The Fosters vets Teri Polo and Sherri Saum) stop by the spinoff this Tuesday (Freeform, 8/7c) to check in on their daughters.
But Lena and Stef may get more than they bargained for with the girls’ unorthodox communal living situation. Below, executive producer Bradley Bredeweg previews what the parental units think of their daughters’ new lives and talks about the couple’s next phase.

Darren Criss may have been the talk of the weekend following his Golden Globes win, but at Monday’s “Good Trouble” screening, it was his support of Lgbtq acting roles that had his name on everyone’s lips.
Recently, the “Assassination of Gianni Versace” actor told Bustle that he no longer felt comfortable taking on queer roles in film and television. As a straight actor, Criss said he wanted to make sure that he wouldn’t be taking away roles from gay actors — a statement that “Good Trouble” executive producer Bradley Bredeweg took to heart.
“I love it! I think it’s very bold and outspoken, and I love that he made that statement,” Bredeweg told Variety during the Freeform series’ red carpet at the Los Angeles Lgbt Center in Hollywood. “Hopefully one day we don’t have to make those statements, that we’re just in a world in...

The Fosters siblings Callie and Mariana are setting off on their own adventure in the Los Angeles-set spinoff Good Trouble (premiering Tuesday at 8/7c on Freeform), and their new life will look and feel much more mature.
“We love The Fosters, and we would’ve done it forever,” executive producer Joanna Johnson tells TVLine. “But because the network was really trying to be a network about and for millennials and Gen Z-ers, they sort of felt like it was time to grow the show up, and you know, it’s true. These actors have been playing younger than themselves for a long time.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details from the premiere episode of Good Trouble. Gone are the days of the enjoyably schmaltzy and sugar-coated melodramatic coming-of-age series about young adulthood (I love me some Dawson’s Creek) and welcome to a new era of millennial-driven shows that are inclusive and tackle issues that don’t play out like “lesson of the week” but rather give us a fresh — and much-needed — perspective of the modern world we live in today (Bi-sexuality! Race relations! Women in the workplace!). With Freeform’s Good Trouble, a spin-off of The Fosters, we see all of this and it’s done in a way that isn’t pandering or forced. Instead, it’s appropriate with heartfelt charm and feels like it didn’t come from an older, uninformed TV exec that said: “this is how kids talk, right?”

For five years and a little over 100 episodes, “The Fosters” told emotional and oftentimes topical stories stemming from a blended family in Southern California. Now, seven months after “The Fosters” came to an end, its spinoff series “Good Trouble” sets out to further explore such themes, but in a new setting and with a new ensemble.
“When you leave home, you go out in the world and you create your chosen family of friends and people that you work with, and that’s what this show is about,” executive producer Joanna Johnson tells Variety. “It’s still a family show, but it’s the family you choose to surround you and support you.”
“Good Trouble,” which was created by Johnson, Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg, starts by following “The Fosters” characters Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) as they move into the coterie — a communal living space in Los Angeles.
