The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards may be over, but complaining about the Emmy Awards is only just beginning.
It’s not uncommon for awards ceremonies’ In Memoriam segments, which honor deceased members of the industry, to tick off viewers. Such as how this year’s Oscars ceremony controversially lumped together a bunch of illegible names in the final moments of the In Memoriam, and also featured a “distracting” interpretive dance number.
Last night’s Emmys’ In Memoriam paid homage to late TV stars like Bob Newhart, Richard Simmons and Shannen Doherty, but it also omitted some major names. Some were confused as to why Matthew Perry didn’t appear, forgetting that this was actually the second Emmy ceremony of the year. Perry was honored during the delayed 74th Emmys, which aired back in January.
But the Emmys are now taking heat for leaving out some notable figures, including Erica Ash,...

There’s no shortage of Monday morning quarterbacks after an awards show. But for all that went right and not-so-right during Sunday’s 2024 Emmys telecast, there’s one mistake even the producers agree on: John Oliver was played off at the exact wrong moment.
Around an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Oliver accepted the award for outstanding scripted variety show on behalf of his Last Week Tonight staff. He flubbed his own son’s name. He thanked HBO for not canceling him. And, as he began to share a few words about his late dog, the wrap-up music started to play. “We had no idea that the dog that he was talking about had passed away,” says executive producer Dionne Harmon. “If you look back, you’ll notice that we turned the music down the moment he said the dog had passed. We didn’t know!”

The “In Memoriam” segment of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday paid tribute to a host of small-screen stars who have died in the past year, but users on social media were quick to point out the notable names that did not make the montage.
The poignant segment saw rapper Jelly Roll say a few words before performing his 2024 song “I Am Not Okay” as a montage of late stars was shown inside the Peacock Theater and on television. Among those included in the segment were Donald Sutherland, James Earl Jones, Martin Mull, Richard Lewis, Richard Simmons, Shannen Doherty, Gena Rowlands, Chance Perdomo and Carl Weathers.
There was general confusion online in some quarters due to the omission of Friends star Matthew Perry, who died Oct. 28, 2023 at 54. Perry’s absence was explained by the Television Academy paying a special tribute to the actor at the 74th edition of the Emmys held in January,...

To say that The Big Bend is set in the American desert is technically true but also a wild understatement. The stark and unsettling beauty of West Texas, with its cliffs and canyons and ghost towns, isn’t mere backdrop to this well-observed drama; it infuses the movie on a molecular level. Brett Wagner’s atmospheric feature — which has begun its theatrical journey a couple of years after playing the fest circuit — revolves around a holiday get-together that proves anything but relaxing for two couples and their school-age kids. With its mixture of laid-back intimacy and stressed-out intensity, the story pushes the characters out of their not-so-comfortable comfort zones and into an uncharted territory that’s variously tantalizing, terrifying and forgiving.
The pull of mystery and adventure is there from the get-go, in the traveling shot that opens the film: a view through the windshield of a car moving down a two-lane highway.

In his latest uInterview, writer, director and actor Michael Jai White spoke about the unusual concept of his latest film Outlaw Johnny Black and how he was able to juggle three roles.
White explained to uInterview founder Erik Meers how his movie is unique as it is “a mashup of several things.” The film has elements of “faith-based, blaxploitation, western, action, comedy, drama with Kung Fu.” White specifically intended Outlaw Johnny Black to have multiple genres in order to offer “something no one else has seen before.”
At its core, the film is “a story of loss and a story of forgiveness,” according to White, but he had to make sure that the audience could relate in some way. “During young Johnny’s life where young Johnny feels the loss of that parent and as does the audience,” he shared. “And that audience wants that retribution just as bad as Johnny does.

Tipping their Stetsons to a passel of 1960s Spaghetti Westerns — everything from “A Fistful of Dollars” to “They Call Me Trinity” — and the sort of 1970s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, director-star Michael Jai White and co-star (and co-writer) Byron Keith Minns have cobbled together “Outlaw Johnny Black,” a fitfully funny but uncomfortably overlong entertainment best appreciated by movie buffs who share the pair’s affection for the genre tropes and stereotypes they seriocomically recycle.
Not nearly as free-wheeling and fleet-footed as “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 satirical comedy that cast White as a Shaft-like action hero, the new film nonetheless provides more than a few good laughs, even when it seems to be taking horse opera clichés a tad too respectfully, and showcases a fine cast of actors dedicated to both the silliness and the seriousness of the enterprise.

Michael Jai White wanted to create a trilogy of movies set in different time periods, with Outlaw Johnny Black as a Western homage. The cast of Outlaw Johnny Black is exceptional, and their performances brought the characters to life. The movie combines comedy with social commentary, and the messages have resonated with audiences in test screenings.
In Outlaw Johnny Black, the titular character has vowed to avenge his father's death by killing Brett Clayton. However, in the process, he becomes a wanted man. Posing as Reverend Fairman to stay below the radar, he ends up in a small mining town that has been taken over by the notorious Land Baron.
Michael Jai White is the star and director of Outlaw Johnny Black. He also co-wrote the movie with co-star Byron Minns. Outlaw Johnny Black also stars Anika Noni Rose, Erica Ash, Kym Whitley, Kevin Chapman, Glynn Turman, and Barry Bostwick.

The latest Netflix true-crime docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” has tapped into America’s obsession with the case of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh. Its new three-part series climbed to the top of the streaming charts in the latest Wrap Report, which highlights television viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs.
Whether by sheer luck or incredible programming wiles, the docuseries was timed perfectly to the five-week trial of one of the most prominent families in the South that has dominated headlines and been a fixture on news networks for months. The Netflix series drove even more interest in the June 2021 killings of Murdaugh’s wife Maggie and son Paul as it dropped on Feb. 22, the beginning of the week-long period covered by this report.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for We Have A GhostThe TikTok montage in the horror comedy We Have a Ghost is right about the reality of a modern horror problem. In We Have a Ghost, a family discovers that their new home is haunted by the friendly ghost Ernest (David Harbour). The youngest son in the family, Kevin (Jahi Winston), befriends Ernest after catching him on video. When Kevin's father, Frank (Anthony Mackie), posts videos of the ghost online, Ernest becomes a viral sensation.
To show how famous Ernest has become, Netflix's We Have a Ghost launches into a montage of TikTok videos, in which users re-create elements of the Ernest videos, not unlike TikTokers re-creating the Wednesday dance scene. In We Have a Ghost the videos include people copying the shocked scream of Kevin's mom, Melanie (Erica Ash), when she first sees Ernest, and Ernest's run through a wall. People...

The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin’s family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become targets of the CIA.
There was a certain sense of charm, wonder, and childlike optimism brimming all throughout Christopher Landon’s We Have a Ghost that I couldn’t get enough of. In many ways, this is a film that is heavily inspired by Steven Spielberg’s filmography, most notably E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. Heck, at times it might even borrow from that film too much, but I love that Landon was hugely inspired by so many great projects for this film.

Writer/Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) evokes the family-friendly Amblin movies of yesterday for his latest, Netflix’s We Have a Ghost. Wearing its formative gateway horror influences on its sleeves, We Have a Ghost blends nostalgic family adventure-induced charm with Landon’s distinct ability to render authentic characters to an affecting degree. While it threatens to overstay its welcome, the tender adventure delivers ghostly charm, poignant family bonds, and humor that’ll appeal to new generations of budding genre fans.

"Amblin-esque" is a term that gets thrown around a lot, and it mostly means "This movie/TV show features kids on bikes." But "We Have a Ghost," a sweet-natured family-friendly haunted house pic from "Freaky" director Christopher Landon, really has that Amblin vibe going for it. Were it not for some very modern social media-based jokes, it feels like "We Have a Ghost" could've easily fit into the late '80s and early '90s, when Steven Spielberg reigned supreme and everyone was trying to ape his style and, for lack of a better word, brand. Indeed, "We Have a Ghost" feels like the result of decades of Amblin-like pics and their various clones. It owes more than a few things to movies like "E.T.", "Poltergeist," "Beetlejuice," and even, believe it or not, the "Casper" movie from 1995.

The best horror movies succeed by tapping into our collective nightmares. They take the big ideas that haunt us at night — the things we’re all afraid to admit terrify us — and give us a thrilling catharsis by bringing them to life on screen. Great horror filmmakers understand that there’s already more than enough darkness in our hearts, and all they have to do is reflect it back at us. So it was only a matter of time before a brave director took on the one bogeyman whose portrayal has evaded even the most twisted auteurs: David Harbour in a bowling shirt with a bad combover.
While it’s hard to judge anyone for looking bad when they’re damned to spend eternity wearing whatever they happened to have on when they died, it’s worth noting that ghosts have a relatively simple dress code to follow. When it...

News of a fresh horror comedy from Christopher Landon, director of the joyously silly “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, should be greeted with cautious optimism at the very least. He’s been working in the space for some time now, having also co-written and directed “Freaky,” “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” and the more straightforward “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and understands how to thread that particular needle better than most. His latest feels like both a natural next step and also something of a departure: a family-friendly haunted-house story releasing on Netflix. Unlike his previous efforts, however, “We Have a Ghost” fails to capture what makes this particular genre hybrid so much fun.

Filmmaker Christopher Landon loves a good scare. But while the man behind such contemporary horror hits as five (!!) of the “Paranormal Activity” films, “Happy Death Day,” “Freaky,” and “Viral” is best associated with his terrifying stuff, he’s got other tricks and treats on his mind.
Landon’s latest film, the Netflix outing “We Have a Ghost,” which he wrote and directed, smacks of horror — it follows a family, including Anthony Mackie, Erica Ash, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, and Niles Fitch, who move into a new house and discover it comes complete with a ghost, played by David Harbour — it’s also a bit more family-friendly, certainly funny, and driven by ideas about what happens when something gets big on the internet. It’s another evolution for Landon, who seems more than ready to subvert expectations when it comes to what he’s interested in making.
