The band came up with its name because their agent was a history buff, and knew that a man named Jethro Tull was an 18th-century British agricultural pioneer who invented the seed drill, and thought the name was unusual enough to stick in listeners' minds.

Band members have included Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Clive Bunker, Glenn Cornick, John Evan, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, Barriemore Barlow, Tony Iommi.

The band won the 1989 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.

In 1982, they were supported by a then little known band called Marillion at Theakston's Music Festival at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire. Four years later, in June 1986, they supported Marillion as their special guests when they headlined the Milton Keynes Bowl.
