Maria Menounos Manifested Her First Leading Movie Role — and She’s Just Getting Started
Image
For more than two decades, Maria Menounos has been on TV. Whether it was interviewing celebrities on “Access Hollywood,” hosting a WWE special or a “Challenge” reunion or doing an arc on “One Tree Hill,” she’s been a staple on television. However, it wasn’t until this year that she landed the lead in her first film — and a TV Christmas movie was the ideal situation.

“I’ve never had to carry anything on my own,” says Menounos, who notes that both she and her husband, AfterBuzz TV creator Keven Undergaro, are “obsessed” with Christmas. “I have always wanted to be a part of the Christmas movie lineup. I put it on my vision board last year.”

The vision was brought to life. Last year, Ryan McPartland, who has appeared in a few holiday flicks over the years, brought it to her attention at the exact right time.

‘High School Musical’ Stars Reunite for ‘A Christmas Dance Reunion.’ Here’s How the Lifetime Movie Came Together
Image
While made-for-tv holiday movies have enjoyed an explosion in popularity in the past five years, they’re not a new phenomenon for Lifetime. The network has been making ripped-from-the-headlines films for three decades at this point and has the whole process down to a science: a few months for development and writing, 15 days for filming, a few weeks for post-production, and voila — a feel-good romance ready for air. In the case of “A Christmas Dance Reunion,” Covid-19 precautions meant that the production, which filmed in November 2020 at the height of the pandemic, had a little extra wiggle room. But not much.

“A Christmas Dance Reunion” reunites “High School Musical” stars Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman as a pair of childhood friends who rekindle their romance — and love for dance — when the hotel where they spent their childhood holidays announces it’s closing. Director and co-writer Brian Herzlinger, who has made several movies for Lifetime,...

Holiday Movies Coming to Television in 2020
Image
Christmas might not be until December, but some networks are slapping on their mittens and gearing up for the holiday season as early as October.

Families often find themselves gathered around the TV binging some of Hallmark or Lifetime’s latest Christmas-themed films, and this year is no exception. With people around the country encouraged to stay indoors and avoid crowded locations, Variety breaks down a list of feel-good Christmas movies to tune into this year.

As part of Lifetime’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” holiday movie slate, the channel will premiere 30 original TV movies beginning Oct. 23 and running through mid-December. In its efforts to diversify the stories it showcases, Lifetime said it worked with GLAAD and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) for its first-ever LGBTQ-led film “The Christmas Setup” and “A Sugar & Spice Holiday” centering on an Asian American family.

More films will be added to the list as networks announce them.

SAG-AFTRA Leaders Fight Over Corey Feldman Sexual Harassment Allegations
Image
The SAG-AFTRA national board has reprimanded Los Angeles president Patricia Richardson over her refusal to remove actor Corey Feldman, who has been accused of sexual assault, from guild’s Los Angeles local sexual harassment committee.

Feldman has issued a strong denial of the allegations. Richardson responded by blasting the national board and accused it of employing a “smear tactic.”

The dust-up emerged Monday during the meeting of the national board and stemmed from Richardson’s refusal last month to remove Feldman from the Los Angeles local’s Sexual Harassment Committee after receiving “detailed complaints” from several women.

“If SAG-AFTRA does not respond appropriately to credible allegations of sexual harassment, abuse and assault such as those at issue, it will not retain the ability to act as a respected, proactive force combatting sexual harassment, abuse and assault in our Union and our industry,” the resolution said.

The resolution did not name Feldman.

Corey Feldman's (My) Truth Documentary Review: Is It Worth the Price of a Ticket?
Corey Feldman
Corey Feldman hit one of the bigger snafus of his career during the long-anticipated premiere of his new documentary (My) Truth: The Rape of 2 Coreys. He had long promised to deliver the names of several individuals involved with a pedophile ring in Hollywood. But on the night of the live stream, fans who had paid $20 to watch the movie didn't actually get to see it. Touted as a one-time event, many believed that the technical disruption was a hoax. That has now proven to be false. And it has been confirmed that the server showing the movie came under attack from an unknown source. The live premiere screening went along as planned, held at the prestigious DGA with quite a few big names in attendance. There was a whole movie. It does exist as fans would eventually find out later. And perhaps the most shocking thing is just how well...

Corey Feldman Says His New Doc Will Identify Hollywood Men Who Sexually Abused Him as Child Star
Corey Feldman
Corey Feldman says he will finally name his sexual abusers from when he was a child actor in a new documentary he’s releasing called “(My) Truth: The Rape of 2 Coreys.”

Feldman will use the real names of the people he says abused him when he was a young actor, something he did not do when he published his 2013 memoir and revealed that he had been abused. And Feldman will also reveal who he believes abused his frequent co-star Corey Haim, who died in 2010 of pneumonia.

“The last two years have been insurmountable, but I believe that with great risk comes great reward,” Feldman said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “And I believe the reward in all of this, if nothing else, will be that these guys are finally exposed. I’m hoping that what happened to [Harvey] Weinstein [will happen], that multiple victims will come forward. And as a result, these...

That's great news! Be My Valentine? Be Careful What You Wish For: Indiewire @ Hulu
Brian Herzlinger at an event for Pretty Persuasion (2005)
The course of true love never did run smooth, as demonstrated in many of the Valentine's-inspired selections to Indiewire's latest curation of Hulu's Documentaries page.  While not all of the featured films paint a negative picture of love and relationships, they all must contend with some difficulties, if not outright tragedies, along the way. Hapless romantic Brian Herzlinger decides to follow through on his nearly lifelong crush on Drew Barrymore by tracking down the Hollywood star and getting her to agree to go out on a date. "My Date With Drew" is the entertaining and likeable result of what can happen when you take on an if not impossible, at least improbable, dream. Another improbable love story is found in a most unlikely place in Jon Nealon's "Goodbye Hungaria." A Palestinian refugee and an American volunteer meet at a Hungarian refugee camp, and while wading through the quagmire of international politics,...

Drew Barrymore and Brian Herzlinger in My Date with Drew (2004)
There are the documentaries that delve into great tragedy and triumph. There are the documentaries that dig into deeply personal tales. And then there are the documentaries that ... aren't so epic. My Date with Drew wasn't the sort of movie that would ever take the festival circuit by storm, burrowing into the public consciousness, but with earnestness and excitement it still wins a spot on the should-watch pile of films.

Director and star Brian Herzlinger is the typical struggling Hollywood hanger-on. He moved to the big city, trying to find his big break, but the farthest that he got was winning $1,100 on a pilot game show. The answer that won him the cash -- "Drew Barrymore." Taa-daa! Fate! Kismet! See, he's been in love with Drew for years, so he cooks up a scheme to try and get a date with the famous actress, and films his journey to the Barrymore,...

Blog Trends From My Bunk 04/28/10
In Hollywood, a magic 8-ball used to just be a vial of cocaine that allowed producers to think they're flying. But now it's also going to be a movie about an oversize billiard ball with a blue liquid-immersed 20-sided die inside it that enables indecisive people to make important life choices. For example, some exec at Paramount asked one, "should we make a movie based on the Magic 8-Ball novelty toy?" And it answered, "My reply is no." So the studio exec put the greenlight on it faster than he could snort a line.

Is the idea of a Magic 8-Ball movie surprising? To be honest, I thought this project had already been announced back when everyone was foretelling what other games and toys would follow Monopoly, Battleship, Ouija Board, Stretch Armstrong, etc., into multiplexes. Now it just seems like everyone's unveiling the appropriate 8-ball-related snark they've been working on...

I'm a Polar Bear, Get Me Outta Here

"Earth"

The Mouse House launches its brand new nature documentary arm Disneynature with an Earth Day premiere of this year-in-the-life-of-our-planet feature. The bad news is that "Earth" recycles a lot of the footage from the BBC series "Planet Earth," which anyone who feels the least bit smug about their TV already owns. The good news is that "Planet Earth" is pretty sick, and seeing it on the big screen is bound to be an improvement over even the glossiest home HD experience.. Patrick Stewart narrated the U.

Scenes We Love: Grease 2
After a killer week, an on-going screening of the dramas and torments of the North and South miniseries, and thoughts of pacifist guntoters, I needed a break. No, scratch that -- I needed a "Cool Rider."

While many girls squee'd over Olivia Newton John and Grease, I always thought Grease 2 was so much cooler. (Age brought a better appreciation for the original, but nostalgia never dies! ... especially when the Pink Lady leader got an awesome reversible jacket to quell that terrible pink!) And for years, I was convinced I was the only one in love with 2 until a little film called My Date with Drew. Oh yes, there were die-hard Grease 2 fans out there, and they included Ms. Barrymore herself. Filmmaker Brian Herzlinger loved it so much he divided the world into two categories -- those who loved the sequel, and those who didn't.

The thing that really got my heart,...
