Filmmaking is incredibly hard work, said everybody who's ever made one for our enjoyment. It’s especially a trial by fire for inexperienced movie magicians, hoping that the wand will strike at least once or twice and that they just survive. With his reputation as a BTS guru with Blue Underground and Dark Sky Films in full swing, Severin Films’ David Gregory set out to make his feature debut, Plague Town (2008)—a tense homage to classic British and foreign horror infused with a fresh feel for the present. And now, a Blu from Severin that houses not only a surprisingly effective chiller, but also behind-the-scenes features that painstakingly showcase a vision dragged kicking and screaming all the way to the screening room.
It is odd for me to be discussing a film this recent. However, it makes perfect sense in context to the creators; Gregory and his co-writer John Cregan...

The film will see a theatrical release this spring and will be followed by a DVD and VOD release. 'Five Dances' follows his emotional transition from fear of the unknown to the exhilaration of a perfectly executed performance. 'Five Dances' made its debut as the opening night film at the 2013 Dance on Camera Film Festival at Lincoln Center.

Writer, journalist and Fangoria magazine editor Chris Alexander is cutting his teeth in the director's chair.
His feature film debut for Autonomy Pictures with Blood for Irina - a psychological, experimental vampire tale - is complete. Alexander approached Autonomy Pictures with a micro-budget proposal, the desire to make a personal horror film, a fever dream inspired by Herzog, Rollin and Franco.
The film was shot in five days at a crumbling 70 year old waterfront motel set for demolition in Toronto, Canada. Autonomy Pictures executive producers Derek Curl (House of the Devil), David Gregory (The Theatre Bizarre) and Lewis Tice of Danger After Dark, already impressed with Alexander’s revitalization of Fangoria since taking over as editor-in-chief, were excited to see what he would do with a genre-based underground concept, budget and schedule.
The film is currently in post-production and will hit film festivals later this year. You'll find a teaser trailer inside.

Adam Rehmeier's The Bunny Game gained notoriety last fall by being one of the recent victims of a BBFC ban. The film was refused certification by the board, who called it, "unacceptable to the public". While the film remains unreleasable in the UK, fledgling Us distributor Autonomy Pictures have decided to make this their first foray into the home video market. Autonomy Pictures is made up of three home video veterans with lots of experience in controversial films. Lewis Tice of Danger After Dark, David Gregory of Severin Films, and Derek Curl of Tla Releasing, have gotten into the home video game in an interesting way here, and I wish them the best. The star-studded ultra-gory Satan Hates You has a DVD cover for us to enjoy. The film is coming from cult label Danger After Dark on October 10th. James Felix McKenny of Automation fame directs.
Dubbed “a clever collision of flamboyant gore and social commentary” by Variety, the over-the-top shocker follows Marc (Don Wood), a homicidal maniac driven by demons buried deep within his soul, and Wendy (Christine Spencer), a young girl who lives life fast and hard without a second’s thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell?
Tla President Derek Curl said: “We couldn’t think of a better title to re-launch Danger After Dark with. Satan Hates You has all the makings of a true cult classic, and we can’t wait to bring it to the fans.”

Hard to say for certain whether or not Satan Hates You will turn out to be anything more than a bunch of forced humor and a pile of stunt casting. I'll be honest, it certainly appears that way. But I'm curious to give it a whirl and, admittedly, today's look at the DVD cover art is pretty awesome.
Satan Hates You is an over-the-top shocker full of blood, gore and plenty of appearances by genre favorites. Appearances are made by Larry Fessenden (Habit, I Sell The Dead), Angus Scrimm (Phantasm, Alias), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), Debbie Rochon (Night of the Living Dead, Slime City Massacre and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead) and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, One Flew Over The Cukoo’s Nest). Satan Hates You was written and directed by James Felix McKenny (Automations, Hypothermia).

While stumbling around the cyber maze for our weekly Wtf Friday video feature, we came across a pretty bitching untitled viral video that does a hell of a lot more than just bare its fangs.
Upon doing some digging (well okay, all we really did was click the "Show More" button on YouTube), it's become apparent that said viral is actually a video for Jim Mickle’s post-apocalyptic vampire tale Stake Land (review here). Having just watched the flick, we can honestly say this vampire tale is pretty damned epic. As you'll see from the video, these creatures aren't the usual sparkling, brooding, pretty forever-teens that have been jammed down our throats over the last several years. They're blissfully ugly, unabashedly vicious, and just what we needed!
To keep track of this vampire uprising, keep an eye on the On to New Eden website.

#19. The Innkeepers - Ti West Production on Ti West's The Innkeepers has been completed mid year range. If the filmmaker is holding out, its because he possibly has Sundance (Park City at Midnight) or SXSW in mind. Distributor Dark Sky Films certainly would want a launch pad festival release for the film. This prediction is pure logic. Sara Paxton and Pat Healy (Great World of Sound) star as Claire and Luke, the last two clerks left working the place before it’s scheduled to be shut down after over 100 years in business. Before that happens, they’re anxious to prove that the place does indeed have restless spirits dwelling within its walls, and subsequent odd occurrences seem to prove that they’re right. * Producers: Derek Curl, Larry Fessenden, Peter Phok and Ti West(Ioncinema.com Preview Page // IMDb Link)...

Sara Paxton ("Last House on the Left") seems to be ready for another dose of thrills. The actress will be starring in "The Innkeepers" from "The House of the Devil" director/writer Ti West. Dark Sky Films is producing and filming started this week in Connecticut. Also cast are Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis and George Riddle. Paxton and Healy are in as the last two clerks in a haunted hotel that's a hundred years old. In the last days prior to closing, a few final strange guests come to stay. The shoot is happening at the Yankee Pedlar Inn which is a real New England hotel that has been thought of been haunted for quite some time. Derek Curl, Peter Phok, Larry Fessenden and West produce. "The Last House On the Left" may be a genre filled with many-a-poor-performance, but Paxton's work was admirable and the actress is one to be watched.

What a difference a week makes. On Monday we put up an interview with director Ti West in which it sounded like The Haunting in Georgia would be his next project, but today came the news that he's been tapped to helm a haunted hotel film entitled Innkeepers.

Derek Curl, Fessenden, and Peter Phok produce. The deal was concluded at Sundance this week between West and Mpi's Executive VP Greg Newman.

Later I did race from NewFest (in Chelsea) to the con to catch the Vindication screening. I got there about 10 minutes late, but the room was standing room only. I’ve already seen the film, so I’m glad my butt wasn’t taking a seat from someone who hasn’t seen this really f-ing awesome film. Keep an eye out in this blog for more info and interviews from the cast and crew in the near future.
