Despite only releasing less than a year ago, Nick Frost's folk horror/comedy Get Away has already fallen under many people's radars. Also starring the effortlessly funny Aisling Bea, Heartstopper’s Sebastian Croft, and young actress Maisie Ayres, Get Away opened to positive reviews and earned a strong, "certified fresh" 76% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Now, 10 months on from its festival debut at Fantastic Fest, Get Away is finally a streaming hit in America.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several music videos directed by Steffen Haars and/or Flip van der Kuil. Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil are two Dutch directors prone to controversy. They like to stir the pot. So much so that their English-language debut Krazy House, flopped mayorly, and got scathing reviews from critics, including our own Mel Valentin. This is not a new thing for them. New Kids Nitro (2011) ended with an incredibly tasteless Auschwitz-joke, that ruffled feathers left and right, and New Kids Turbo (2010) before that was also of questionable taste according to some critics. The two films itself were spin-offs of the...

The Black Sunday Film Festival is back with blood on its boots and a mission to celebrate the boldest voices in genre cinema. Now in its sixth edition, the Essex-based event has announced a striking line-up for 2025, running from 1st to 3rd May at Colchester’s Firstsite. Championing independent horror, dark sci-fi, psychological thrillers and everything in between, the festival has carved out a reputation for unearthing daring new work from both the UK and beyond. This year’s programme is no exception.
Opening night sets the tone with three wildly different but equally provocative features. Kaye Adelaide’s The Rebrand makes its UK debut, turning influencer culture inside out in a mockumentary that promises satire with bite. That’s followed by Mary Beth McAndrews’ Bystanders, an unflinching revenge thriller that left festival audiences reeling during its previous run on the circuit. The triple-bill concludes with the Essex premiere of Krazy House,...

Have you ever wondered what Midsommar would look like as a horror-comedy? Well, look no further than Get Away. Directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away takes all the tropes of folk horror and throws them right back at the audience. It is bizarre in tone but held together by the comedic performances of its leads, Nick Frost (who also wrote the movie) and Aisling Bea, who is a household name in the UK comedy scene. It captures that eerie unease of the closed commune environment from an outsider's perspective. Yet, the protagonists are so abruptly blissful and jovial that the movie is tonally different to the rest of the folk horror subgenre. Get Away is gloriously self-indulgent and encourages the audience to move away from the usual seriousness of the subgenre and just relax, and that’s what makes it such a wild ride.

From a screenplay by Nick Frost and directed by Steffen Haars, “Get Away” (2025) is a horror-comedy that stars Frost and Aisling Bea as the Smiths—a family of four going on a holiday to the island of Svalta in Sweden, with special interest on watching the Karantan, the eight-hour-long play arranged by the locals on the island. However, their arrival is met with open hostility by the locals, and strange events ensue on the island.
Get Away (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis Who are the Smiths?
We are introduced to the very British family, The Smiths: father Richard (Nick Frost), mother Susan (Aisling Bea), sister Jessie (Maisie Ayres), and brother Sam (Sebastian Croft). The four members seem to be the quintessential British family of the modern age, with the teenagers especially coming off as bratty or disinterested in comparison to their parents.

“Nick Frost in a horror-comedy” is the sort of sentence that inevitably invites comparisons to Shaun Of The Dead. Get Away is a markedly different beast to Frost’s iconic 2004 film debut: this is a horror-comedy set in Northern Sweden rather than North London, and there’s less of an affectionate genre homage going on here: while Get Away’s creepy Scandinavians and their strange rituals occasionally evoke Midsommar, there’s more of a droll holiday-gone-wrong vibe — Eden Lake meets National Lampoon’s Vacation, if you will.
That is cemented from minute one, with Cliff Richard’s ‘Summer Holiday’ blaring through the speakers of a hire car. This is where we meet Frost — on both acting and screenwriting duties — in pure dad mode as the affable Richard, cheerfully blurting out lines like, “All aboard the Skylark!” Aisling Bea, as his wife Susan, ably matches his energy, brightly calling him “Daddy...

Nick Frost takes his family on holiday to Sweden and things go terribly, gore-infestedly wrong. Here’s our Get Away review.
At a Q&a for his latest film Get Away, Nick Frost told the audience that the film was inspired by the holidays with his ex-wife to her home country of Sweden. Frost felt he was never quite welcome after getting off the ferry to a small Swedish island, and his experiences as an outsider in Sweden are brought vividly to life in Get Away.
Frost plays Richard, who embarks on a holiday at Svälta, a tiny little Swedish island, just as the community is preparing for their annual Karäntan celebrations. Before the family even steps foot on the island, they’re warned not to go there by an unfriendly cafe owner. Do the Brits listen? Obviously not.
What follows is an amusing comedy but a lacklustre horror film...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Get Away!
The latest hilarious horror happening from the mad mind of Nick Frost landed in theaters earlier this month in the form of Get Away. The Steffen Haars-directed picture follows the Smith family, led by their patriarch Richard (Frost), as they embark on a vacation. The vacation in question revolves around venturing to a strange island to partake in the native population's annual celebration.
Tension boils over in the third act, as the standoffish natives go to battle with the Smiths. While the likes of Richard, Susan (Aisling Bea), Jessie (Maisie Ayres), and Sam (Sebastian Croft) seem to be on the defensive to begin with, it quickly becomes apparent that the Smith family is relishing in bringing this bloodbath upon the island.

Steffen Haars brings Nick Frost's latest sadistic story to life in Get Away. The 44-year-old director has been working on feature films and television programs for over two decades, finding success with Dutch franchise New Kids. Haars first collaborated with Frost earlier this year with Krazy House, a violent comedy not unlike what unfolds in Get Away, though it took a more surreal approach to its sitcom-set world.
Beyond leading man Frost, Haars directs Sebastian Croft, best known for playing a young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, and Maisie Ayres, who is making her feature debut in Get Way. Croft and Ayres portray the Smith family's two children, both of whom neutrally embark on a holiday to a Swedish island to participate in the native population's mysterious festival. Shortly after arriving, however, the group learn there's a serial killer on the loose.

Sunday update: Walt Disney Studios’ “Moana 2” continued to dominate the box office in its second weekend, taking in a projected $52 million domestically as its worldwide total reached $600 million. It shattered “Frozen II’s” post-Thanksgiving weekend record, which grossed $35.1 million in the first weekend of December, 2019. Universal’s “Wicked” is second with $36.4 million, followed by “Gladiator II” with $12.6 million, “Pushpa 2 — The Rule” with $9.3 million, and “Red One” with $7 million. Among new openers, “Solo Leveling: ReAwakening” made a splash with $2.4 million and A24’s “Y2K” disappointed with just $2.1 million.

A bloody, brilliant blast that's easily one of my favorite films of the year, Get Away pays homage to folk horror while cleverly subverting the genre at the same time, all while delivering the gory goods every step of the way. Written by Nick Frost (who also stars in the film) and directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away follows a delightfully dysfunctional family on a vacation to an isolated Swedish island where the locals are preparing for an ancient festival and have their unsettling sights set on the island's new tourists as the unwanted guests of honor.
With Get Away now in theaters via IFC Films and Shudder, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with writer/star Nick Frost and star Aisling Bea about their killer new horror comedy, including exploring family dynamics, filming in Finland, and keeping viewers on their toes while having a bloody good time.

In the horror comedy Get Away, an Anglo-Irish family go on vacation to Svälta, a place that sounds ideal for horror: a small Swedish island where in the 19th century a supposed pandemic caused a prolonged quarantine, death, famine, and cannibalism. Despite the classic warnings, the family takes a ferry to Svälta with the idea of attending the upcoming Karantän, a festivity connected to what happened 200 years ago. Once in Svälta, the protagonists meet a terribly hostile commune (led by Anitta Suikkari's character) and their Airbnb host (Eero Milonoff), who soon enough emanates a creepy vibe. The Nick Frost-penned, Steffen Haars-directed Get Away offers a constant dose of humor, plays with horror tropes, and evokes...

It’s one of the most timeless setups in the horror pantheon: a group of unsuspecting travelers visit a remote and insular community, only to find themselves sucked into a ritual that places their lives in danger. From “The Wicker Man” to “Midsommar,” the folk horror subgenre has thrived by exploiting our fear of interrupting a tradition that we were never meant to be a part of. The juxtaposition of ignorant tourism and seemingly backwards folk religions produces the kind of gruesome friction that horror filmmakers love to exploit. Now, Nick Frost is ready to find out if audiences are willing to laugh about it too.
Frost writes and stars in “Get Away,” a new horror comedy from director Steffen Haars that applies a dry, British sense of humor to the Pagan Ritual Gone Wrong genre. Best known for his collaborations with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg on the Three...

With IFC Films and Shudder preparing to take viewers on one hell of a vacation when Get Away opens in theaters beginning December 6th, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Steffen Haars and co-stars Sebastian Croft and Maisie Ayres about their new film, including balancing horror with comedy, embracing the movie's intriguing twists,...

This review contains spoilers for Get Away, which premieres Friday, December 6th in theaters
Folk horror is a robust subgenre that first entered the mainstream in the '70s, with the movies Blood on Satan's Claw, The Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General paving the way for the niche's current relevance. Folk horror explores the uncomfortable underbelly of rural settings through an emphasis on belief, superstition, sacrifice, and legacy. More importantly, the subgenre has experienced a recent renaissance with popular genre movies like Midsommar, Sightseers, Men, and The Witch.
Modern horror has helped this subgenre evolve, and director Steffen Haars and screenwriter/star Nick Frost crafted a potent answer to this movement with Get Away. Their movie presents a familiar story, where an unsuspecting family vacations to a foreign country that harbors a dark secret and tradition in the woods. However, Get Away works hard to reinvent the genre and surprise...

A family holiday takes an unexpected direction in Get Away, the latest comedy from the keyboard of Nick Frost – and by far his goriest to date. A hit at Fantastic Fest and Sitges, it’s now going on general release, and I spoke with some of its creators and stars about how the bloody pieces were put together. First up is a conversation with supporting cast members Maisie Ayers and Sebastian Croft, who play teenagers Jessie and Sam, as well as director Steffen Haars.
I had first encountered Steffen’s work a few years ago, in the form of the inimitable Ron Goossens, Low-Budget Stuntman, and when we talked we agreed that although Get Away is rather less sweet-natured, the two have a similar vibe.

Written by and starring the comedic genius Nick Frost, known for his roles in cult classics like Spaced and The Cornetto Trilogy, this hilarious and horrifying hybrid film from Swedish director Steffen Haars follows a hapless family as they embark on a seemingly idyllic holiday to a remote Swedish island.
Their peaceful getaway quickly spirals into a nightmare when they encounter the wrath of the island’s eccentric and fiercely protective residents. To make matters worse, a notorious serial killer is on the prowl.
We recently spoke to Nick Frost, comedienne Aisling Bea, Steffen Haars, Horrible Histories star Sebastian Croft and newcomer Maisie Ayres about their fun shoot in Finnish wilderness.
We also chatted to Frost about the possibility of a sequel for the film and the hilarious alternative title he had in mind for Get Away. Meanwhile Bea chatted about her own relationship with the horror genre. Elsewhere Croft...

There's a strong current of folk horror titles about outsiders entering isolated, weird communities and succumbing to their horrors. Think The Wicker Man, Midsommar, Apostle, The Third Day, Wake Wood, The Lair of the White Worm, The Ritual, Dagon, Population 436, Offseason, and so on. In many ways, the subgenre feels like a post-colonialist response to the centuries of Christian imperialism that subjugated small pagan communities, especially considering many of these horror films came from the UK, the former kingpins of imperialism. In these films and shows, the occult rural communities get their revenge on the more 'sophisticated' Christian outsiders from the big city. The new film Get Away exists in this canon, but wickedly plays with its structure and themes.
The film is written by and stars Nick Frost, pairing him yet again with filmmaker Steffen Haars; they made an almost complementary film around the same time, the batsh*t wild Krazy House.

Director Steffen Haars (Krazy House) reteams with actor Nick Frost once more on horror comedy Get Away, and Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive poster that warns you to get ready for a killer holiday ahead.
Previously titled Svalta, IFC Films releases Get Away in theaters on December 6, 2024. Get Away will slash onto Shudder in 2025.
In Get Away, “The Smith family’s much-needed vacation to the remote Swedish island of Svalta takes a dark turn when they arrive during preparations for a mysterious local festival that celebrates a dark history. Unsettled by the unfriendly locals and strange rituals, they try to make the best of their trip, stubbornly enjoying the island’s isolation and natural beauty. However, as the festival looms closer, the family realizes something far more sinister is unfolding—especially when they discover that a serial killer is on the loose.”
Expect a wild holiday ahead indeed for the Smith family.

"I feel like we are being watched..." Sky Cinema has posted their official UK trailer for the upcoming release of a horror comedy film titled Get Away from director Steffen Haars. It premiered at Fantastic Fest and Sitges and will also open in the US in December as well as in the UK from January. A family's vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they're on is inhabited by a serial killer. But who exactly is it? The Smith family arrives on a tiny Swedish island called Svälta where they get into all kinds of trouble. Fantastic Fest adds: "Fueled with dark humor, mean jokes, and outrageous scenes, Get Away will mislead you all the way to an unexpected, twisted ending. So come on board and enjoy the trip to Svälta!" Starring Nick Frost, Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, Maisie Ayres, and Eero Milonoff.

Name a more iconic duo than horror and comedy. This year's Fantastic Fest celebrated this genre dynamic with more than a few films, including the World Premiere of Get Away, Nick Frost's second team-up with filmmaker Steffen Haars. Like their first feature together, Krazy House, this one plays around with the classic network TV family sitcom and contrasts it with a heavy dose of terror.

Nick Frost writes and stars in the horror comedy Get Away. Here’s the trailer for the film once known as Svalta.
Nick Frost both writes and stars in the folk horror comedy Get Away – a movie originally going by the name Svalta. The synopsis reads as follows:
Looking forward to a vacation on the small Swedish island of Svälta, the Smith family is unsettled by the unfriendly mainlanders who advise them to avoid the island at all costs, especially during the Karantan festival. But the 4-member family is in deep need of some time away & stubbornly decides to take the ferry anyway. On the island, the locals are rather rude & unwelcoming, and their behavior suggests that some big event is about to happen. Is it a cult? Is there a sacrifice in the works? Seemingly unbothered by so much discourtesy and drama, the family enjoys a swim in the sea,...

Back in 2022, it was announced that Fighting with My Family co-stars Nick Frost and Lena Headey were going to reunite to work on the serial killer thriller Svalta, which was set to start filming in Finland soon… but then Headey had to drop out of the project due to scheduling issues before it started rolling in 2023 and was replaced by Aisling Bea, whose previous credits include This Way Up, Living with Yourself, and Home Sweet Home Alone. In August, IFC Films and the Shudder streaming service acquired the North American distribution rights to Svalta, which is now going by the title Get Away, and the plan is that IFC Films will be giving the movie a theatrical release on December 6th. Get Away will then make its way over to Shudder sometime in 2025… But if you’ve been wondering how the release of Get Away is going to be handled in the U.

Nick Frost scripts and stars in this holiday-gone-wrong comedy-horror, directed by Steffen Haars (New Kids Turbo). Originally known as Svalta, Get Away has a jet-black sense of humour and a fun sting in its tail.
Get Away begins with a British family – dad Richard (Frost), Irish mum Susan (Aisling Bea) and late-teen kids Sam (Sebastian Croft) and Jessie (Maisie Ayres) – driving through the Swedish countryside, on their way to a holiday they’ve booked on a remote island. Along the way, they are repeatedly warned that visiting the island is a terrible idea, not least because of less-than-friendly locals and an annual celebration they will be performing that revolves around the island’s bloody history, in which the British played a grisly part.

Experimentation is essential to filmmaking, but not all experiments are successful. Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil's Dutch action-horror comedy Krazy House is a catastrophic flop. What should have been a 20-minute Adult Swim special is dragged into a 90-minute absurdist bore that attempts to roast corny 90s sitcoms, religious zealotry, and sunshiny dispositions. It's a shame because there's genuine ambition behind the uncanny setup of a studio-audience program morphing into scathing darkness la Kevin Can F**k Himself but Haars and Kuil churn their ideas into an unfunny, sensory-numbing, downright affronting tonal slurry.

How does Kevin Smith feel about receiving his best reviews in years for “The 4:30 Movie,” a film that he shot at his childhood movie theater after purchasing it in 2021?

Smith grew up attending movies at the Atlantic Twin Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, which was later rebranded as the Atlantic Movie House. And like many independent theaters in America, the venue was already struggling before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. But 2020 proved to be a...

In the vein of Midsommar and Sightseers, Steffen Haars Get Away is a vacation nightmare that delivers on its getaway wordplay. Nick Frost writes and stars in this Nordic take on tourism as a cornily comedic and viciously violent invasion. Setups mean to evoke cringe humor as a picture-imperfect family hopes an island escape can reset their moods, cheeseballing through sitcom-like dialogue, but those are necessary facades. Frosts screenplay is an experiment in patience that uses humor as a mask before unleashing its darkest feature, a delightfully deadly payoff made more impactful due to its tonally opposite buildup.

Nick Frost is taking it back to his horror comedy roots in the new trailer for his upcoming film, Get Away. Leaving the world of zombies behind and stepping into a supernatural and slasher vibe, the movie follows Frost as a husband and father who takes his family on a getaway to a desolate Swedish island that may have a serial killer stalking its residents. Helmed by Steffen Haars, the feature-length production is the latest to come from one of the founding members of the uber-popular Dutch comedy group known as New Kids. Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) is best known for his collaborations with friend and co-star Simon Pegg, but recently, he’s been trying to make a name for himself as a solo act. The horror-comedy Get Away proves that Frost has the juice it takes to carry a film, even if the script (which he also wrote) is a bit underdeveloped.
Get Away Review
Get Away follows a family whose idyllic vacation to the Swedish island of Svalta becomes a nightmare when they are met with hostility from the local residents and a psychopathic killer on the loose. Frost’s script certainly deserves points for being unpredictable and not following the beaten path, but his ambitious swings don’t always pay off in a rewarding way.

Nick Frost is a major part of "Shaun of the Dead" which is, without question, one of the greatest horror-comedy films in history. While we impatiently await Frost's reunion with director Edgar Wright and co-star Simon Pegg, it should delight viewers to know that he is back in the genre with "Get Away." It should also delight you, dear reader, to know that the movie is a great deal of fun -- but it all relies on avoiding spoilers. You've been warned.
I recently had the good fortune of seeing the film at this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. While I can't rightfully say it was the best movie I saw at the Fest this year -- that honor goes to "The Wild Robot" -- it is the one that gave me the biggest "i didn't see that coming" moment, which left me grinning and chuckling in delight.
