Brandon Sklenar came to the defense of It Ends With Us and his co-stars in the film amidst a flurry of rumors about behind-the-scenes conflict and criticism over how a movie about domestic abuse was marketed.
Sklenar stated that author Colleen Hoover, who wrote the novel the film is based on, and the women of the film’s cast — Blake Lively, Jenny Slate, Isabela Ferrer, and Amy Morton — “stand for hope, perseverance, and for women choosing a better life for themselves.”

On August 14, after Justin Baldoni’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends with Us” opened to $50 million domestic bucks (and the Blake Lively movie began winning the weekday box office over her husband Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine”), Sony Pictures Entertainment Chair-ceo Tony Vinciquerra had words of praise. He cited Lively for her “passion and commitment to advancing the conversation around domestic violence,” adding: “We love working with Blake, and we want to do 12 more movies with her.”
That’s one perspective. For fans of the Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book and its film adaptation, there’s also a growing distaste for the way Lively and Hoover (both producers on the project and two of its most prominent stars on the circuit) have conducted themselves while marketing a film with such upsetting subject matter. Justin Baldoni, director and star of the new romantic drama It Ends With Us, has enlisted crisis public relations expert Melissa Nathan amid growing speculation about cast tensions during the film’s promotional tour.

Blake Lively is charting a new course with her latest film, It Ends With Us, proving she’s far from just a glamorous face from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Gossip Girl.
In It Ends With Us, the actress, 36, dives into a sea of shadows, portraying Lily Bloom, a woman with a troubled past who relocates to Boston and encounters Ryle Kincaid, played by Jane the Virgin star Justin Baldoni. Note that the latter also wears the director’s hat.

The gossip started earlier this week. Amid the press blitz for the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling romantic drama-slash-domestic violence cautionary tale It Ends With Us, fans started to notice something seemed amiss. The film’s director and co-star, Justin Baldoni (who optioned Hoover’s book in 2019 and is also an executive producer on the project), was doing a lot of solo interviews. Blake Lively, the film’s other main star, was making appearances with castmates and with Hoover, gushing about how great everyone was… except the director...

Blake Lively and Isabela Ferrer not only had an on-screen connection in It Ends With Us, each playing a variation of the lead character Lily Bloom, but they also forged a close bond in real life.
Though their uncanny resemblance may surprise some — down to a mole below their right eyes — they actually didn’t know each other prior to working together on the movie, based on Colleen Hoover’s beloved book of the same name. However, Lively tells The Hollywood Reporter that once she saw Ferrer’s audition tape, she instantly knew they found someone special.
“We were like, ‘This is crazy,'” Lively recalls. “And there were other great actresses who gave great performances, but there was just no one but her. Because even if she didn’t act in a similar way as me or speak in a similar way or have similar mannerisms or look like...

Justin Baldoni wants to pass on the It Ends With Us directing torch to his co-star Blake Lively.
Amid rumored behind-the-scenes drama between the cast and Baldoni, the star and director of the Colleen Hoover novel is distancing himself from directing a sequel.

It Ends With Us is an adaptation of the 2016 Colleen Hoover novel of the same name. It’s only been a couple of weeks since the Summer’s biggest box office smash, y’know those two “fightin’ friends” from the MCU, so it feels a bit odd that a very serious “issue” drama based on a best seller is dropping into the multiplexes. Really, shouldn’t this be an “awards contender” for the much cooler Fall months? Well, literary adaptations other than the “YA” franchises do often get a Summertime release (two years ago Where The Crawdads Sing arrived that July). And this film does star the wife of one of the aforementioned Marvel spandex-wearing icons. Can she lure away some of the Summer cinema crowds as the novel’s heroine who declares It Ends With US?
Oh, the actress mentioned above is Blake Lively, who plays the story’s “main focus”, thirty-something Lily Bloom. We first encounter her as she drives back into her family...

“It Ends With Us” features quite a few familiar faces, between Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate and more, but it also introduces a new actress — one who bears a deeply uncanny resemblance to Lively herself.
Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s book of the same name, “It Ends With Us” tells the story of Lily Bloom, a florist who’s just opened her own flower shop in Boston. When she meets handsome neurosurgeon Ryle (Justin Baldoni) after her father’s funeral, she quickly finds herself falling for him, but only slowly realizes that he’s abusive.
It’s a particularly difficult and frightening situation for Lily, as her own mother was abused by her father, but chose to stay with him. Lily swore to herself she’d never let anyone hurt her or the people she loved as a result. Throughout the film, we see flashbacks to Lily’s adolescence.

Plot: Adapted from the Colleen Hoover novel, Lily overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life. A chance meeting with a neurosurgeon sparks a connection but Lily begins to see sides of him that remind her of her parents’ relationship.
Review: It’s always a tough job adapting any book into a feature-length film. Most book narratives aren’t structured in the same way a movie is, so the pacing can sometimes suffer. Scenes that may break the flow of the film, may be considered vital to book fans. I have no prior experience with Colleen Hoover’s novel, but I understand its popularity. It Ends With Us is as much about romance as it is about stewing in trauma. And because of this desire to be a rom-com at points, the deeper message is lost in the process.

Following the New York premiere of It Ends With Us on Tuesday evening, the first reviews of the film from critics have been coming in, and they’ve been decidedly mixed.

It is no secret that Taylor Swift and Blake Lively go way back. The All I See is You star and Lover singer have been at each others’ side ever since they connected in Australia for a day back in 2015. And they never turned back. You know they are up close once you realise that the trio – James, Betty, and Inez, around whom Swift’s songs Cardigan, Betty, and August revolved, are actually the names of Lively’s kids.
Add to that the fact that she is the godmother of all of them. Their camaraderie and close friendship are admired by the industry at large, even prompting many to think that they might be besties. They might not be wrong. And their friendship might have proved to be a boon in disguise for another actor, Isabela Ferrer.

Consider the source. Colleen Hoover’s “It Ends with Us” is a bestselling love-and-trauma women’s fiction title built on a massive fan base. With the movie adaptation opening Friday, it’s back at #1 on the Amazon Charts after 118 weeks on the list. It has 335, 654 ratings and counting. For context, Booker Prize Longlist title Percival Everett’s “James,” considered one of the best books of 2024, has 13,105 ratings. The difference is 25 to 1.

“Soap opera” is a term that conjures cliché images. In hindsight it’s a rather sexist phrase, like the studio-system category of “women’s pictures.” Soap operas have always dealt, at times in depth, with women’s experiences. When the phrase came into vogue, in the 1960s, soap operas were what housewives watched on network television in the afternoon (I’d watch my mother get absorbed into them). One of the many ways that they were unfairly sneered at is that the culture gave no credibility to the fact that soap operas were a serial form, which allowed them to slip into the nuances of a dramatic situation. Sure, they featured broad acting and a certain mannequin-model handsomeness and beauty, yet they gripped people — mostly women — because there was something vital and alive in them.

In this day and age, a serious topic like that would seem like it deserves a serious movie, one that telegraphs the importance of its subject matter.

It’s fitting that we meet Lily Bloom, the charming but thinly written protagonist of It Ends With Us, marching out of a church. Beneath the surface of wide-eyed smiles and laughs lies a steely resolve. The young woman drove from Boston to her hometown in Maine for her father’s funeral. The event turned out to be a tense affair, one that ends with Lily, tasked with delivering the eulogy, leaving the service altogether. Despite her mother’s earlier pleas, the young woman has no kind words to say about her father. She can’t list five things she liked about him.
The root of this tension becomes clearer later on in this serviceable adaptation of the popular Colleen Hoover novel, directed by and co-starring Justin Baldoni (Jane the Virgin). But until then, Lily (Blake Lively) tends to her new-ish life in Boston. This involves opening the flower shop...
