"I got scammed, Marlene, that's why we're doing this." Cinedigm has revealed a trailer for an experimental indie film titled Giving Birth to a Butterfly, marking the feature directorial debut of Theodore Schaefer. It first premiered in 2021 at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, and is finally getting a proper release after waiting a few years - it's streaming on Fandor this May. "Pure weirdo magic. Like Donnie Darko meets Twin Peaks." After having her identity stolen, a woman, and her son's pregnant girlfriend, bond together on a surreal journey as they attempt to track down the perpetrators. Described by The Austin Chronicle as “a strange and fragile story of family, identity, and the unlikely directions of a search for self," Giving Birth to a Butterfly "mixes melancholy and anxiety with a Lynchian touch" and "takes place in a parallel universe that looks and acts like suburbia, just ever so slightly off.

Sounds like the Blue Bloods episode “Lost Ones” risked losing longtime fans with the introduction of a new love interest for Danny Reagan (Donnie Walhberg). In that Season 13 episode, which aired on Friday, January 20, the CBS procedural introduced Jessica Pimentel (Orange Is the New Black) as retiring detective Laura Acosta, who ended up on a date with Danny after he helped her get disability pension approved. But that possible love connection frustrated fans who’d been shipping Danny and his work partner, Det. Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) ever since he lost his wife, Linda (Amy Carlson), in a helicopter accident. Jessica Pimentel as Laura Acosta and Abigail Hawk as Abigail Baker on ‘Blue Bloods’ (CBS) “I’m done with @BlueBloods_CBS if they are pairing Danny with that woman,” one viewer tweeted on Friday night. “He and Baez deserve to be together @DonnieWahlberg.” (Wahlberg, for his part, replied to that tweet with a crying-laughing emoji.

Exclusive: Jessica Pimentel (Orange Is the New Black) is set as a lead opposite Aubrey Plaza, Ramón Rodríguez and Wanda De Jesús in Olga Dies Dreaming, Hulu’s one-hour drama pilot based on the novel by Xochitl Gonzalez.
The pilot for Olga Dies Dreaming, written by Gonzalez and to be directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, tells the story of a Nuyorican brother (Rodríguez) and sister (Plaza) from a gentrifying Sunset Park in Brooklyn who are reckoning with their absent, politically radical mother (De Jesús) and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
Pimentel will play Mabel Ortiz, who is as street smart as she is book smart. She loves a good time; the first on a dance floor and the last off. She has opinions and isn’t afraid to express them, and she refuses to take the time to wrap them in a nice bow.

Say it ain't so! The end of Orange Is the New Black is almost here, and on Thursday, the cast came together to celebrate the show's seventh and final season at the NYC world premiere. The group - which included Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Uzo Aduba, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox, Yael Stone, Selenis Leyva, Jason Biggs, Jackie Cruz, Jessica Pimentel, and Diane Guerrero - served their best looks as they hit the red carpet, and we almost shed a tear at the mere thought that this might be the last time we see the cast all together.
Ahead of the premiere, Danielle (who is currently expecting her first child) shared a photo of her red carpet evolution on Instagram, reflecting on her first-ever Oitnb premiere. The inmates of Litchfield Prison could only dream about the kind of mass exit experienced by the cast of Orange is the New Black yesterday, though they no doubt would not feel the same sadness.
“Oitnb series wrap!,” wrote Taylor Schilling on her Instagram page, one of many cast members posting their public goodbyes on social media as the seventh and final season of the Netflix prison comedy-drama wrapped yesterday. “Whoa. My heart is full and achey and so overflowing with gratitude I’m a little dizzy.”
“This is a family,” wrote creator and executive producer Jenji Kohan as the caption of a photo of cast and crew posing on the prison set. (See it and all social media messages below).
The social media farewells actually began in the days building up to yesterday’s wrap, with some cast members marking their own final days of filming over the past week or so.

“The kids need a future,” a city council member tells Dorothea (Tyne Daly) half way through the first of Patrick Wang’s two-part A Bread Factory: “they need to learn about the world.” Forty years prior to the exchange, Dorothea and her partner Greta (Elizabeth Henry-Macari) bought a bakery in the fictional upstate New York town of Checkford, and turned it into the Bread Factory, an arts center the married couple has fought hard to keep afloat through the years. Cash and funds have historically been finite and resources volatile—but while stage director Dorothea and actress Greta powered through the decades with indomitable determination and grit, the creation of a bigger arts institute in the opposite side of town, led by a couple of world-renowned Chinese performance artists, May Ray (Janet Hsieh and George Young), is poised to spell the end of the Factory’s illustrious work. When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

It's just after 6 p.m. on a Friday, and Duff's – a noisy heavy-metal bar adorned with autographed memorabilia and jagged-looking instruments in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – has just opened its doors to the sober, work-weary masses. In the center of the room, a woman clad in a black dress and high heels is headbanging atop a carpet adorned with Iron Maiden's corpse-mascot Eddie. The music is "Bleed," an angular, machine-gun–like aural assault that's little over seven minutes long, by Swedish extreme-metal growlers Meshuggah. Bargoers sip their beer in the back,...

What an outrageously abundant year it's been for great TV — and we're only halfway through. 2016 has been a small-screen gold rush so far, from low-key comedies to mega-glitz miniseries, the Battle of the Bastards to the City of the Broads, hilarious fake news to horrifying true history — with dragons and spies and crooks and drunks. When two of the year's best shows are totally different takes on the same 1994 murder trial, you know all bets are off.
So here's a salute to the 10 best TV shows of 2016 so far:

Hours before the fourth season was set to drop on Netflix, the Orange Is the New Black cast was in high spirits for its New York City premiere, which doubled as a reunion since their shoot six months ago. "I literally keep jumping all over the carpet because I want to hug my friends!" Jackie Cruz told The Hollywood Reporter outside the Sva Theatre in Chelsea on Thursday night. Jessica Pimentel echoed before the bash at the Top of the Standard, "Some of us don't even get to work with each other on set, and when we do, it's four

Men plan, God laughs, then Netflix releases 13 episodes of a show all at once. My intention was to watch between four and six episodes of the new season of Orange Is the New Black, write an advance piece on where the show stands as it enters its fourth season, then watch the rest after it debuts tomorrow (technically, tonight at midnight Pacific) and do a spoiler-filled piece after I had seen the whole thing(*). (*) The last couple of summers, I tried — as an experiment to marry my usual episode-by-episode approach with the Netflix binge model — to review two episodes a week, but it ultimately proved unsatisfying. By the time I was writing about the season's midpoint, most of the readers had long since finished the whole thing and forgotten the granular details. So this time out, I'm going to do what I've done for several binge/streaming series lately, and...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

Early in the new season of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," a prisoner gets fed up with her counselor making assumptions about her. "You don't know my story!" she bellows at him. We know it, though, thanks to this remarkable and generous show. "Orange," whose third season premieres Friday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, has been all about taking its characters — who are marginalized as inmates at a federal women's prison, and are part of a medium that's often marginalized or simplified its depictions of women and/or minorities — figuring out what their stories are, and telling them in as vibrant and human a fashion as possible. Two years ago, the series started out by showing us the world of the Litchfield prison through the eyes of spoiled urbanite Piper (Taylor Schilling). This was on the one hand a safe move by Jenji Kohan, since Piper's background made her...
