Steve Coogan’s ‘Dr. Strangelove’ Trailer Pays Homage to Stanley Kubrick Original (Exclusive)
Image
The U.K.’s National Theatre Live has unveiled the first trailer for its cinematic presentation of “Dr. Strangelove,” the stage adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s cold war satire, ahead of its worldwide cinema release.

The footage showcases seven-time BAFTA winner Steve Coogan’s celebrated performances as Dr. Strangelove, President Merkin Muffley, Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, and Major Tj Kong in this theatrical reimagining, adapted by Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and directed by Olivier Award-winner Sean Foley. Following a stellar London run at the Noël Coward Theatre, where the Nt Live capture was filmed, the production is currently playing at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.

“Kubrick’s masterpiece has such a bold, kinetic visual style, and its original trailer captures that perfectly,” National Theatre Live senior producer Ollie Gardner and trailer editor Robin Finetto told Variety. “We set out to create a trailer that paid homage to both, while...

Steve Coogan at an event for Tropic Thunder (2008)
Dr Strangelove | West End adaptation to be screened in cinemas via National Theatre Live
Steve Coogan at an event for Tropic Thunder (2008)
Steve Coogan stars in Armando Iannucci’s West End adaptation of Dr Strangelove, which will be broadcast in cinemas next year.

“You can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!” is one of the most iconic quotes from Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 masterpiece Dr Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying About The Bomb. Starring Peter Sellers in multiple roles, it told the story of a rogue US general who triggers a nuclear crisis.

Kubrick directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Terry Southern and Peter George.

Satirist Armando Iannucci, who himself co-wrote and directed a film about useless politicians inadvertently triggering a war, the wonderful In The Loop, itself a spin-off from acerbic sitcom The Thick Of It, has adapted the film for the stage with Sean Foley, who also directed the show.

Steve Coogan takes on the daunting task of following in Sellers’ footsteps,...

Bend It Like Beckham musical review: She shoots, she scores!
Gurinder Chadha
The task of transforming a popular movie into a stage musical is a tough challenge that has brought successes (Billy Elliot), and disappointments (Made in Dagenham), so Gurinder Chadha's idea of bringing her 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham to the West End was an intriguing one.

The majority of the feel and the plot of the original film remains in the musical. Set in suburban west London, it focuses on Jess, who worships David Beckham and has a desire to play football that doesn't fit in with her Punjabi Indian parents' plans.

She secretly plays for her local women's football team and soon falls in love with coach Joe, which creates a difficult love triangle with her best friend Jules, a role which helped transform Keira Knightley into an international star.

The film's musical leaning lends itself well for a musical adaptation, and composer Howard Goodall and lyricist Charles Hart...
